  1. I consider myself Appalachian-American :).
  2. ...what kind of pants do you wear, and where do you find them? I still have a mommy belly even though I haven't had a baby in quite a while. Before I had the first kid, I wore I size 12. Before the second one, I wore a 14. Now a 14 fits my hips, but I can't zip them up. A 16 fits around my waist, but droops in the back and sides and looks so sloppy. During the summer I wear comfy and cute knit skirts, but fall is coming and at some point I'll need some pants. Help!
  3. Totally forgot about Horrible Histories!
  4. My 2nd grader loves the "You Wouldn't Want to Be..." books, Captain Underpants, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Tintin, Asterix, anything by Rick Riordan or about mythology in general, graphic novels of all sorts, and Popular Science magazine.
  5. DS was almost 5, and DD almost 3. DS is still kinda messy at 7, and DD is very deliberate and neat at just-turned-3.
  6. Loved the 1st episode of Broadchurch! And I agree that they should stop making American versions of great British shows. I submit Top Gear as an example of why that's not a good idea.
  7. WVU is my alma mater, and a wonderful place to spend your college years, IMHO :).
  8. I don't like much contemporary country music, but I do like Darius Rucker and the Pistol Annies.
  9. I used to pay all the bills back in the olden days when you had to pay everything by check. I hated it so much. One year he asked what I wanted for my birthday and I asked him to do the monthly bills. He didn't mind so now it's his job. We do almost everything automatically now but he is the one who coordinates and checks in on cash flow. I just make it and spend it :).
  10. My 3 yo loves Team Umizoomi, and when my son was that age he liked Blue's Clues. As he got a little older he was into Liberty's Kids.
  11. He also smokes a pipe and inhales ether and passes out in a later story. All of this stuff went right over my son's head, and he loved those stories.
  12. My son watches Dumb and Dumber Minecraft videos (no relation to the movie). There are about a million of them and they are pretty harmless IMHO.
  13. Go to Sutton's on Franklin Street for a banana milkshake, have lunch at Jujube, and go shopping at Southern Season at University Mall.
  14. Around here (Southern US) kids call adults Miss or Mr. First Name.
  15. I'm reading WEM and planning future reading based on the WEM/WTM book lists. I'm thinking of reading chronologically using History of the Medieval World as a spine. I'm hoping to start this summer, and figure it will take me years and years to complete. It's my own personal quest, and it's currently occupying all my spare brain capacity :).
  16. If loving books is wrong, I don't want to be right.
  17. Yes, this is the one we have, and it has the color illustrations.
  18. If you're getting Castle Diary, make sure to get the larger hardback with the full-color illustrations. The tiny cheap paperback has little black-and-white illustrations. If RR doesn't have the one with color illustrations, you can order it used or new from the UK on Amazon.
  19. We started when my son was 5. He loved SOTW1 then and now, at 6, he loves SOTW2. I read each chapter aloud, and we find the area being discussed on the globe. Once I've finished reading, he usually runs off to draw a picture or build a Lego model of whatever we were reading about. He's a huge history buff though, so YMMV.
  20. I'll have to try this. I usually eat mine raw, marinated in red wine with a little sea salt. Yum!
  21. Thanks everyone! We tried Duolingo today. So far so good. I'm doing the typing for him, but he can do the rest himself, and he loves the format.
  22. My son (almost 7 yo) wants to learn German. Can anyone recommend a good program and/or books, CDs, websites, etc.? Thanks!
  23. I second the recommendation for the Homeschool Gathering Place. They have a great used/consigned book section.
