  1. Yes, feedback... let me get back to you tomorrow, please! My daughter probably has more to share than I, as she is doing this solo. ** I can say that since we opted out of using the scheduled labs, the CK01B lab kit has been put on the back burner. Dd wanted to go through the material through the year and then do a “lab intensive†over the summer. She will be taking Chemistry (again... only b/c she needs it to count for dental hygiene program) at the CC next fall and I’m anxious to see how much of the material she learned this year crosses over. Talk more tomorrow!
  2. Thank you! I will keep your daughter in mind...... pretty cool that she is assisting!
  3. Though I will spend more money, maybe taking Bravewriter classes for writing and literature will be a better fit. I just like how BlueTent has all the components of a full English class! I’ll keep thinking on it.
  4. Well, okay. Thank you ladies! I have already paid the registration fee, but now I’m really dubious about going any further. Dd likes the layout of BlueTent English 1 and expresses her need for structure. I so don’t want her to feel bogged down in one subject. She’ll have a heavier load for 10th, though I also want her to have the experience of having classes that mimic the workload of a community college class so she has a smoother transition for 11th grade. Thank you again for the reviews! Keep ‘em coming!
  5. My rising 10th grader and I are looking into Blue Tent Honors English 1. She does need more practice in writing and needs the structure of an outside teacher. For those who have taken English 1, will this be okay for 10th grade even though it's listed to begin in 9th? I'm wondering if this class will prepare her for ENG 111 that she is wanting to take for 11th grade through dual enrollment. This year we are using Power in Your Hands and should finish it..... for literature we are working through some World Lit books using a mix of materials. Thanks in advance! Update: please see post #26
  6. We have been happy with Mr.D Math! You can take it At Your Own Pace....with live tutoring sessions available twice a week. OR you can take their classes Live. https://mrdmath.com/ There is not a textbook with Mr.D math. He has work pages that are to be printed. Overall, his lessons are set up in Modules with chapters and are easy for my kids to follow through without getting lost. Pretty organized. Plus, he does keep track of the pacing.
  7. BYL Grade 7 is Geography...... http://buildyourlibrary.com/purchase-grade-7-curriculum/ She has a great book list and also explains how she used it for her high schooler. http://buildyourlibrary.com/multi-grade-teaching-an-example/ She actually uses Oak Meadow materials (text & syllabus).
  8. We used Elements and CC last year at co-op. It was a fun class! Thanks!
  9. Awakening an old thread! RootAnn, did you ever get any advice about Bookshark 7th grade science? Did you use it? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. My rising 7th grader is interested, but I’d love something that has lots of hands-on activities/experiments! I’m hoping it will fill his requests. Thank you *Edit to add: We will skip the Earth Science topics because we have been covering most of it through Oak Meadow this year. S&S of Science 7 https://www.bookshark.com/media/wysiwyg/pdf/HSB-2017-scopeandsequence.pdf
  10. Have you seen Annotating Literary Elements? It can be used for all ages. Once you go through the lessons, you can apply it to everything you read. Short stories, poetry, novels, etc. https://www.rootedinlanguage.com/shop/annotating-literary-elements I heard about it through BraveWriter, which is another one to look at. You could work through Arrow Literature guides after a run through Annotating Literary Elements.
  11. This site is fantastic! I’ve never heard of it. Do you mind telling us what you liked/disliked about it? Besides adding in Grammar, would this be a pretty complete English package? Thank you for posting!
  12. FundaFunda Academy's Geography looks really interesting & engaging! We used Oak Meadow's Geography(cultural) & Mapping the World by Heart(physical) We tweaked Oak Meadow to fit our lifestyle..... Lots of travel videos that year!!
  13. BraveWriter’s Arrow or Pouch of Boomerangs. 😊 The guides are set up for a month long study (4 weeks) Literary devices, word play, copy work, Grammar, spelling, etc are all included. Last year, I taught 3-5th grade lit at co-op using Arrow guides/books. At the end of each book we threw a themed party highlighting elements from the book. It was such a fun class for us all.
  14. I don't know why I'm overthinking 7th grade!! My last 7th grader. ? Makes me a bit sad. I have TONS of ideas... just starting to narrow things down and trying to get ds's opinion. I'm hoping to either teach a book club/themed poetry teatime and/or science class for middle schoolers. We have actually named our reading group: Reading Cafè with Treats, Teas, & Tales.... I will be incorporating Annotating Literary Elements to our BW Arrow/Pouch of Arrow selections, themed poetry once a month, short stories thrown in, and LOTS of fun activities, and treats, to ignite the love of reading! I will have a Facebook Page hopefully by the end of summer if anyone is interested in checking it out. This may change a billion times before summer! Math: Keep on with CLE, finish 600, then start 700 or Mr. D Pre-Algebra or TT Pre-Alg b/c it's on the shelf, or MM Pre-Algebra. Ugh!...the decisions! HELP! He may not get to Pre-Alg until 8th grade... so I'm not going to overthink this. History: 2nd half of American History (Notgrass & videos) stretch 15 units to 30 weeks. Alternate with Painless Government. Selected Read Alouds for each Unit. Making a schedule for this so he can work independently. Science: Bookshark 7 Robotics/Technology/Engineering, omitting the Earth Science weeks b/c we took care of that for 6th grade with Oak Meadow. So that leaves 25 weeks. Then we may add in some Biology topics for 8-10 weeks. Decided to go with RSO Level 2 Biology Writing: IEW Theme book: Rockets, Radar, & Robiotics Tech-Based Writing OR Jump In...still researching this. Journal: BW Free Write Fridays. Grammar: Grammar through literature and Fix It Robin Hood or Word Study (RiL) Vocabulary: WordBuild free online or looking into RiL Rita Cevasco's Word Study Curriculum which incorporates spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. Literature: Reading Cafè with Treats, Teas, & Tales: From the Mixed-Up Files....., Holes, A Long Way from Chicago, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, The Shakespeare Stealer, Love That Dog. Short stories and poetry, too. Logic: Fallacy Detective Continue Boys Health... boot camp exercises with Dad. I may sign him up for 1 or 2 classes online with Outschool or Coding on FundaFunda Acad. Just noticed this link to free computer basics from poster on K-8 board: https://www.gcflearnfree.org/topics/ (Have I mentioned how much I love this Forum?!) Ongoing Project: He and his dad are converting a schoolbus into a teen hangout and building an outhouse right outside of it.

