  1. We are just getting back into cold weather outdoor sports. When my dds' played soccer the first games were in March and chilly. The last games were October and chilly once the sun went down. I was cold. I wanted something hot when I got int he car! I thought heaven would be a Keurig that ran off the cigarette lighter in the car. DS is playing *winter* outdoor sports. Like he is wanting to sign up for an all day outdoor tourney on New Year's day! If I go, which the mom in me wants too, I will be quite cold by the end. (This is NC. We could end up with a warm day. But I don't want to count on it.) And then preseason games are Jan and Feb. In season games are March, April. Again, I'd love a Keurig that pugs in. Since I can't find that, a good heatable travel mug. The ones I see on Amazon are hit or miss. Three stars, maybe 3 1/2. Nothing 4 or higher. Does anyone have recommendations? I will have on as many clothes as I can and still move. Blankets, hat, gloves, mittens (maybe both at the same time). Hand warmers. I may have to drive our van so I have a seat warmer once I get in the car to come home. Oh and It's not the coffee making ability. It's the ability to have a hot drink quickly. I'd be happy to make something at home and be able to heat it up when the game(s) is over. Cheryl
  2. DH did taxes this weekend and we decided we could take the kids on a cruise for the girls' spring break. Everything is booked - cruise and flights down there, transfers. We are doing the big no-no on flying on the day of. Don't tell me what a horrible idea it is. It saves $250 a night going each way since we are booking so late, all the cheap rooms are gone. So anyway - we cruised 6 years ago so we aren't brand new, but we don't have a lot of experience. I do know about the shoe rack on the door, extra plugs and stuff. But Freestyle - what does that mean in practice? I would love not to take a skirt and nice shoes! We won't spend extra money for the nice restaurants. Somewhere on the web site it says "reservations recommended". How important are they? OK, ports - Freeport, Nassau, their island. Free and cheap ideas that aren't all go shopping or go to the beach. How cold will it be on board in early March? I get cold btw. Oh and 2 rooms for the 5 of us. me, dh and ds in one. DD 21 and DD 18 in the other. Anything I need to know/do without being helicopter-ish? They are right next door to us.
  3. I'm going to get a fitbit. Not a question on that score. FitBit Charge HR. But the bands. I looked this morning, once you get a band you are stuck with that color. It's not like I can get one color and later swap it out for another. Unless there is something I'm missing, it looks like the HR part is integrated into the band. And I looked on-line and someone else's answer to a broken band was that fitbit is really good at replacing them. So plum or black? I don't wear a lot of black. I do wear black, but not all the time like State Girl. State Girl says plum would go with lot of my clothes. Well, this year she is correct. But I wouldn't say that is generally true over lots of years. what say the hive?
  4. They both got a countdown to 18 type thing. State girl got a true count down 18 sets of 18-17-16-.... until down to 1 gift. It was little things pens, pencils, push pins, etc. Things she would need later at college. The 1 was the big gift - a bracelet from Tiffany's. Campbell girl got 18 little things related to symbols - compass so she would know where she was going, duct tape because it fixes everything, yarn because a cord of three strands is not easily broken, etc. Her last gift was a Dooney and Burke purse. They both picked out what that last gift was. I like the second 18 count better and I thought I had it right here but I can't find it now. But I did ask you guys for ideas. Actually I asked you for ideas and then how to pair it down to 18: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/547843-18th-birthday-gift-ready-to-go-but/
  5. http://www.apbrown2.net/web/TranslationComparisonChart.htm I see you already choose, but I went looking and found a chart with reading level, so I wanted to post in case anyone else had a question as well. (below middle of the page) The first Bible study I did as an adult used NIV so that's what I used. I got so used to it. Now I read the ESV daily. There are times I notice the wording as different, sometimes it's better/clearer. Sometimes not.
  6. I put this on the general board but someone asked that I put it on this one as well, for those who don't always go over there... "I just saw this on Facebook. This one doesn't have the nice British accent but it's the same video. But I had to post it here. I mean it's TEA!" The one on the general board is not the one I saw on FB, has one evidently has a bad word. This one does have a British accent so it may be the same one, no bad word. :-)
  7. I just saw this on Facebook. This one doesn't have the nice British accent but it's the same video. But I had to post it here. I mean it's TEA! (Oh, completely kid friendly.)
