  1. I'm a nerd. My husband is a geek. My son is a mixture of both. Not sure about the little one yet, but there's probably no hope for her :).
  2. For me, the hardest thing was realizing that I couldn't afterschool every subject. So now we just focus on math, history, and lots of reading. I'd love to be doing more, but trying was stressing the whole family out.
  3. My son was the same way. He refused to read easy readers, but could read every billboard we passed and everything he saw on TV. I think he just wasn't interested in the easy books. I bought him a big stack of comics and graphic novels geared toward kids and away he went. Now he reads pretty much anything he can get his hands on.
  4. I'm perplexed by this too. I would guess that people in New England are familiar with the concept of snowstorms in winter.
  5. I love The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Smithsonian, and Granta. BTW, if you want to sample Granta, Amazon has quite a few back issues for about 1/2 off the cover price.
  6. They also have Outlander for $3.99 and our own SWB's History of the Medieval World for $6.99.
  7. I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Lives-Queens-England-Revised-Updated/dp/0520224604/ref=pd_sim_b_1
  8. I'm watching season 1 on Prime Instant Video. So far so good!
  9. I've only done testing and Day 1, and I'm hurting! I'm going to try Day 2 tomorrow and Day 3 on Saturday. On Sunday I will take lots of ibuprofen :).
  10. I did my initial tests today for the challenges I'm going to try: Sit-ups: I did 50, so it says I should start at week 3, but I'm just going to start at Week 1, column 3. Push-ups: I did 8 modified push-ups, so I'll start at week 1, column 2. Squats: I did 20, so I'll start week 1 in column 2.
  11. I feel the same way about jury duty, phones and parking. Also trips in general and air travel in particular. I'm not afraid of the plane crashing, I just hate that the entire thing is out of my control. I travel occasionally for my job and I obsess and worry about it. I hate that other people go through this too, but at the same time I'm glad it's not just me. If that makes any sense at all :).
  12. I can't wait to watch this with my son. Thanks for the tip!
  13. The PS cutoff here is August 31, and it seems like most boys with summer birthdays are held back. A friend whose son was due on August 30 was asked several times whether she planned to redshirt-while she was pregnant! After she got over her shock, she just started telling people that she wanted to meet him before deciding :). My son has a July birthday, and I went against local custom (what can I say, I'm a rebel) and had him start K when he had just turned 5. He was the tallest kid in his K class, and was extremely verbal, though he wasn't really reading yet. He's in 1st grade now and is in the top tier of readers in his class. I think he's a little socially immature compared to some of his classmates, but many of the boys in his class were redshirted, so they are quite a bit older than him. I don't think it's such a big deal though. So far, I don't regret sending him on time.
  14. Absolutely worth it! Love the 2-day shipping and the streaming, which has many more choices than it used to.
  15. My whole family loves and adores Gravity Falls. New episode February 15!
  16. Lord Peter Wimsey fans: the Kindle Daily Deal for today is Gaudy Night for $1.99: http://www.amazon.com/Gaudy-Night-Wimsey-Mysteries-ebook/dp/B008JVJDVO/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1359460795&sr=8-6&keywords=dorothy+sayers
