  1. I strongly believe in reading aloud to children, for as long as they will let you. It opens so many doors to great discussions and continues the bonding relationship! My daughter is 14 and I still read to her each morning, whether it be from a novel we've chosen, a faith strengthening book, history, or news. I understand how it would be more difficult in your situation, so maybe listening to books on tape/mp3 would be a good alternative. I also recommend reading The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease to give you greater understanding on the importance and benefits of continuing to read aloud to your kids, even after they are perfectly capable of reading alone.
  2. How to buy the right microscope: http://www.coin-stamp-collecting.com/microscope.htm This is the microscope we ordered a few years ago: http://www.hometrainingtools.com/home-1000x-microscope/p/MI-4100DXL/ Hope this helps.
  3. From what I've heard, and I have little experience with this, if your daughter plans to take the SAT's then she should take geometry in 10th grade. I wrestled with this decision myself, since my daughter took TT Algebra 1 in 8th grade. If she took geometry in 9th then it wouldn't be fresh in her mind for the SAT in 11 grade, so we decided that she would take Alg. 2 this year, her freshman, and geometry in 10th.
  4. My daughter has finished TT pre-algebra, algebra I, and is 1/2 way through algebra II. After waching the lesson on the computerI have her work out all problems in a notebook, then we go over the answers together. I found that when she just worked them out and keyed the answers into the computer she wasn't actually understanding the process and relied on the 2nd chance option too much. Then I make her correct the answers. She can often see almost immediately where she went wrong and if not she can watch the practice problems.. We don't move along until she gets 100% on an assignment, or 85% or higher on a test.
  5. PBS American Experience has some great documentaries. I didn't see one specifically about VietNam, but there are others you may be interested in. http://video.pbs.org/program/american-experience/episodes/?page=1
  6. We homeschooled with a charter from 2nd through 8th grade. I opted to file a private school affadavit this year for 9th grade because I did not want to jump through all the hoops any more. There is so little freedom for high school through the charter school because of the new rules that say you must use "highly qualified teachers" for their classes and only their curriculum I might just as well have put her back in a brick and mortar school. So we left and are very happy being independent this year.
  7. If you need a cheap resource for Sparknotes, I find Sparknotes guides all the time at second-hand bookstores, the library sale rooms and the thrift store.
  8. I have had it since I was a kid. So frustrating. It's worse when I'm tired.
  9. Thank you so much! I was thinking this would be a good idea, but was too lazy to do it myself. :thumbup1:
