  1. When we decided to get a family dog, we knew we'd get one from a shelter or rescue because so many dogs are given up or abandoned. That's where we've gotten each of our cats over the years, too, and have always had good luck. When we were looking or a dog we wanted one that met the following criteria: small-medium size little shedding gets along with cats (we have 2) a young dog, but not a puppy mild temperament We looked for about 2 months before we found our ideal dog at the Petsmart one Saturday when a local rescue agency had several dogs available. We though he was so cute and seemed well behaved, but we knew he was our when we found out his name was Chewbacca (Chewy). We already have/had cats named after sci-fi characters. It was meant to be. Just keep looking until you find one that makes your heart melt. :-)
  2. Last night: Roasted chicken and sauteed baby squash Tonight: onigiri and miso soup (we went to the Japanese market today just for fun!)
  3. I would not get a dog unless you are 100% on board with the idea. I resisted getting a dog for years, because I knew that I would be the one taking on most of the responsibility. I also thought they were messy and smelly, which they are but that's why there are groomers. ;-P When I was finally ready for a dog we searched until we found one that fit our family to a T. I am in LOVE with our dog, because we took our time and waited until everyone was ready. We all do help take care of him, but it's still mostly me and I'm ok with that because I love him. His personality comforted me when I was grieving the loss of my dad who was killed in a hit and run accident. After spending months traveling back and forth helping my mom and sitting through court hearings, I decided I didn't want to always be saying "no" to my daughter's request for a dog, I wanted to say YES for a change. But it takes time to search for the right dog, which doesn't necessarily mean a certain breed. We got ours from a rescue agency. He's a mixed-breed, cock-a-poo I think but it doesn't matter to us that he's not a pure-breed, he's lovable and adorable. Best wishes with whatever you decide.
  4. We call our tortoiseshell cat "the most expensive rescue kitty in the world" because of all her illnesses and conditions. She's 13 1/2 and I think she's also going blind now. She's already on thyroid meds, had a heat stroke a few years ago, a respiratory infection and a virus. I swear she has 15 lives. On a more humorous note, I seriously thought "GS" meant "grandson" until I got to the part where you said "intact male" and realized you meant German Shepherd. LOL!
  5. I think Charlotte's Web captures the heart of America. Love, sacrifice, trying hard. And it takes place on a farm.
  6. We got back home today. DD and I spent all of our free time at the Venetian, which was across the street from our hotel. We enjoyed the "authentic" decor, the food, and waiting in line for dessert from the Cake Boss's new pastry shop. We watched the opera and talent show, and fell for the sales pitch at the Pearl Factory and came home with a couple of lovely pearls mounted in pretty settings, one an early birthday present for my daughter. My husband and daughter did the Sky Jump off the Stratosphere and I heard DD laugh all the way down, she loved it so much. Finally, I had a blast with the other spouses watching my husband's band play Fri. and Sat. nights. Vegas was fun! Oh, and my husband and I had dear daughter take our picture in front of The Little Church of the West, where we got married 19 1/2 years ago. <3
  7. Tell them you are going to leave a very detailed description of your experience on YELP. Not angry, just describing what happened and how they haven't handled it to your satisfaction whatsoever. See how quickly you get a response then.
  8. I just remembered this. I am a big fan of Dale Chihuly, the glass artist. The Bellagio hotel has several displays of his work that I plan to go and see. Maybe you would like this: http://www.bellagio.com/attractions/fiori-di-como.aspx
  9. We are going to Las Vegas this weekend because my husband is working. He's a musician and his band is playing at Gilley's; we're staying at Treasure Island. It's not my idea of a great fourth of July holiday, but it's a free weekend at a hotel! My daughter is going, too, as she will be babysitting the other band mates' kids. During the day we are going to see the aquarium, get a pedicure, do some shopping, maybe go to the pool, and eat at a great restaurant. My daughter and husband are going to do the free-fall jump off the Stratosphere and I am going to try not to cry. ;-} We went to Hoover Dam last year and really loved it, but we went in November. If you go remember to bring lots of water because it will be HOTTTT! I didn't know about the botanical garden until this thread. I might want to go there, too.
  10. My dad was killed in a hit and run accident almost 2 years ago. I have a cousin who is named after him, and I didn't find it awkward or sad to hear my dad's name said at all during that time and I don't believe my mom did either. I think, if I were your friend, I would prefer that you just came out and asked me if I were uncomfortable hearing the name spoken. That's the only way you won't hurt her unintentionally. I'm sorry for your friend's loss, and I'm sure you are a comfort to her.
