  1. I think you mean the Sears Tower. I grew up in Cary. Small little town when I lived there, I wanted out the whole time I was growing up. After living in a multitude of places I realize how wonderful it was. Lots of parks, easy commute to the city, plenty to do in the surrounding suburbs, I walked or biked everywhere. A lot of the dads worked downtown and took the train.
  2. Side effects are not criteria that establish the effectiveness of a medicine. They are drawbacks. A lack of side effects of one of the most meritorious aspects of homeopathy.
  3. In holistic medicine, not everything works for everyone or works the same way. Lavender Oil is supposed to be relaxing, for me it drives me crazy. If you don't have good luck with homeopathy that does not mean it is placebo. Putting arnica gel on bruises and seeing them disappear, my baby calming down after teething tabs, my cats getting along after being given Bach Flower, and my kids noses drying up is not placebo. You can not placebo a bruise or a physical issue away. There are more than 5 homeopathic remedies for morning sickness. It depends on why one is having morning sickness to find the correct remedy. Working at a health food store I saw many pregnant women go through multiple remedies before finding the one that helped. The remedy that worked for my first pregnancy did not work for my second, but did work again for my third. I don't know the science behind homeopathic medicine, I suggest finding a homeopathic practitioner. Someone who can honestly help you and not criticize your chosen form of health care. The thought that in order for medicine to be effective it has to be able to harm is flawed and shows an ignorance of holistic and natural medicine.
  4. It seems that the school policy is that children are allowed to show their beliefs in their schoolwork as it pertains to the assignment. Bringing the Star of Bethlehem and telling what is represents would fall under that category. If the child was older I would think she was trying to push religion but John 3:16 is the first one taught to children and most likely the only one she knew and it is about Jesus as is the Star. I think it was probably very innocent and the teacher overreacted. Yes it does. Whoever doesn't believe in him are non-Christians, whoever doesn't believe in him will perish and not have everlasting life.
  5. If you finished 100EZ which level of AAR did you start with? I look at the samples for Level 1 and I know he is beyond what I am seeing. The placement for Level 2 says he should know different syllable types. 100EZ doesn't cover syllables. Is there review of syllable types in Level 2? Is the coverage of syllable in Level 1 so much that it is a must to do?
  6. I feel the need to speak up because it sounds like the above posters are warning you against what is pretty standard in most martial arts schools. Most schools require a least a year contract. Martial Arts are not a seasonal sport, it is a weekly commitment and most kids will start to whine about going. Mine do and I tell them to get in the car, they always end up enjoying class. Without that contract it is really easy to let your child quit and that isn't giving martial arts a fair shot. Most classes will give a free week of classes and a free first uniform. All additional uniforms are paid for. Sparring gear is purchased also and is changed out as your child grows. My kids are still wearing the same chest guards but have gone through 2 or 3 sets of arm and leg guards and are on their second helmet. They have been in tae kwon do for 5 years. I pay for all testing fees, color belts test every 3-6 months, black belts can go a couple of years between tests. I also pay for tournaments and most are not local, but they are not required. Beware of a school that only allows chosen students to go to tournaments. The most important thing to me in a school is the instructors. I want a master (at least 4th degree) as the main instructor and I look at his accomplishments. The kids first Master was from Korea and had been on the national team. The second school we attended had two masters. One had been on the US Army team and the other had been captain of the Olympic team. The current Master is ninth degree and was part of the Korean national team and had run the TKD program at a state university. We move a lot which is why we have been to 3 schools. I want to make sure there is good humor on the floor along with discipline. I want the instructors to be outgoing with the students, be friendly and have a good personality. I have walked into some schools and walked right back out because I did not care for the demeanor of the instructor. We also make sure the school is a member of World TaeKwonDo Federation. My kids being in TKD is very important to me. I don't have aspirations of the Olympics or national team or anything like that. I want to make sure my kids are in good shape, have the ability to defend themselves, have the confidence to stand up to anyone, have the discipline to follow through with things. TKD provides all of that. You need to decide what is important to you. If this is just something extra-curricula and don't think it will be long term the school you found will probably be fine. If you want something more, look at other schools.
