  1. HI! I'm trying to teach my kids German (I'm a native speaker), but I'm having a hard time sticking to it, without some kind of program to follow... (I've lived in the US 17 years and have nobody here to speak it with, so I automatically speak English to them...) I've looked at different programs but it seems that it's either for Toddlers or Teens/Adults. I haven't been able to find anything that would appeal to them. Anybody have any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate any ideas! Thanks! P.S. We'll be going to Germany next year to visit my Mom and I would like for them to be able to communicate somewhat with others while we're there. Thanks.
  2. Hi! I'm looking for a good program to teach my kids German, before we go visit my Mom next year. So far I've only found programs for little kids that are too baby-ish for my kids, or ones geared towards Teens/Adults... I can help them with pronunciation, etc, but I'm having a hard time teaching them without some kind of program to follow. They both have Kindle's (Fire), so an app would also be an option. I would appreciate any ideas!! We've tried Muzzy before, but I'm not too fond of it. Thanks so much!!
  3. Hello! I'm considering getting the Rosetta Stone Homeschool Edition Level 1-3 for German from the Homeschool co-op, but I'm wondering if anybody has used it with kids ages 10 & 7? Will it be interesting for them or is it geared more towrds older kids/adults? I don't want to spend that kind of money if it would be boring for kids to use, but I haven't really found anything good that's made for kids in that age group... Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  4. HI, I just heard about "Word Build" by Dynamic Literacy and it seems like a great Vocabulary program, but it seems very expensive if you get the teacher edition... Has anyody used it and can give me some info on it? Is it worth it? Do you really need the Teacher Edition or is the study book sufficient? I want to start a Vocabulary program with my 9yo, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  5. Hello! I recently read in a HS Mag about people that use Khan Academy for their Math curricullum and was wondering how well that works? Do any of you use it as the sole curricullum for Math? My dd (9) is using Teaching Textbooks 4 and it's working out well, but it's not cheap... and if it's possible to use a free program like Khan and do all that's needed that would be fabulous! I had just never heard of it used as more than just a supplement and wanted to get some advice from others... Thanks!
  6. Thanks for all your suggestions! I will definitely try them out! Thanks again!
  7. Hello!! I need some advice! My dd (8) is using TT3 for Math and we're taking a break so she can learn her multiplication facts, but that's the problem. We tried flashcards - she doesn't want to do them. I had her write the facts and colored index cards (all 3s, 4s, etc. on one card) to read & memorize, but she doesn't want to do any of it, she just throws a fit and tells me she can't do it and I'm at the end of my rope. I don't know how else to get her to memorize the facts and there's no point continuing her regular lessons if she doesn't know her multiplication tables, since a lesson takes too long if she has to use long addition instead of multiply... I just don't know what to do to get those facts into her head! I'm tired of fighting every day, but she has to learn them somehow...?? Anybody have any advice?? Anything you used with your kids that they enjoyed? I know there's games where you can practice the facts, but she doesn't know them yet, so those games don't help at this point. Thanks!
  8. Hello! I recently realized that I have neglected to teach my kids (8 & 4) about music history and wanted to start incorporating it into our school days. We've talked about some classical composers & listen to classical music off and on, but I was wondering if there was a good reference book about more contemporary music (basically anything from 1900-2000 maybe?)? It seems a lot easier to find that for art, but I just want to find a book I can use as a guide to talk about different musicians and how they influenced performers that my kids like today... Does anybody have a suggestion? Thanks!
  9. Hello! I bought a used copy of AAS 2 and 3 last year and we just finished level 2... as I was looking through level 3 I noticed I didn't get a copy of the progress chart and my dd loves to put the stickers on after we finish a lesson, so I was hoping that one of you has one they could scan and email me? That would be really great! Thanks!
  10. OK, thanks for your suggestions!
  11. My dd (8) is using TT3 and she just started using multiplication. In the lecture it seems thet they talk a lot about memorizing the multiplication facts, but there isn't a file with all the facts. I asked custoer service about it and they just said they leran them gradually in the lessons. I was wondering if any of you that use it/have used it used any other sources to practice just the facts? I was a little too lax on the addition and subtraction facts and she's not good at them yet, so I don't want that to happen with multiplication facts, too... Any suggestions? How did you use it? Did you use anything extra? Or where the lessons enough in the end? Thanks!
  12. HI! My dd (8) is using TT3 and she just started learning about multiplication. In the lecture it seems that they talk about memorizing the multiplication facts, but it doesn't seem like there's a file for all the facts... I asked customer service and they said that they just learn them over time, but I was wondering if any of you had your kids practice multiplication facts from another source? I was a little lax on addition and subtraction facts, since we didn't really like flashcards, but now I wish I would have drilled her more, since she's not that good at them and I don't want the same thing to happen with multiplication... Any suggestions? How did you use it? Did you use anything extra? Or was it enought what they learned in the lessons? Thanks!
  13. Thanks! I'm actually thinking about getting him a kindle fire... not sure yet, but it seems they have many great free apps for it... ?? Anybody have one for their kids??
  14. Hello! My ds (4.5) is really into electronics and likes to play games on the pc, etc... He got $100 from family overseas for Christmas and I'm thinking about getting him some kind of electronic toy that has games as well as educational stuff on it and need some suggestions...I want something that will last him & that he can use as he grows, but at the same time I don't want to have to spend $20+ per game to add new games to it... Does anybody have any suggestions?? Thanks!
  15. HI! I was wondering if anybody is using the Total Reader program? Is it worth it? I'm just wondering if it's worth spending money on it? I'm just trying to keep up with my dd's (almost 8) reading level and making sure she is progressing... Thanks!
  16. I just borrowed Grammar Island from a friend and was under the impression that they are used in sequence? So I'm supposed to do Grammar island and practice island together? And when do I start using Sentence Island?
  17. Hello! we're having a hard time with Grammar - mainly getting the parts of speech to stick and my dd (almost 8) being able to identify them in a sentence.... We started with FLL in 1st grade (she's doing 3rd grade now), which was ok, but 2nd grade didn't go well at all and I feel it was a big waste of time. This year we read through "Grammar Land", which was fun and different, but I don't think she really followed it that well and we started using MCT "Grammar Island", but I feel like she needs more practice and I don't know what to do... Does anybody know of any (free) online grammar games or work sheets or something? I don't want to continue until she gets it all well, but going over the same thing over and over is boring.... I'm just not sure what to do! Thanks !
  18. The Homeschool Buyers Co-op has "Tell Me More" on sale again and I was wondering if it's too hard for a 7 1/2 yo? The other threads discussing this program are mostly about older kids and I was wondering if it's too hard for a 2-3 grader ? My dd started learning German (since that's where I'm originally from) and I haven't really found a great program to use... I've been here for 14 years, so just speaking German to my kids doesn't really come naturally at this point, which is why I wanted to use some kind of program along with reading books & watching movies & TV shows in German.... Thanks in advance for your input!