  11. So sorry! I hope he comes home or you find him soon. We got our first dog last year and he is definitely wedged deeply into my heart and I would be heartbroken if we lost him. HUGS!
  12. I agree it was probably indigestion, but it could also be the beginning of gall bladder troubles. I had 1 sudden gall bladder attack that put me in the ER where I was diagnosed with a gall bladder full of stones. I had another attack that same night after being sent home. I had surgery about 1 month later to remove it. I was able to wait that long only because we had my daughter's college graduation, family visiting and big party planning going on. So gall bladder issues can come on suddenly, maybe you could read up about it and see if that sounds like what you experienced.
  13. If you feel like driving an hour due west to Crawfordsville, you can visit the extremely interesting and historic General Lew Wallace study. He wrote Ben Hur, was a Civil War general, and ambassador to several countries. It only takes 2 hours maximum to go through the whole thing. (I love history, my dad took me there for the first time about 20 years ago, and I just went again with my youngest last June.) http://www.ben-hur.com/
  14. Have you been to Bazbeaux Pizza? My cousin LOVES it, but I thought it was just OK. Your opinion?
  15. After listening to Adam Andrews read it at the homeschool convention recently, in such an entertaining and motivational way, how about an illustrated copy of The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow? We had a beautiful copy when my daughter was younger.
  16. Conner Prairie living history museum is fun. It's located just north of Indianapolis. And the Children's Museum is rated the best in the nation by many organizations. https://www.connerprairie.org/ My favorite place of all, though it's about an hour from Indy, is Turkey Run State Park. They have excellent walking and hiking trails and the park is just beautiful: http://www.turkeyrunstatepark.com/ Enjoy!
  17. When I was in high school, back in the dark ages, it was counted as a social studies credit.
  18. I don't use my blender very often, so I didn't need anything really pricey or heavy-duty when I was looking for a replacement. My hubby came home with a Kitchen Aid blender one day and I really like it. It works so much better than my really cheap-o one I'd had for years, and I think it will last a long time.
  19. That must not have made it to the west coast. I've never seen that before. It's kind of bizarre!
  20. I live in Upland, which is inland from the ocean about 40 miles. It is HOT. It's 90 degrees this week. I think turning of the AC is a good idea. ;-)
  21. I haven't read any of the responses. We are Christians who practice our faith in our home, in our work and hopefully are people that can see that we live what we believe by the way we treat others. We always pray that we want to bring honor to God and be a blessing to those around us, being light in the world. This is how we have brought up our children. We cannot *make* them continue on this path, however, when they become adults. We can continue to pray for them, and pray that the way they have been taught seems truthful to them and they will make a personal choice to follow Jesus. This doesn't seem any different to me from how any parents of any religion/non-religious belief raise their children.
  22. We have a kitty who likes to sneak out if we aren't careful. We usually see her right away, but there have been a couple of times when she stayed out all night. We scoured the neighborhood and my daughter made a big "LOST" sign poster board and hung it on our mailbox which is next to the street. Once we found her sleeping on the tire of my husband's truck and the other time she came to the back door on her own. I hope your kitty comes home, too.
  23. We plan to use TT Geometry this year. I'd like to find a used version 2.0, too, but not having luck in the area. We've been using TT for 3 years and don't use the automatic grading feature at all. I know that's a big selling point for most, but I found that, in the beginning when my daughter was using it, it lead to too much guesswork instead of actually working the problems out. Now she has to work every problem out on paper and we review the answers together. She makes any necessary corrections herself. If she still can't get the right answer only then is she allowed to see the answer on the computer. It's been working great for us. I'm glad to see some positive reviews here for TT Geometry. Daughter is not a math whiz, though she does do very well, and TT has been a great program for her.
  24. We are experiencing this at our house, too. I think I am more upset at a growing distance between the mom and me than my daughter seems to be at the distance between her and her friend she's known most of her life. Life's interests and commitments make friendship tough to hold onto.
  25. We used Singapore all the way through 6A-6B. By the end of that last school year my daughter absolutely hated math, 6A-B were so difficult for her. She had been doing great up to that point. I switched to Teaching Textbooks for 7th grade, and even though she would have placed into their Algebra 1 level, I decided to give her the pre-algebra instead, to build her confidence back up with a little bit of easier level work. BEST decision I've made regarding her schooling. I don't think I'm any help here, but just agreeing that the 6A-B level seemed so much more difficult.