  7. Frontier Girls was started in 2007 as a direct response to the new Girl Scout Program. It is based on what Girl Scouts used to be. While I like the older Girl Scout program more than the new program, Girl Scouts offers many things Frontier Girls and other groups can't: having a council in town, council and service unit events, a national fund raiser, national recognition, networking with other leaders and parents of other scouts, and being part of a very rich history that literally goes back 101 years. We are in our 9th year of Girl Scouts and I am DD's leader. Our troop is what I call "Vintage Girl Scouts"--we work out of the old books and have a focus on the outdoor skills and work on building leadership skills instead of talking about them. DD has had many opportunities because she is in Girl Scouts. She has gone to camp, taken a Program Aid course then worked as an aid in a GS day camp. This year her cookie profits will be banked so she can save for her Girl Scout Destination to London/Paris. She has earned her Bronze Award and is close to finishing her Silver Award. Once she earns her Gold Award she will be eligible for scholarships and be able to join the military at a higher rank. That is all for older girls though. When she was a Daisy and Brownie we did a lot of crafts and nature walks. Our troop is made up entirely of homeschooled girls. We have levels Daisy-Cadettes and when a few girls bridge this year we will add Seniors. The older girls love working with the younger girls and the younger girls love being able to call the older girls friends. We do have siblings at our meetings, the boys line the wall with all their electronics, the littles play with toys, and our 3 and 4 year old girls we call 'Girl Sprouts' and they have their own little activity. The best way to make sure you get what you are looking for is to be the leader. With Girl Scouts you will be trained by someone at council and have access to monthly leader meetings for networking and support. Cookies are what Girl Scouts are most recognized for. That is because they are very popular, Thin Mints are the #2 best selling cookie in the country and they are only available for 6 weeks of the year. Since cookies are the most contact people have with Girl Scouts and don't see all the community service or events we attend, I guess I can see why they would think we are all about cookies. I admit to being a little loopy while writing this because I was up early so I could schedule our cookie booths for this year's upcoming sale, but we are so much more than cookies!
  8. I replied befor reading all the responses. I am glad you are ready to do something about it.
  9. I finished it, it took me a while though. I kept waiting for it to get better, for something to happen. The concept of the whole thing being an experiment was incredibly interesting and so much could have been done with that, but everything that happened seemed random and pointless. I am really irritated that she died. It ruined the entire series and I don't think I will watch the movies.
  10. If I were hiring a babysitter to do this, I would probably offer $120 for the weekend. That is based on if I personally were to go back to work. Paying any more would make it pointless for me to even go to work.
  11. I think it was our best Christmas ever. Hits: DS 11 got a new bow and a tactical backpack for scouts and a Simon game that the whole family has been playing with. DS 6 got his bouncy rider thing, a huge box of K'nex, and a bunch of play-doh They both received iPad minis. DD 13 got the Ugg type boots she wanted and concert tickets to One Direction. There were other presents for all but these were the best. DH got a record player and best of Led Zeplin on vinyl and a floating pool cooler. The only miss was mine. I got a Samsung Galaxy Note 8. It was what I asked for. I have a Galaxy 3 phone and I thought they would sinc, but they don't. I spent all Christmas afternoon messing with the Note and getting frustrated. I went and exchanged it for an iPad mini today.
  12. There is no way to deal with someone unpleasant except for avoidance. Don't go on the visit. Send DH with the kids. That is what I do. I haven't seen my MIL in almost 4 years. I have only talked to her a handful of times on the phone. The only time I really have to deal with her is when she comments on my FB page.
  13. The kids are allowed to get their stocking as soon as they wake up. They are not allowed to wake us up till 8am. Then I cook a big breakfast and we eat before opening gifts. Right now it is 1am and both boys were asleep but are now up and driving me crazy because they will not go back to sleep.
