  1. We are thinking home instead of online, but I'll check into this. Thank you so much!
  2. I just can't believe my sweetie will be in 11th and taking college courses! Algebra II - not sure if she'll stick with TC or if she'll try Mr.D? World History - Oak Meadow syllabus with Our Human Story (Crash Course and/or Great Course videos) Chemistry - I have no idea what we'll use yet! Any suggestions for an introductory Chemistry? (She's going for the dental hygiene program but not ready to take Chemistry DE yet) Eng 111 and Intro. to Computers -- DE 1st Semester Eng 112, Public Speaking, and online Music Appreciation -- DE 2nd Semester British Literature -- working on list Conversational Spanish (III) - tutor Health -- Using OM syllabus only & Great Course Auto Upkeep - With Dad Voice lessons/guitar/piano Ballroom Dancing Volunteer Work Experience SAT/ACT prep..... has already taken BW Writing prep and did very well! Looking at this list, it seems like a lot, but I think she can handle it!
  3. I bought the World History one to use with Oak Meadow 7th World History.... I think my ds will like it pretty well!
  4. My ds will be in 6th grade but we will be using Oak Meadow 5th grade science because he wants more of a general science.
  5. Dd will be taking some DE classes in the fall, one of those being Eng 111. This would be a writing class only, no literature. She will most likely take Eng 112 in Spring of 2018. This year she will study World History and she likes the look of British Literature. Would taking Center for Lit discussion only be okay? (Our plan before thinking of DE was for her to take CfL's British Lit with the writing.) Is discussion going to be enough instead of writing about it ( Lit analysis)? I'm not sure how heavy Eng 111 will be. We are also looking at EIL British but I think she'd prefer the discussion class......
  6. I posted ours on K-8 Board as well.... but I'll post here too for Logic Board. Next year I won't be teaching at co-op and the kids have asked for a break anyways to get back to "home" schooling. I still might try teaching a few classes, but at home, for science and writing/literature. We'll see. Here is what ds and I have been thinking about for 6th grade: btw, this is my kid who doesn't want to grow up and just loves being a kid...... he's not wanting to be a middle schooler so we are going to ease into this stage. I'm letting him call the shots with some subjects! Math: CLE 5/6 Spelling: AAS (I may create a student book for him to work independently or use Phonetic Zoo on my shelf) Writing: IEWs new World History Theme book(coming out in summer) with Bravewriter sprinkled in..... he is enjoying our Bravewriter Co-op class this year! Taking a grammar break for sixth grade. He has completed FLL 1-4 and is almost through Jr. AG...... We'll just discuss grammar through writing. He has earned it! History: Oak Meadow 7th grade World History..... folding in Project Passport with a quick unit on Greece/Rome at his request. Literature: OM lit list......replacing some with what we have already..... finding BW Arrow or Boom guides for the ones he picks. Summer of the Monkeys Shakespeare Play ? Biography of Charles Dickens; Oliver Twist or A Christmas Carol Lyddie Amelia Earhart Mama's Bank Account Journey to America Helen Keller Goodbye, Vietnam Zlata's Diary A Single Shard Throw in short stories and Poetry Science: It's going to be hard to top Elements and Carbon Chemistry that I am teaching at co-op this year. Ds has loved it! He decided on OM 5th grade Science...... he wanted a more general science for 6th. OM will include Environmental, Life, & Physical. We'll throw in Ellen McHenry where we can! Spanish: our wonderful Tudor Fallacy Detective, continue Art, Guitar, Krav Maga/Fight Club, Typing

Decided against OM, too much cost. I have on the shelf.... History Odyssey, Usborne History Encyclopedia, Big Fat History Notebook, Story of Mankind (already completed SOTW)..... we may take the WTM approach adding in activities through Project Passport and videos. Less time on History and more time on Science this year, at his request! (Thrilled about Ellen's new Rocks & Dirt unit!!! Completing this before we start OM.... skipping Life Science section in OM since we will devote 7th grade year to Life) https://www.facebook.com/EllenMcHenrysBasementWorkshop/posts/1433298783359459:0 Spanish: our wonderful Tudor Our schedule didn't work out for our tutor, so we will continue with suggested videos, games, and vocab through the year. Fallacy Detective, continue Art, Guitar, Krav Maga/Fight Club, Typing Ongoing Project: Remodeling his schoolbus into a boys hangout!! He's making headway.....
  8. You have a very good point! I'm jotting this question down on my list of questions to ask our advisor on Monday. Thank you!
