  1. I had dd13 start today and she did 2-3 lessons per subject and got through all 4 subjects in 87 minutes. Please tell me the lessons will start lasting longer!? In the demo lessons they went on quite a bit longer and I could see where 1-2 lessons a day per subject would be fine. I sat with her to make sure she was paying attention and actually doing the lessons. She's technically finishing up 7th grade but looking at the S&S this lines up a lot with with K12.com does for 7th only more visual which is what I was going for. She flew through the lessons today, please tell me I'm not going to need to mandate X amount of time per lesson no matter how many she goes though in that time.
  2. It wouldn't really raise any flags for me, I was 16 when I met my first love, he was 23. We dated for over a year, literally spent at least 8 hours a day together every day except Sundays, most of it was alone time. Poor guy was frustrated the entire year but he didn't pressure me to have TeA or anything I wasn't ready for. He still lived at home but his parents were not Americans and it was normal for him to still be at home and he worked part time with the family business and didn't go to school. My parents worried and made a point to get to know him, he even had jam sessions with my dad since they both played guitar. To make matters worse for my parents he was a total hippie, long hair, didn't wear shoes, often looked like he just walked out of a Grateful Dead concert. Totally not someone my parents wanted dating their daughter. Pretty sure I was 18 by the time we did anything. Our romantic relationship didn't last but he's still my best friend 20 years later, I wish I could find someone like him again only with more interests shared, we have amazing communication between us, no lies and we can read each other like a book. Its set the standard for what I look for in a relationship and I haven't found it in anyone else. I have to laugh, he's in his 40's now, still works for his parents and still looks like he just left a dead concert lol:) Point is, not all guys are creeps and I would not worry about it if your daughter doesn't have any developmental delays. Get to know the guy and get a feel for him.
  3. We tried PS and its been a disaster every time:( We haven't had luck getting accommodations and she's got virtually no executive functioning skills which is a recipe for failure. I know here its hopeless, I'm told we might get better luck in the city. I'm just worried about putting a naive kid with the social skills of a 2 year old who is desperate for friends and will do anything to get them in with 8th graders. Jr high girls are generally blood thirsty iykwim.
  4. dd13 is smart but has no interest in getting an education, if its not what she's interested in its not worth her time. I am sick of the constant fighting and snotty attitude over school work. I'm hoping she will react better to Time4Learning High School since its really visual but so far today she's been a pill about it. Any suggestions beyond take away her toys until school work is done? She makes everyone miserable when she's not getting her way but she's got to do her school work. We run an inverted school year with winters off and summers on so this is not vacation time for us.
  5. Thank you everyone, I will give it it a try for dd13 and see what happens. I had her start the Physical Science class today and we didn't even get through the lab safety intro before she was complaining "I know this!" in a snotty way. She wants nothing to do with school at all and of course thinks she knows everything. We shall see. How do you survive getting ASD kids with attitudes to do their work without making your life miserable?
  6. Hope this quotes right, on my cell. Yes its low income housing and it was in the middle of the day. It was a regular city cop who is there on a regular basis. I know he was there 3x our first or 2nd day trying to pick up our neighbor for drugs after they raided her house and she wasnt there but her guests had drugs on them and they were found in the house. I hope shes evicted soon, last night she had a drunk guest who stayed less then 5 min who broke a glass beer bottle when it rolled out of the truck she was riding in. Didnt even bother to clean it up. Found out were #3 on the list now in the city we want/need. The complex is run by a religious homeschooling family who lives onsite and we have a lot in common. Im hoping drugs are not such an issue there.
  7. Low D causes Hyperparathroidism which causes low calcuim which triggers heart arrhythmia. Btdt so many times I've lost count over the years. It's usually low calcium, magnesium or potassium for me but if I have missed D for a couple days it's usually low calcium triggering prolonged QT waves hence the chest pain. Scary but easy to deal with, oral calcium citrate (I think, would have to check the bottle) and D3. You will be ok, just make sure to start D3 asap:)
  8. Agreed! D2 is worthless and won't really raise your levels. You need D3 which is easily and cheaply bought otc. I almost had osteoporosis from low D (T score was -2.0) and Dr ordered that Ergo junk which I spent a fortune oop since it wasnt covered and my levels didn't really go up at all. I have trouble with D though, I take 5000iu of D3 daily and my level is still only 44. You want around 80 for best health. 2000iu is bare minimum for a healthy non deficient person, your Dr is not up to date on this, sadly most drs don't have a clue about healthy vitamin levels.
  9. Boppy Mei Tai Ergo Chinese Prefolds (awesome for darn near everything) Bouncy seat (very handy to have a 2nd mesh one for the shower since I co bathe) Bed rail Breast pump Cup feeder Clothes Car seat Flannel blankets Waste of money ime: Crib Pack in play (made a great toy box though) Swing Most baby toys Changing table Both of mine were summer babies so needed little in the way of clothes/blankets in the newborn period.
  10. It appears its not in this town we just moved to. My dd8 wasn't even playing in the street but another child told the officer she was so I got to met the neighborhood police officer. Wondering if CPS will be showing up next, when did kids playing outside become a crime? School is out for summer and she was doing a puzzle with another child on the sidewalk yet the cop took the kids word that my dd was in the street (the boy did get busted for being in the street) because the cop knows the mom and kid and I'm new to the complex and an unknown. Doesn't help matters this place is full of drugs and crime it appears, it looks pretty darn quiet in my building but just living here makes you a bad parent I guess.
