    We are doing 2 chapters a week and adding in about 25 or so Mystery of History chapters (ones I think are important and that do not overlap SOTW--creation, ice age, noah and the flood, adam and eve, abraham, moses, Jesus' ministry, death and resurrection and a few others in the old testament--just enough to bring God into our history study but not so it's so overwhelming. LOVING it so far!

    The benefits others have posted above are spot on. It has been an unbelievable group for my family to be a part of. The accountability is wonderful. The kids are in a classroom environment one day a week and to be honest, I appreciate being able to tell them and others we do a bit of "school" like a traditional schooled naysayer would be familiar with. Our particular CC group coordinates TONS of field trips, yearbooks, contests, award ceremonies, parties, etc. This is all in addition to the awesome memory curriculum. I was one that at the beginning of the year thought I could save money and do it on my own but at the last minute we decided to try it out. My kindergartener became memory master this year and I can honestly say I never would have gotten around to the memory work on my own--and when your young child is naming every European country and spitting out multiplication facts and telling you the laws of thermodynamics--it's pretty cool :) Just my 2 cents :)

    I would say buy them if you can afford them. My kindergartener became memory master this year and I think the photos from the timeline cards are wonderful BUT they're probably not 100% necessary if you cannot afford them. CC is awesome though and I recommend it without a doubt!

    Both of my kids are ahead in grade level. For kindergarten we used: Singapore Math kindergarten and 1st grade (did both years in kindergarten but didn't skip easy pages--that way they would continue to increase their confidence in their math abilities) Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (get through the first 20 lessons and then after that you will LOVE it--gets the child to a 2nd grade level) then move on to Hooked on Phonics Master Reader program Classical Conversations (my son became a Memory Master in kindergarten--cannot recommend CC enough!) Writing from Teach Your Child to Read TONS of field trips 1st grade we've added more subjects

    I have LOVED Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons!! It is absolutely fantastic. I've used it with my son and daughter. It's so quick and such an easy transition into reading. The first 20 lessons are sort of obnoxious because as the parent you're getting used to the teacher and reading word for word but then the child and mom gets into a groove and it's quick and painless. For both of my children I got up to somewhere between lesson 40 and 60 and then decided to back up about 20 lessons and review and it clicked! Suddenly the confidence was there and they were reading. After they got through 100 Easy Lessons they were at a "2nd grade level" and we moved on to Hooked on Phonics Master Reader program and that too has been amazing!!

    We've used apologia exploring creation through zoology 1 and LOVE it. It is definitely geared for a 2nd grader so it may be a perfect fit! It has a lot of hands on activities. If you're trying to save money you can buy the textbook (shop around because you can find it cheaper than apologia's website) and then just print the notebook pages as you use them at home.