  9. Our advisor did print out the course requirements for the dental hygiene and assistant programs. We also had the chance to meet with the director of the hygiene program. She says they don't even accept students right out of high school at our CC and that the program is as competitive as the nursing program. They only accept 14 students. At our CC, dental hygiene is part of the Biotechnology division and not the Allied Health. Basically, there are no hoops for homeschoolers to jump. They must follow the same procedure as any other student applying and taking courses to become accepted. She suggest to get as many as the general ed classes out of the way before applying and take the optional courses in the packet that could give you extra points.
  10. To qualify for CC she would not need APs.... if she was to transfer to UNC school, we are in NC, I don't believe, according to the requirements, that she would need to have CLEPs or APs to apply. Good question though for me to double check with her advisor on especially if it impacts admissions to hygiene program, which is up in the air at the moment. I hope I can get my music loving, artsy, detailed & organized girl on the right path......thanks for your insight!
  11. Thank you all for commenting! We met with a very welcoming advisor at our CC yesterday that advices high schoolers only. We also have a group of homeschoolers that may try to take some of the same general classes together. The advisor did tell me that she will fill us in on which advisors to steer clear of and who are the best! I was thrilled about that. I don't know if she plans to transfer to a University but don't want to short change her in case she changes her mind next year. If she chooses to go the more technical route/degree at CC then I don't see the need for AP except some of you have a point that it may be a better class than CC English. She can take Eng.111 online which is mainly writing.... she was wanting to take the Center for Lit online class for World Lit. There are so many decisions. Thank you for helping me think through this process.
  12. My rising junior is trying to decide between AP English and AP World History with fellow homeschoolers OR English 111 & 112... WCiv 1-2 at CC. AP classes are expensive and anticipating for test is stressful. She is very strong in English and History so she may very well be just fine. I was hoping to have her take Chem and possibly another Bio at CC for 11-12th grade. Should I rethink that if science isn't her strong suit? She will evidently have to just go for it since she is thinking of dental hygiene and there's lots of science! Or just tackle Chemistry and A&P at home 11-12 then wait till college for more advance sciences. She would like to get some of the general Ed classes at CC out of the way before graduation. Eng 112-113 (online) Psychology Sociology Public Speaking Computer class (online) Chem 130-A(lab) if she sticks to dental hygiene path) I need your thoughts on how you determined the AP path vs the CC path or did you tackle both!? Thanks in advance.
  13. :bigear: Listening in and bumping your post as we are headed into Chemistry in the fall and our Co-op will be non-existent. :blushing:
  14. We use a mix of IEW and Bravewriter Online classes....... I adore BW! My 8th grader took Middle School Writing Projects and is currently taking Kidswrite Intermediate ( Angela Harris is a fabulous teacher and really pulls out ideas from my dd) Having someone else critique my dd's writing has been a blessing! I'm thinking ahead for 9th right now...... we may run through Elegant Essay ..... then for 9th grade we may jump into Advanced US Theme book (adding in EIL American lit suggestion) or more BW online classes. I'm saving Windows for 10th grade once she has mastered a variety of essays. My 10th grader dd is strong in writing..... she just finished BWs SAT/ACT writing class and scored very high! I think she is planning on taking College English for 11th. She has taken an English co-op class this year that included AP elements.... My kids enjoy the Themed IEW books over the video lessons..... looks like IEW is coming out with the high school level World History theme book this summer.
  15. Thank you Lori! Your post is awesome...... we are in the middle of The Hobbit with my 8th grader. Love the receipes from Middle Earth and poetry link!
  16. I'm teaching Ellen McHenry's Elements and Carbon Chem for grades 5-8th at co-op this year. I'm attaching our resources page..... I also made a Chemistry YouTube page for videos.... https://docs.google.com/document/d/10FfHvse8ywRYKftsGoIJ6GBOyu6hcRbK5VIsF9L_1_0
  17. We are looking for editions that are easy to travel with to and from co-ops and ones with a good size print. I don't want to have to break out the magnifying glass!! I've looked on Amazon for reviews but it is hard to gauge what's really true. This will be for my 8th and 10th graders! Thanks!
  18. Seriously, they must have had tons of emails about not being offered in fall session. Guess they decided to squeeze it in! Happy they did!
  19. Just got on BW and saw that there IS a Middle School Writing Projects class!http://www.bravewriter.com/online-classes/middle-school-writing-projects I signed my 8th grader up to take it! Yay!
