Rhetoric Courses
Samantheia replied to OnceUponAFullMoon's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I don't have knowledge of the courses you mentioned, but my son loved taking Rhetoric at Lukeion with Mrs. Baty. I would describe it as content neutral and effective. -
Hebrew on-line class or tutor
Samantheia replied to Samantheia's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thank you! Ulpan-Or looks great. We did ask around and got this recommendation for dual enrollment: https://www.gratz.edu/academics/hebrew-yiddish We are not looking for dual enrollment right now though. I think a tutor would be a better fit. -

The Class of 2024 College Application Thread
Samantheia replied to JennyD's topic in The College Board
My oldest is applying this year. Homeschooled k-12. He applied to one school with rolling admissions and was accepted, so that's a relief (for me!). They only required his transcript and SAT score. I'm still finishing my docs for the other 6 schools he plans to apply to. Do you include course descriptions for the 12th grade courses as well or just for the completed 9th to 11th grade classes? Thanks! -
Philosophy class for 12th Grader ?
Samantheia posted a topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Any suggestions for an online philosophy class for a 12th grader? It could be a great books class as well if it encompasses more than literature. Thanks! -
School Code for AP exams?
Samantheia replied to Samantheia's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thanks. That's good to know. Yes, he said he was just following instructions the first time, but I think it's possible he's the only homeschooler there. -
School Code for AP exams?
Samantheia replied to Samantheia's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thank you! I hope we can call and have them correct this. -
Hello All, Which school code do your kids use on AP exams? My kid is taking his second exam for this year this morning. When he took the first one he filled in the school code of the local school where he was taking it. Do you use the school code 970000? Thanks!

AP Literature before AP Lang?
Samantheia replied to SanDiegoMom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My son did this. I'm glad to read this because I spoke with a college consultant who left me with the impression that I had done it wrong, i.e. you are not supposed to take Lit before Lang. He took AP Lit last year as a 9th grader. I signed him up for that first because he loves literature. He's an avid reader who wants to be a writer. He is taking AP Lang this year. I think for him AP Lit was actually easier, but he is widely read and had already read many of the books they read in AP Lit at least once. It's hard to say though because we've been dealing with health issues that are making everything harder this year. My impression is that one is not really more difficult than the other. It comes down to if you have a preference for reading and contemplating literature, or non-fiction topics. -
AP Testing: How did it go?
Samantheia replied to SeaConquest's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
DS took two in May at home. They went fine technically, but he felt he made a mistake on the timing. Knowing he could not go back, he went slower than he would usually on the MCQs and then had to rush at the end of the section to finish. So, obviously less ideal than what he would have normally done which is go quickly through the whole section and then go back to the challenging ones. -
Feeling inadequate. SAT practice test cold?
Samantheia replied to cintinative's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
This is exactly my kid too, and he scored highly on the ACT taking it cold as a 7th grader. I was wondering if he should try the SAT now that he's in high school for the "easier math", but maybe it's easier for speed readers to have a higher composite score on the ACT. -
Hits and Misses End of Year
Samantheia replied to theelfqueen's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Hits: Lukeion Rhetoric with Mrs. Baty and PAH APUSH with Mrs. Richman Misses: CTY Honors Biology. He did enjoy the labs, but the bulk of the course consists of videos with a robotic-sounding voice throwing fact after fact at the listener. He ended up using Thinkwell Honors Biology as a supplement. -
Hello, Has anyone had a good experience with an on-line AP World History class? Thanks! Jean
-
Hi Lori, My son has taken basic and now intermediate grammar with Ms. Otto and I think it is a great class. It's a very straightforward and clear presentation of grammar, and the homework is just the right amount to solidify the concepts. He finds the live classes engaging. Lukeion also offers a great class called Barbarian Diagrammarian. It's more condensed than the WTMA classes (covers more in less time). My older son took that class.

Thanks so much for the feedback and suggestions. I'll look into these.

Hi All, I'm looking for an on-line latin class for next year for my rising 6th grader. Does anyone have experience with Latin 1 through WTMA or Schole Academy? I'm a big fan of Lukeoin, but I'm not sure if he's ready for the work load of their classes. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

My 13 yo DS loves to write and is currently writing a novel. If it was up to him, he would spend most of his time reading and writing. If you also have a child that loves to write, which online classes have worked well for your child? I'll take any advice on how to nurture a writer. Also, has anyone used Merlyn's Pen? Thanks!