  8. Forgot to mention... last year when dd was in Germany at this time, I watched her weather a few times. I asked about the grocery stores when snow was forecast. No one cared! There was no run on anything. Bread was plentiful, eggs, milk, snow shovels. No issues after the snow came either. No power outages. Her bigger complaint was once it started to get warm (she was there until June) was there was no air conditioning.
  9. I forget is on has lark feet or inches? We are expecting inches here. I had to go to the store b/c the boy scout camp out was cancelled so I truly do not have enough food to get through the weekend. Bread and milk were both needed items. There was bread, the kind I wanted. Milk, not the kid I wanted, but there was an organic whole milk so I was ok there. Eggs though - I usually buy cage free eggs, then organic. Both were out unless I wanted to spend almost $5 for a doz. So I got plain factory eggs. I figure one dozen isn't going to do any lasting harm. Snow shovels will likely be gone. Propane for camp stoves. Sleds. By tomorrow morning they will all be gone from the stores. I'd say we get 1-3 snows per year. So like someone else said, how many people really need a shovel and a sled every. single. time. The propane I understand.
  10. And I was trying to get to the bottom of the thread because I have a friend who is/was going through a "natural" cancer healing method. And she was doing coffee enemas. Daily. Some of the other stuff made sense. Organic green smoothies - specific ingredients - every morning. LOTS of supplements. Tea in the afternoon. Her doctor's thought process was that if you can get the bad out, your body will heal itself from the cancer. But you have to get all the "bad" out first. Oh, and you end up basically on the Hallelujah diet. I looked at that once and decided there was no possible way I could eat like that.
  11. I just saw a news article that my town is in preliminary talks with Wegman's. It would be close enough that I could actually reasonably shop there, sometimes. Too far to be my all time place to go. But is it really great? I do most of my shopping now at Trader Joe's. And I can go to Publix. Harris Teeter is an old standard.
  12. Can anyone recommend an Etsy shop that sells lotion bars? I recently flew across country and packed in only a carry-on. My quart bag for liquids was FULL! Things I already did - Bars don't need to go in your liquids bag so I made sure it was solid deodorant. Four girls in one hotel room, I didn't think the shampoo and conditioner would last through us all. Face wipes instead of liquid face wash. Toner in the wipes. So I'm trying to reduce my liquid load, should I ever fly again. Hence lotion bars instead of a pump liquid. But I want to try it out now, not wait until I know I'm going and have no time to try different ones. So recommendations - cause if I say lotion bars - there are like 5,000 hits. If I limit it to US, still close to that. Then limit it to my state, still like 3,000 hits. Thanks!
  13. Am I the only one to dd more "fat" to it right away? I clean with water, no soap, dry it and then spray with oil before putting it away.
  14. Yesterday was busy. I had to pick up MIL from rehab and take her home. Any time I have to drive her somewhere ends up a busy day. She moves slow. She talks. A lot. She gets distracted. A lot. Keeping her on task is like keeping a preschooler on task. Yesterday I woke up late - still adjusting to East Coast time after spending New Year's in LA. Quiet time. Breakfast. Start normal daily clean-up stuff. Realize I'm running late and shower. Get to MIL on time and find that nothing is ready to leave rehab except her. Pack her stuff. Wait. Wait. Wait for a nurse to check her out. (I know nurses are busy, but if you want people to check out by 11, why do you have the nurses in a meeting at 10:30?) On the way home, realize she has NO food in her apartment b/c she has been in hospital or rehab for 2 months. Stop at Wendy's to get lunch. Get her in the apartment, bring her stuff in. Eat lunch. Go through all her meds to figure out what she needs and what she already has. Use phone whole time to find out what the generic name for x is. (This takes an hour, really. She has meds all over the place!) Ok, she needs 4 (out of 20!). What groceries do you need. She gets distracted, she hasn't been in her apartment for 2 months and she needs to go see what that thing over there is. And spiders, is that a spider? Finally get a short grocery list from her. Take her Rx to get filled, 2 HOUR wait. (Beginning of year, they have to check on everyone's insurance.) Pick up State girl. Take MIL her groceries. Take State girl to school, help her carry stuff to dorm. Somehow I got the heavy suitcase. Go back to pick up Rx. Still not ready, 15 minutes. Leisurely stroll through Target. Ok, 20 minutes have passed. Nope not ready, 10 more. Find out State girl can't find her phone. Can I go look in the car? Yep, there it is. Let dh know about phone, he will come pick it up and take it to her. Rx finally ready. DH where are you, I'm ready to leave? He is 2 minutes away. He gets phone, I take Rx to MIL. I take Rx there, her CNA is spending the night and there. I get caught up on what has happened this afternoon - MRI is Friday. Appointment with liver doctor in Feb. I finally get home. Thank goodness Campbell girl likes to cook. At some point I asked her to make dinner. Just wait for dh and eat. That is a busy day to me. Woke up at 7:30. Left home at 9:30 and got home for good at 5:15.
