  1. I don't seem to be able to copy and paste a word document of books for sale from my computer onto the for sale board...I mean, I can copy it, but when I try to paste it by right clicking with my mouse, there is no option for pasting...what might the problem be? thanks, Kirsten
  2. I keep seeing commercials on TV for Lumosity, the website with various games that are suppose to improve your brain. Just wondering if anyone has used, or is using, the website for themselves or their kids and if they feel it has helped in any way. Thanks! Kirsten
  3. Thank you all for the suggestions! I will do a search on the Sansa Fuze and will see what kind of deal I can find on a used iPod...I very much appreciate you ladies taking the time to help me out! :-) ~Kirsten
  4. I am looking for suggestions on what to buy to download and listen to audio books in the car, etc. I am so techno illiterate...I know nothing about all the mp3 players or other devices that people use for things. I don't own a fancy phone, just one of those old trac phones. I think something that would make it easy to access chapters and start and stop without loosing my place...any suggestions? Thanks so much! Kirsten (the techno dinosaur)
  5. Has anyone taken the Creative Writing class that can give a critique? Thanks! Kirsten
  6. Thank you for the responses! You all answered my questions. :001_smile: Kirsten
  7. I want to have my son take the online Geometry with Derek Owens, but can't seem to find on the website how many lectures there are. Is there a lecture for each lesson in each chapter, or one per chapter? Would my son be watching a lecture each day before he does his assigned work? Thanks for the help!! Kirsten
  8. Wow, thanks, Negin! I do have the bulgy, varicose veins along with the spider veins. I have a bad one down my thigh and some bulgy ones on my calf and behind my knee. Ugh! I just hate them. I got them when I was pregnant with my second child, and they are getting worse I think as I get older (I'll be 50 in less than 2 weeks). I do follow all of the tips that you put at the end; my weight is good, I do strength training and put 2-4 miles on my treadmill 6 days a week, don't cross my legs (it is uncomfortable for me to do with my left leg anyway), have been trying to wear support stockings, and if I need to be in one spot for long I try to sit and elevate my feet for a while. I was unaware of the other suggestions regarding the foods to eat. I do eat a food amount of fiber and blueberries, I cook with a fair amount of onions and garlic, and use little to no salt (and don't eat salty snacks). I have been taking extra vitamin E, but now that I look at the label, it says dl-Alpha, so I guess I need to look for a good brand that is d-Alpha instead. I didn't even know there was a difference! I looked at some horse chestnut and some of the brands contain butcher's broom and the gotu kola...do you think it is better to take it all separately, or do you know of a brand that combines them all in the appropriate amounts? I have been to a vein doctor, but my insurance doesn't want to cover the treatment that he wants to do, so I would like to see if I can at least stop my leg from getting any worse. Some improvement would be awesome if that is possible! I have also seen that there are topical applications...do you think the oral suppplements are the best way to go? Thanks for all your help! Kirsten
  9. I have bad veins in my left leg, and have had some stripping done many years ago but continue to have problems. I have read that horse chestnut can help...has anyone actually used this for veins, and has it helped? Side effects? Some days it seems that the compression stockings just make my leg feel worse... ~Kirsten
  10. This topic has really been on my mind lately! With my oldest in college, I am starting to feel like the years are going by so quickly and before I know it, my youngerst (freshman) will be graduating and going off, and I will be obsolete. I am already feeling obsolete some of the time, as my two youngest are becoming more and more independent, and seem to like it that way. I still do some things with my youngest, but most of the time he just wants to work on his own. I have a few years yet before I need something else to do besides home school, but I have definitely been thinking about it. I look forward to what others have to say about their "after homeschooling" plans. I need ideas...
