  1. How incredibly sad. I'll keep Samantha's family in my prayers.
  2. Western Oregon, which is where we live now. (This time of year I dream of having a vacation home in a sunny location though!)
  3. I bought an "ear piercing kit" online and did my daughter's ears myself. I was a little nervous, but it turned out fine. Dd was 12 at the time. Editing to add: I acted as guinea pig first -- I had my dh pierce my ears the same way a year or so before I pierced my dd's.
  4. I second all of the above. A few more suggestions: The California Academy of Sciences which is right across from the de Young Museum (fine arts) which is next to the Japanese Tea Garden. You could do all this in one (long) day if you like. Take a cable car ride, maybe to Ghirardelli Square, where you can have ice cream at the Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Manufactory (I recommend a banana split -- yum!) and then head over to Fisherman's Wharf. And if you are sports fans, you could take in a Giants game at AT&T Park (Go Giants!).
  5. You can also upload the .pdf from your PC to Google docs, then go to Google docs on your iPad and download the doc from there.
  6. Yes! I use PDF Expert (app) so I can make notes. You can view PDFs in iBooks too.
  7. One of my boys stuck a bead up his nose once. We took him to urgent care and no one there could get it out so we had to bring him to an ENT. It cost a LOT to get that thing out!
  8. I love my iPad, but I don't like typing on it. If I am going to type anything more than a few sentences, I use my laptop or desktop PC. You can get a keyboard for the iPad, but in your position, I think I'd go with the MacBook Air.
  9. Here you go: http://www.worldbook.com/typical-course-of-study edited to add: oops sorry I see you found it!
  10. Here's a link to a co-housing community in Oregon: http://www.cohoecovillage.org/index.shtml I don't know anything about it, just remember coming across it in a newspaper article.
