  1. I am in the same boat with Algebra. Robby sort of skipped algebra this year and did lots of random maths including some Jacobs Mathematics a Human Endeavor. We did some of AoPS Pre-A, Alcumus, Zaccaro Real World Algebra then around the election he began Stats on Khan Academy out of his own interest. I think I might have him do the second half or 2/3s of Jacobs along with AoPS or Foresters word problems. I don’t know if that would be enough to consider it “honors.” Is that even something to consider for middle school math credits on a future HS transcript? Is there a test middle schoolers can take at the end of the year to prove their knowledge like CLEP?

I'm a math tutor. In my experience, ALL students need fraction revision through 8th grade, and MOST need fraction revision through 10th grade.  In fact, sometimes we do a bit of revision while concurrently working on calculus in 12th grade.  So have him learn it, learn it again, and learn it about 5 more times.  Each year it will go faster and be easier.  Fractions are not one of those things that most kids just master, remember forever, and move on.

Any particular thing you use to test their knowledge or offer the student for these reviews?

How good is your understanding of fractions and your ability to communicate that understanding?

If you comprehend fractions well yourself and you can teach fractions, then buy nothing else. There isn't anything magical about Math Mammoth (which we did every grade level of and many of the upper level supplements as well), or Key to Fractions (we also used all 4-books in that series).

If you understand the topic and can convey your understanding of that topic then the only difference between math books is the formatting or layout of the text itself. Because the books are going to boil down to being just a collection of graduated exercises that students complete to gain fluency at various thought-processes, manipulations, calculations, relationships, etc.

I second this. When we come a topic my son doesn't understand and I am unable to teach it and we cannot or don't want to wait for ”Professor Daddy” to explain it we’ve been able to find (usually) a multitude of videos on YouTube that explain the topic. When he was little we went down the math picture book rabbit hole. Many of these titles are listed in SWB’s WTM book. Maybe you could watch some videos and then teach a few concepts? I have seen a lot of fruit from this.

  4. We are about 50 lessons into Getting Started With Latin.  My son has does well with it.  For a time I was adding all of the practice sentences/vocabulary into Anki App on my phone for him to use.  We haven't used the Anki deck as much as I'd like.  I forget about it, honestly. Our routine at the moment is my husband who took 4 years of Latin in high school teaches our ds on Monday evenings 4-5 new lessons.  Then he makes flashcards to review the grammar/vocabulary throughout the week.  Since my husband started making the flashcards to review I think our Anki has fallen out of use.  Now I am behind on adding stuff to his Anki deck.  I guess his DuoLingo practice is just for more exposure.  It only adds a few minutes to his day.  My husband is frustrated it is in Classical vs. Ecclesiastical pronunciation, but it's not enough of a hinderance at this point to avoid the program.  I have looked at Picta Dicta for added vocabulary practice as well, but never took the plunge to purchase it.

  5. Can someone explain to me why the income standards like that of U of Chicago says for a family with an income of 125 or University of Washington in St. Louis 75k (they say no loans will be apart of the financial package) is not based on income/family size? This makes no sense to me. A family of two (single parent plus child) with 75k vs. a family of 6 with annual income of 75k are totally different scenarios. Our student loans, taxes, and health insurance premium is a sliding scale based on income/family size.

Do you have a homeschool DI group? I would love for my kids to join this.

  8. There are quite a few remedies to stall or stop foreclosure if it comes to that. My husband used to be a bankruptcy/troubled taxpayer attorney. I heard him talk about cases of pending home loss often.

If you needed to get the money to pay the arrearage could you refinance? I know that doesn't help long term, but if it means possibly losing your house... I would be asking the county government/lender/insurance company/etc. to remove the escrow account and set up a separate savings account in the future. I used to work for a homeowners insurance company right before the recession hit and so many days I’d talk to someone who's policy was canceled due to none payment because the lender didn't pay the insurance company. Mortgages were being sold so quickly they would get mixed up. No one would notice until they were filing a claim. It's worthwhile to call your insurance company once a year to get the current declarations page and update your coverage especially for personal items as these things change frequently.