  11. I am using the Dive Biology with my son this year and we are using the 3rd edition. The syllabus I downloaded is for the 3rd edition, but there may be one for the 4th it that is what you want to use. ~Kirsten
  12. Ester Maria, I always read your posts with great interest. I am curious where you grew up and went to school (if that is not too nosy of me :001_smile:)I went to a rural high school in eastern Texas...not very rigourous to be sure. ~Kirsten
  13. Thanks to all who took the time to respond to my post. It is always interesting to see the various perspectives on these things. I guess I am thinking that colleges sort of expect the "serious" students to take AP's, and that if a kid graduates with none, then, well, he/she must not be a high achiever. My only experience is with the one my oldest son did at home, but I would assume that an AP course taken online or at ps would be beneficial just for the rigour that it provides? Good practice for college rigour? I don't know; it just seems so ordinary to take just "regular" high school courses. Nothing stands out with that anymore... My own thoughts are that since there is a university in my town, the best way to get your feet wet, so to speak, is to take a class or two in the senior year and see how it goes. It worked well for my oldest, but each of my boys is so different...my middle son has no clue what he wants to do, so he will probably be going to our local university anyway and living at home to save money. He's taken one ACT and scored a 26, not stellar but not bad either. He wants to take it at least once more, but would need to get at least a 30 to get really good money. My youngest wants to go to Universtiy of Oklahoma for meterology, so I am thinking he needs some AP's or something to help his transcript look reasonably competitive. But, the academic enthusiasm is just not there, at least not yet. However, according to several of the responses, AP's were expected, and the kids survived... So much to ponder, so little time! :001_smile: ~Kirsten
  14. I just looked up Practice Makes Perfect Spanish and there are so many of them! Which ones are must haves? Does it just depend on what the student is struggling with?
  15. My oldest did his one AP as a junior, but because we too live in a university town (Universtiy of Central Missouri) he took 4 classes there his senior year -Calc I and II, Statistics, and Economics. That seemed more practical than any more APs, and because UCM is a four year universtiy, Auburn gave him credit for all them without any fuss. Maybe that is the better route for my other two as well? It makes me feel better that other homeschool kids are not "begging" to do APs!! __________________
  16. Just wondering if all of moms with kids taking AP classes/courses, either at public school or online, are REQUIRING them or are they the student's choice? My boys seem to show no initiative to take AP courses, so I guess I am trying to decide whether I should make them or not. My oldest only took one AP test, and that was because he was already doing the Sonlight British lit course (which is not an official AP course) which claims to prepare you for the AP, so I made him take the test. He scored a 4, so we were happy. Just talked to my neice (senior) over the holidays, and she took one AP her freshman year, two her junior year, and is taking four this year (her choice). How can I stir up interest in my boys to try an AP class? Or, should I just make them? Kirsten
  17. My oldest son's score went up 23 points. My middle son took the PSAT this year as a junior, but did not take it last year, so nothing to report there. Oldest made National Merit, middle son will not, based on his score. Kirsten
  18. Thank you so much for the quick replies!! I will pass these links on to him. You ladies are such a blessing!! Beaners: The text is by Hass, Weir, and Thomas. Kirsten
  19. My freshman ds is taking calc 3 and preparing for a test on Monday. Unfortunatley, some of the material is going to come from topics that haven't been taught yet...my ds has looked at some topics on Khan academy, but I'm wondering if there is some other online help he could go to. The text he is using is University Calculus (Pearson) . I sure wish the test wasn't Monday! Thanks! Kirsten
  20. I have the second edition, and it is full of sticky notes marking important pages, folded-over page corners (yikes!) and many pencil notes. Michelle in MO (we used to live near one another) told me about it years ago and I read the copy she had donated to the library, and afterwards bought my own. I didn't know about these boards until after I read the book. Love it! Kirsten
  21. I wish I had known about this! I will definitely use this next year for my youngest. Thanks! Kirsten
  22. I don't have a recommendation either, but thought this same thing last year when my son was doing Apologia Chemistry. Next year the last one will be doing chemistry, so I hope someone has some good suggestions! I am wishing that Apologia will put out a "supplemental, extra problems, workbook" or something that will go right along with the text. About 10 of each type of problem would probably do...:001_smile: Just remembered, I did see a book at the bookstore that was called the Humongous Book of Calculus Problems...I wonder if there is one for chemistry? I'm going now to Amazon to look it up... Kirsten
