  1. I second this! Another advantage is the coordinating accessories like glass doors, extra shelves, matching cd/dvd tower . . .
  2. What a helpful thread! I've migrated to the afterschooling board as my kiddos start Montessori school this fall after a couple years of homeschooling.
  3. If you're anywhere near an Ikea, they have some cute little tabletop night lights: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=SP%C3%96KA
  4. This is the first thing that came to my mind too. Whenever my son feels anxious or overwhelmed/overstimulated by the environment he's in, he expresses those feelings through goofiness. I've found that in group settings he's more at ease around kids a bit younger (not too young- maybe a year or less). -Faith
  5. My son is 9 and also a video game fanatic. He has been asking about stop motion animation lately, so I ordered a kit from timberdoodle. We haven't tried it yet as it just came in the mail, but I thought of it when I saw your post. http://www.timberdoodle.com/Animation_Kit_p/223-003.htm
  6. I'll join you in the "could this be perimenopause?" club :001_smile: I'm 38 and I've also noticed some changes related to my cycle. I've had the pre-period spotting, but didn't think anything of it. Then, my PMS mood swings got worse, but I chalked that up to increased stress. During the last couple months I've been hit with morning-sickness grade nausea during my period. THAT got my attention and I've been reading up on all things perimenopause.
  7. The Happy Scientist http://thehappyscientist.com/ Clever Dragons (aimed at boys, with a sister site Always Icecream for girls) http://clever-dragons.com/home Math Whizz http://www.whizz.us/ Others have mentioned a few we enjoy as well: Creativity Express, AHA! Science, and Reading Eggs.
  8. I love "None of Your Business" Academy! You could even translate it into Latin to sound more academic/official. -Faith
  9. These are a few my son loves: Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius (Marvel) collections of the "Cul de Sac" comic strip graphic novel versions of "The Boxcar Children"
  10. I use Amy Knapp's Big Grid calendar. It's 22"x15" when open and has a nice big space for each day. https://www.familyorganizer.com/product.aspx?id=121 Faith
  11. Yes, Nicholas Courtney died in February. I love that on the Sarah Jane adventures, there is a picture of the Brigadier on the wall in the attic. So sad that Elizabeth Sladen has passed away as well. -Faith
  12. Thanks for starting this thread. These links are great! I'm new to homeschooling and recently switched to Miquon with my 8-year old after crashing and burning with a worksheet-based program. My son's first reaction to the cuisinare rods was "We used these in school. Boring!" He must have used them in class last year for one or two lessons with Everyday Math. If it at all resembles the math he experienced at public school, he wants nothing to do with it (thanks, school!). We are getting to a point where we've worked enough from Miquon that he's been able to start to enjoy it. I can't believe I'm using a curriculum from the 70's, but that has to say something about it's effectiveness! -Faith
