  1. Except for the celery and strawflowers, the seeds in all of my milk jugs have sprouted. I wish I had done more, but alas, I had a milk jug shortage. I may do a few more with summer vegetables to see how they turn out. Anyhow, for flowers I have rose mallow and echinacea, sprouted from seed given out at the library program, and also anise hyssop from my own seed. I also have mixed lettuce, Dazzling Blue Kale and giant red mustard. I opened up the jug with the lettuce today and took out the little plants and planted them in my large half barrel. I just about could have cut them and used them as mesclun, but I want them to grow to full-sized plants. I'm enlarging my small fenced in garden in the back yard. Well, I should say that my older son and DH are doing this for me! 😁 I will probably gently nag to get it done sooner, because I'm ready to get some things planted in the ground. March is such a fun month! I know the weather can be wild, but the anticipation of the warmth at the end of the month is exciting.
  2. I loathe squirrels. They cause so much damage to my plants and yard. We have very large wild hickory and walnut trees, and that is probably the reason we have a never-ending population of squirrels. We use the squirrelinator to trap them. This thing really works! I had doubts when my husband first bought it, but our record is three squirrels at one time. Crazy! Still, I'm not sure how much good it does, because more always take their place. ETA: I got some cloches for Christmas. They were a top item on my list.
  3. Oh, that sounds beautiful! All I have ever seen are yellow forsythia. Mine are getting ready to bloom, probably in the next few days.
  4. We would probably eat it here. We'd open it and smell/inspect it first!
  5. I have found good books in Free Little Libraries. One of my finds was an autographed copy of a Clyde Edgerton book! One of my sons and I both read it, and I'll probably drop it off at a different Free Little Library some day. I also once found two volumes of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, although I left them there. It's true that there is often junk, but sometimes there are good things, too.
  6. I've not done much other than get a couple of milk jugs sown with echinacea and rose mallow seeds. I wanted to plant some anise hyssop this weekend, and I brought in my milk jug already filled with dirt because it is so much easier to plant seeds at counter height inside. However, the dirt was frozen since it went down into the teens the other night. So I had to put it in the mud room sink to defrost, and I'll probably try again tomorrow.
  7. I didn't know you could eat pumpkin leaves! I thought you were joking, but I looked it up, and sure enough, they can be eaten! I'm happy to know this.
  8. Thank you for posting this. I don't use that specific product, but I use others, and the dry-eye is especially bad at this time of year.
  9. Sorry about your car! You did great on your grocery bill for the month. Wow! I thought I did well at $435.
  10. Wow! That's crazy. We stayed in a Vrbo for my son's graduation in December, and it was very simple. That was the first time I ever used one of these services. So glad we didn't try AirBnB
  11. This is a good point. On the parent FB page for DS's uni, many of the parents who are nurses said that the students should try to go the community college route, earn the RN there, get a job, and then complete the BSN while working. They said that most hospitals and medical facilities will then pay for their employed nurses to upgrade to the BSN. RN to BSN Uniform Articulation Agreements The RN to BSN Uniform Articulation Agreement promotes educational advancement opportunities for registered nurses moving between North Carolina community colleges and the constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina and the signatory campuses of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) to complete BSN degrees. It is a Five Block Degree Plan that includes required general education and nursing prerequisite courses. Students who follow this Five Block Degree Plan will meet the entrance requirements at all of the North Carolina public RN to BSN programs and the signatory NCICU programs.
  12. ETA: Looks like popmom already said this. I should read before I post! I think the seed starting mix I got will be OK -- the package says, " We have added a nutrient starter charge that includes worm castings, kelp and fully-cured compost." It is this mix from Coast of Maine. https://shop.coastofmaine.com/products/sprout-island-organic-seed-starter?variant=39791868543043&gclid=Cj0KCQiA8t2eBhDeARIsAAVEga3LeQs14H3ifvPQFgWqVPqLQHAYz2eSLXNOM1fbQIJaQWweI3lot0EaAkkMEALw_wcB
  13. Yes! Universities are the gatekeepers for many jobs, and universities aren't admitting enough students in critical jobs. My son is in the mechanical engineering program at UNC Charlotte. Mechanical engineering is the second most competitive program at this university. Do you know what the number one program is? Nursing! It is so hard to get into the nursing program, and the University takes way more pre-nursing students than they will ever have room for in their program. If a pre-nursing student makes one B, he or she will probably not make it into the BS in nursing program. Now, obviously we want the best to be on our medical team, but a B, or two, doesn't make someone a poor candidate for nursing school. There are just not enough spots in the program. Students who make a B or two are told to find another career! And that's the same with most Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs in our state. And yet we don't have enough nurses!! You would think they would expand the programs to allow enough students in to meet the needs of the state.
  14. I did pretty good this week. So far I spent $10 for groceries, about $11 to send DS some food to college via Prime, and about $40 for gardening supplies. One of my best money savers this week was a 5.3 pound Purdue chicken I got for $3.98 at Walmart, reduced for quick sale. We got three suppers with generous portions of meat out of that bird, and I'll be making chicken soup today with the carcass and about 1 cup of leftover meat, plus whatever comes off the carcass. So 4 meals with meat for $3.98! Overall, I had hoped to spend only $500 this month, but instead I'm at about $750. Definitely better than what I would have spent if I weren't purposefully tracking my spending. So that's good.
  15. My sis had her first and only baby at 47. My niece is getting ready to turn 7 now! Both mom and child are healthy today. I guess the only difficulty was that my sis had a long labor, as is common with a first, and she ended up with a C-section.