  11. Keep saving but plan to replace the car soon possibly, have you tried a different mechanic? I had a touchy starting car and it was due to the security system. Something about the gel the signal had to transmit through from the key to the car. The gel would harden when it got cold outside and the car would think it was being stolen and refuse to start since it got the wrong signal.
  12. Time 4 Learning http://www.time4learning.com/homeschool/high_school.html
  13. I've looked at it and the samples and the 9th grade stuff just looks like about 7th grade.
  14. I didn't do the baby shower thing but I did have a welcoming/met the baby party for my oldest 14 years ago. Made sense to me back then, more so then the baby shower which I did not want.
  15. Not IME, higher prices usually just mean less prep work for me.
  16. Yep, they took out 3, 100+ year old cottonwoods from our front yard at our old place and while the trees were still alive they were rotted out inside and the guy nearly fell at one point when he realized it was hollowed out inside. They had no idea of this when they started: The whole thing was a disaster for the poor guy, he charged $2500 to take out the 3 trees and the job ended up costing him more then what he was paid although $1k of the job was his fault because they took out the house power line with the very last limb which really sucked because as you can see we had snow on the ground, temps were near zero and we lived in an uninsulated house with electric heat, it was after hours and a weekend or holiday to boot if I remember so he really got nailed from the electric guy on coming out at like 7pm. Anyway, I agree with the other posters, you may want to back out if the seller doesn't. He should have known about and disclosed the dead trees up front. What else is he hiding? I really really really wanted a house last year until I learned from the locals the problems with the house that was not disclosed by the seller so believe me I understand wanting it but some houses are not worth it.
  17. I know my limits and know we do best when we use an online school where everything is laid out for me and dd is accountable to someone else in the end. K12 just isn't the best fit for us anymore, we loved how visual/animated Connections Academy was just the content is way below grade level IMO and it had tons of busy work which we hated. What other national school programs should I check into? I would be thrilled if we had the content level of K12 and the visuals of Connections, any thoughts on this magical school? The only thing I can think of is just using T4L high school courses for 7-8th grade. I've looked at it and seen the sample and their 9th grade level classes look to be 7th to me.
  18. My dd13 used to run fevers with allergies and I've heard from others it happens with as well. That said this is backed up by lab work for my dd. At the time she had a PID dx and never ran fevers with actual infections.
  19. Thank you, that is a fair assessment. For those that don't know I'm a single mom who hasn't been able to work since Dec which meant we quickly burned though my tax return which normally fills in gaps through the year for the most part, instead it was gone in weeks. In the past 6 months my car needed an expensive to me repair, my oldest was dx'd with Autism after years of asking psych dr's if thats what was going in, I've had to deal with severe mental health issues (they think she may have schizophrenia) with her which required I stay home with her on both run away and suicide watch for months and with very little sleep. We have lots of therapy appts between both kids, its been one thing after another until we ended up homeless earlier this month after I couldn't pay the rent because I had to pay the electric shut off notice which would have meant no heat when temps were still freezing. Its not a matter of poor spending habits, it was a matter of lack of money because I wasn't working and dd's SSI wasn't enough to keep us afloat with even the basics and thats all we were paying for, absolute NEEDS. Thankfully we got rehoused last week in income based housing (rent we can actually afford!) so were no longer homeless but I have had a very stressful year with everything going on and checking her backpack when she got off the bus at 5:30pm was not something I even remembered to do because homework was done at the after school program and she would hand me notices. We have another rough month or 2 fincinally then things will even out and we can put this behind us but right now were counting pennies, especially since they immediately cut our SNAP by $100 when we got housed here and the amount was already not enough when your gluten/dairy/grain free (celiac/allergies). SN families fall though the safety net cracks when SHTF and we got caught up in it, were digging our way out but even though the fee is not that big at all, right now its a lot to us.
  20. No idea but I don't understand a lot of the weird stuff they do in this state either.
  21. Its pretty easy to prove, they don't have a signed permission slip:)
  22. The books are returned, its late fees as far as I know. Squaring up means we skip meals, I wasn't joking about counting pennies. I didn't even know she was getting books until recently when she told me the librarian told her I would need to pay late fees. I had to remind them back in Dec when I realized she had a library book in her backpack that she wasn't allowed to get books. I guess it fell on deaf ears.
  23. dd7 (8 tomorrow:) is forever forgetting to return books. At the beginning of the year they sent home permission slips for students to use the school library and the local library which comes to the school weekly on a bus. I flat out refused and explained to the teacher that no I will not sign because dd is not responsible and I have paid tons of fees over the years and I don't allow my kids to check out any books unless I am right there and I keep the books in my possession and the kids can check them out from me while they read them and hand them back when they put the book down. They let her check books out of the school library anyway :cursing: She keeps them in her back pack which goes to school with her every day but every freaking week forgets to turn the books in on library day. I've told her to just give them to her teacher and stop getting books (her teacher makes her check something out). She brought home a bill yesterday, its not for a lot but its more then we got right now when every penny counts. At the beginning of the year I told the school she is not to check out books and I would not be responsible for fees and they required her to check them out anyway (just regular reading, not in any way used in the classroom so not a true need IMO, I would have sent reading books from home if she needed something for a reading time period) Would you pay the fees? I'm going to call the school on Monday and speak with the librarian and remind them I told them dd was not allowed to use the library because of excessive fees in the past. This is her last year at this school since we have moved out of the district and I'm having to drive her the half hour to school every day and pick her up, school is almost out and I wanted her to finish out the year since it was way to late to transfer. She will likely attend the new local PS next year and I'm guessing they would include the bill in her file.
