  1. Do you have suggestions for the best high school health text/book to use for a semester length course? Thank you!
  2. did your ds/dd have to take at least one class that year to be eligible for scholarships? I just heard this from someone, and it sounds right.
  3. Thanks, I will ask about the doubling-up. They say nothing on their site about SAT subject tests, but I know they take up to 32 credits with CLEP. I just wasn't clear as to why one would do the SAT subject tests. What is the advantage if you pass the CLEP tests of the same subject. Doesn't CLEP show that the child actually knows the subject matter and didn't just get a pass from mom?
  4. We are pretty sure we are going to do a gap year after high school. If so, when should my ds take his SAT? Can he take it after his senior year?
  5. Is it worth it to take the subject tests for SAT also? We are planning to take as many CLEP tests as possible.
  6. I just saw your message from Aug 31st. I haven't been on! I'm so sorry about your broken foot. You, right? or is it one of your kids? I hope you are doing much better. I understand about all that must be going. It feels good to be able to be flexible with school when life is that way. How are the plans coming for the wedding? Is it proving to be an enjoyable process for her and you all?

  7. Hi Cheryl, I'm doing well, thanks. We have had a good summer. I am presently planning history and have a few more subjects to do before we start on Monday (31st). When will you all be starting?

  8. Congratulations to your daughter and family, Cheryl. What a story about her dress/designer! That is so wonderful. Have they set a date? Are you having fun thinking through all the plans? Has she decided on colors?

I have posted some new photos of recent cakes in my portfolio on line: cakeartbycathy.blogspot.com

If you still need a cake artist, just let me know. I'd love to serve you and your family.

Are you all off for the summer? or do you do year-around? We are thoroughly enjoying being off-schedule, however I can't believe how much is on our calendar for the rest of the summer....always goes by so fast.

I enjoyed getting into Drawing With Children more in depth. I appreciate your tip on using good-quality colored pencils; I think we will do that.

    Have a wonderful time planning!

    Kind regards,

    Cathy

  9. I can't really speak to the other factors, but I definitely understand your concerns. The thing I will share is that my ds seemed intelligent, but always was very slow with his work too. He needed my assistance & supervision much more than was normal. We finally got him tested and found he was struggling with auditory processing disorder. I had no idea how much this affected his whole person until we started seeing incredible improvement in school work and his personality after the ed therapy. There is so much to it that I cannot go into it here (PM me if you want to talk more), but at the foundation was a disorientation that kept him feeling "lost" in a world of sounds and instructions. I mention this not to alarm you or worry you, but just to share in case there may be more going on than what meets the eye. When you describe your frustrations, they sound very familiar to my own for years. Our guy was very mature, sharp and got excellent grades, so it was hard in some ways to believe he was struggling. But the other indications finally drove us to get him tested, and now I can't express to you our gratitude that we were lead to this educational therapy he received b/c it literally changed his life. God bless you and your efforts to figure this all out.
  10. We used Canon Press with Nance and have been very pleased. I especially appreciate the supplementary DVDs, which allowed my ds to learn from Nance--took more off my plate and allowed me to learn with him. The DVDs were expensive, but well worth it.
  11. Hi Joanna,

I just wanted to ask how your birthday cake went. Did it come out like you hoped?

    Kind regards,

    Cathy

  12. That is really a nice resource, Kathie. Thanks for sharing!
  13. Depending on which link path I went, I got different information on Saxon's site. Then when I saw that Christian Book Distributor's and Rainbow Resources were offering the Homeschool Kit for Saxon Geometry and the standard Homeschooling Solutions Manual, I realized they really are coming out with the homeschooling version.
  14. For years the state of CA (and I don't know if any others too) would not approve Saxon as an option for their schools b/c of no separate Geometry text in the series. And colleges did not consider it rigorous enough, so that was another negative. So most hmslers I know out here have supplemented another Geometry course in the midst of the series so that their dcs would be sure to be prepared for SATs and so colleges would approve. CA is a huge market, of course, so I'm sure the Saxon marketing/sales dept is cheering.
  15. I really appreciate your clarification. I may just go with the comprehensive book in total & 5e sounds good. Thanks so much everyone.
  16. I see what SWB recommends in WTM, but there are a million Spielvogel's to choose from on Amazon. :glare: My oldest is beginning high school this fall, and we will be on the final leg (Modern) period of our cycle. Which Spielvogel do you recommend and why? Are they that different in content? layout? I just want to be sure to get what I want because of the expense.
  17. I just found out there is a homeschooling edition coming out this month or next. I just ordered the hmsch kit from Rainbow. I have corresponded with a salesperson at DIVE about any plans for an upcoming DIVE for this course. She said there aren't any for now, but encouraged me to email Dr. Shormann at diveintomath@sbcglobal.net If any of you would like to email him as well to encourage him to create a DIVE for the new Saxon Geometry, I think he would be very receptive. The salesperson said he loves to hear from people.
  18. I am planning to use this with my ds next year and want to hear how different it is (text) than the homeschool editions that I'm familiar with. It looks like they haven't developed this Geometry yet in a hmschool edition yet. Am I correct? Has it been easy to teach still? And....what do I need to buy? (I haven't seen a DIVE CD on it yet, so I'm guessing that isn't available....) But what would be most helpful to buy? I'd appreciate any insights! Thanks
  19. Yes and No. :001_smile: Yes, they do. And no 36 is not too early. :001_smile: 38 was when it hit me. Are you doing okay?