  16. Has anyone used this with their middle schoolers? If so, do you mind leaving a review of what you liked or disliked about it? Is this all you used for writing and literature or did you supplement with writing? The sample on the website just doesn't give enough. https://writingwithsharonwatson.com/their-blood-tingled/ Thanks in advance! Btw, I'm considering it for my rising 7th grader. :thumbup1:
  17. Scroll down to post #6..... Mr. D explains what textbooks he teaches from. We have been using Mr. D since last summer. Both of my girls loathe math, but Mr. D's math is working for them. They both feel the concepts are explained in a way that they can easily understand. If they run into problems, he has certain days of the week where you can get extra help. My girls are using the "AYOP" classes, not the "live" classes.
  18. My 11th grader & 9th grader are using Notgrass World History, but we have added Oak Meadow coursebook to it for activities, discussion, projects, etc. We have the DK 3rd Edition History Encyclopedia for research & extra reading. I have a couple extra textbooks that I got really cheap, Glencoe World & K12's Our Human Story, but they rarely look up anything in them. We just pull from whatever we find and follow lots of bunny trails..... I have scheduled out Map Trek, Crash Course, & Great Course videos as well. My ninth grader's literature list lines up with her World History this year. Btw, we skip the Bible lessons in Notgrass to allow for 5th day of the week for extra research, videos, conversations, etc. Netflix and Amazon are our friends..... Neither one of my kids are going for a History major.... so keeping history engaging and not so structured makes it more enjoyable for them, which helps in keeping it off the back burner, and allows them to pursue their other loves.....
  19. I have two high schoolers using Mr.D Math.... Alg. I and II They have lots of review, quizzes, and practice problems. They also have certain days to go to the online tutor session if they are having trouble. This is the first math that my girls have actually learned best from.
  20. Here is one from Janice Campbell’s website: https://everyday-education.com/free-gpa-calculator/
  21. I'll do my best to answer...... 1. If he is wanting to go to public school, they will most likely give him a placement test to see where he falls in core subjects. You could walk in with a "middle school transcript" and yearly state test scores (if any) and have more advantage in what classes he starts taking. 2. In our county in NC, high school Jr. and Sr.'s can enroll in DE through their community college. (tuition is free, we pay for books) I would check with the local CC to get requirements..... you would start application process in late winter/early spring of 10th grade, so gather as much info & talk to DE high school adviser at the college. 3. I know our local public high school allows homeschoolers to take up to 2 core or elective classes. It really depends on the principal/school and what they are willing to do. Again, I'd email/call for that info...... the only problem we had with this option was the driving back and forth, if your kid isn't driving themself yet. Also, check around the area for local high school co-op groups..... that may be just what you need for accountability. Region 1: NCHE TCHE Transylvania County Home Educators (link to their facebook page on this site) Good luck to you all on your move to NC! Jana
  22. Here is the thread discussing Learn Chemistry Better. You can scroll down to #8 to see how we are handling Chemistry this year for my 11th grader!
  23. Here's another 9th grade planning link...... http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/586673-what-are-you-doing-for-9th-grade/ My second high schooler! eek! I am just now finalizing the line up...... busy, busy with family health issues and house renovations..... I seriously need a vacation & sleep! I've been changing my mind on our materials a lot this summer........ I can't really find anything that grabs a hold of me, leaving me to alter everything I get my hands on. My girls do great with a syllabus on hand..... I'm working on creating a schedule/syllabus for them to keep track of their assignments (and me) and they can use their planners to jot down what they have completed. I plan to check off on it either daily or weekly.....no slacking this year! That's the goal anyway. Math: Mr. D Algebra I 1 credit English 9: Power in Your Hands Writing (hopefully finishing the whole book....) 1 credit Finishing Analytical Grammar (leaving out the diagramming) (Annotation Lesson) World Literature (Using lots of different resources: LLATL World, Essential Literary Terms, Glencoe guides, and Sparknotes with a history related booklist) Vocabulary.com History: Notgrass Exploring World History-- Took Day 5 Bible lesson out (I've created a schedule to include Earliest Humans/Evolution/Origins before Lesson 1, added Great Course lectures, Crash Course lectures, Map Trek, note-taking, and projects.) We plan to watch documentaries and movies throughout the year! 1 credit Science: Biology with Fundafunda Academy using the Miller & Levine text 1 credit Health & PE: Oak Meadow Health Syllabus & KidsHealth Teen website for research 1 credit Ballroom/Swing Dancing Spring Track & Field Electives: Personal Finance (Dave Ramsey) 1/2 credit 7 week Study Skills Course with VHSG 1/4 credit Volunteer: Horse Therapy Riding Center, Ronald McDonald House (holiday baking) Spring Driver's Ed 1/2 credit or none (I didn't give older dd credit....maybe I should?) May add in Auto Upkeep (1/2 credit) in the Spring too..... older dd is taking that class with Dad! Saving Foreign Language for grades 10-12th