  14. I love Santa and I do everything I can to give the magic of Santa to my kids. I talk about him and tell my kids about presents he brought me when I was little, we follow NORAD every year, set out cookies and milk and them crumble a bit off to leave crumbs. All presents come from Santa, well, except for the very best one. I may love Santa, but I want some credit too. When DD was 5 and in public school another student told her Santa wasn't real. I told her he must have been very naughty the previous year and Santa didn't bring him anything. When it happened the next year I told her that some choose not to believe in Santa and that was OK but they were missing out on a lot of magic. DD is 13 and finally admitted to knowing we give the presents a couple of years ago but she still loves to play along. She loves talking about Santa with 6yo DS. DS11 refuses to NOT believe. He got very upset with all the packages that were being delivered to the house and told me that Santa is supposed to bring everything.
  15. When I get fed up with the kids I stand in that hallway and yell for them to bring me every single electronic they have. Phones, iPods, iPads, remotes to the gaming system, remotes to all TVs, and I order the shut down of the desktops. If I was in your place right now that would be the first thing I would do. Next I would hand them a list of everything that needs to be done. I would tell them that if the house is not clean the tree does not go up. If there is no tree there are no presents. I threatened it one year. My living room was trashed from the kids and it was Christmas Eve. I told all three of them if the living room wasn't clean in 30min I was telling Santa to skip our house. My two older ones no longer believed in Santa but they got busy and my living room was clean and vacuumed in 30min. They weren't willing to risk me being serious. If they hadn't done it, I would have put the gifts out but I would not have allowed the opening of them untill the room was clean.
  16. Herbs, vitamins, essential oils, and homeopathic remedies. Teething Tabs from Hyland are awesome during teething. I can probably count on two hands how many times the kids have had OTC medicine for aches that come with a cold or flu. Natural makes you well faster, OTC just masks the symptoms so you "feel" better. The kids have never had antibiotics (knock on wood). I would take them to the doctor, do antibiotics, or surgery if there was need.
  17. I vote for the Easy Bake Oven. When I was 8 Cabbage Patch Dolls were the "it" toy for Christmas. All I wanted was a Cabbage Patch Doll. I got two dolls that year, neither were a Cabbage Patch. I loved them and played with them but I never got over that they weren't Cabbage Patch. Probably didn't help that my younger brother did get a Cabbage Patch Doll from the aunt who gave me the knock off. Anyway, I never did get a Cabbage Patch Doll and even though I am 37yo whenever I think about it I get really irritated. Why would you give one child the real thing and a fake to the child who really really wants one?! He never even played with it and refused to give it to me, wouldn't even let me play with it. Get her the real thing.
  18. If they aren't asking for things, I would give what I wanted them to have. My kids never asked for anything in the Magic Cabin catalog but they always got things from there. Some were a bust, some were loved. They never asked for silks but got really excited when they got new ones. My boys didn't really ask for anything this year. They are both getting an iPad mini. It is mostly so I can put homeschool books on it but I know they will be a hit. (DD inherited DH's iPad when he decided he wanted a mini not a full size and already has most of her textbooks on it and I love it.) I say get the table. You know it will be hit and be enjoyed, that is all that matters.
  19. I got an early gift over Thanksgiving. DH took the kids to his mother's and I had the house to myself for 6 days. It was wonderful. I never thought it would happen. I would like a maid and a cook for Christmas.
  20. We have an artificial and I like it better that way. No headache, no stuffy nose, no hives, no pine needles still being vacuumed up in May. No one would ever think it is real. There is no trunk, just a green pole. Ours is pre-lit and we have 'realistic' branches in with the artificial. I overload ours with ornaments and once it is decorated it looks absolutely beautiful. Edited to add: One year an ornament was missed when putting the tree away. It was a special one and could never have been replaced. Didn't even realize it never made it to the ornament box till the following year when we put the tree up. If that had happened on a real tree the ornament would have been lost forever.
  21. I don't get why George Clooney gets the attention he does. All I see is George from Facts of Life. I think The Notebook is one of the worst books I have ever read and since reading it I have refused to read anymore Nicholas Sparks books or see any of his movies. Even as a teenager I found Holden Caulfield to be a whiney little brat. I love to read but can't make it through most classics. Morals and values are morals and values, they do not come from religion nor are they tied to any one religion.