  15. Old timer here too. I've got 2 through high school and the youngest is in high school. I feel like every time someone asks and I start to say what we used, I emphasize "This is what I did. This is what worked for *us*."
  16. There is a Robin Hood that my kids watched on Netflix about the same time they watched Merlin. Also British.
  17. She will be fine if she has seen the others! Nothing radically different in the amount of gore, sexual content, profanity as the others. My kids are older so I'm not s sensitive to all that, but I don't remember really any of any of that. There was a "long hug" - comment from someone on screen "hug later, escape now" kind of thing. That was the only sexual thing. Oh, a married person hug. No profanity (ds 15 agrees). A little bit of blood on a storm troopers helmet early and it was there for a few scenes but then I don't even remember any blood later on. Bodies flying up when bombs exploded, but similar to what you see in movies 1-6.
  18. My brother is in an odd relationship. Mom and I can't figure it out. They live in the same house but both have their own bedrooms. She owns the house (the mortgage is in her name), he pays rent. I was talking to my brother this morning and he considers her family. But did admit on the phone this morning that the relationship is "weird". They will never get married. She had 2 awful marriages - both guys were completely different once the vows were spoken. So more than dating, living together but not exactly. I've met her, we staying there for Thanksgiving. But I don't really know her. (She's nice though!) They are late 40's/early 50's. Live out in the boondocks. Have 4 dogs. Have signed up to be a place where the vet can drop off feral cats that have been fixed and gotten a rabies shot. 10 acres. Large garden. She enjoys cooking, but she "plays" with food, not really into cookbooks. (Really good cook! Loved the food while there!) Evidently she was quite surprised last year when mom gave her something for Christmas. So I need to send something small. Brother is hard to buy for as well. He is getting an Amazon gift card. Maybe another Amazon gift card? Other ideas? I don't want her to feel like *she* has to reciprocate. Whatever brother gets us is enough.
  19. Dooney and Burke has purses on sale for that price. Today may be the last day, though. It was supposed to be 12 days of Christmas sale and today is number 14.
  20. She said they did. Full backpacks and all. ETA: she said the t-shirt wasn't that good.
  21. My oldest would want the cats/kittens. My middle would want the dogs. Middle's college has midnight breakfast on the first reading day with a free t-shirt for the first 300 there. She was going to go, until she saw people get in line at 6 pm. For a midnight breakfast.
  22. We have a friend who goes to Lees McRae. And has her dog their. Her roommate has a cat. :-) She even takes her dog to class with her!
  23. We didn't look, but a family we know well "sent" their daughter to Iowa as well for creative writing. I don't remember where else they looked. I know she applied to NCSU, but that was her safety school. (I hate to say that since for so many local kids it is their top choice, but it's not a writing school per se. It's an engineering school.) Oh, and UNC-CH.
  24. I don't foster, but I have a friend/acquaintance who does. Read some of her blog to get her opinions. http://psalm1139mama.blogspot.com/ Oh, but have tissues handy. I always cry when I read her blog. She has such a heart for the kids that come through her house. All four of her children are adopted through foster care. Oh, another thing, she is licensed for medically fragile children.
