  1. Skip the handbook. Cancel Coop. Invite friends you know who honor your requests over for a project day at your home instead. This problem is being discussed in my coop right now and it was an issue in the coop at our old town too. Its a problem you can address, but never truly gets resolved.
  2. This thread will be talked about for years! I wonder who gave her a complex about her color. I want what she's taking for flexibility, meh, the color!
  3. DH & I just had this conversation last night. We do not ground for the one-time issues such as bickering, fighting or lying. By the middle of the grounding, no one can remember why the punishment. We like to get the cause/effect consequences drilled in. Then we can be done and move on. Grounding to change habits, yes. TV watching, computer usage, eventually phones & car driving.
  4. Is there a supply kit that's more complete like Nature's Workshop Plus does for Apologia science curriculums? Ive gotten kind of spoiled this year.
  5. I have a student/daughter like this. I think it was harder for me to adjust my thinking about what I felt was educational success. Reality is my 13 year old daughter is really doing 5th grade work, and not very well. We have taught long division 3 years running now and it's still not sticking. I was really worried. So dh and I decided to enroll her in a virtual charter school.. It's our first year. They know she's behind. But they're not worried. She's still able to say that she's in 7th grade even though she's doing lower grade work. They see progress, very small bit, and they see the regression cycle. So far they say that they will be able to graduate her at the level she's at and not to worry. But we will refocus our efforts in certain subjects from college bound to a vocational path. They tell me that she will be successful in life. Because they can see that she's hard-working and personable. We just have to help her find that thing that makes her happy. When she turns 14 she will be doing a work-education combo to help her get to be a good employee. We're also able to focus on the hobbies she's good at. She loves to sew and make jewelry. Like I said before, this was harder for me to accept. College has always been made a big deal in my family. But so has being an entrepreneur. She still has the ability to do the latter. She's going to be OK in life. School, meh! And that's just fine.
  6. Oh NO! This is awful. Praying for peace & healing.
  7. Are the Olympics only being televised on cable? I've been checking my public channels and nothing! I'm disappointed.
  8. When I was in college...... My folks deposited money monthly into my checking account. Through out college they gave me $80/month. I was supposed to spend it on whatever I needed or wanted. Toiletries, phone bill, movies, pizza, books.... It was expected that I wouldn't ask for more. I paid for my own tuition too, with loans and scholarships. The only time they paid my bills was when I was really really sick and I had a medical bill beyond my student health insurance. Budgeting 101. edited: My folks were out of the country during my college years--in the pre-cell phone & internet. The only way to reach them was by snail mail and that took at least a month or more.
  9. Yes, I knit a few of them for gifts several years back. I find that the lighter colors stain easier and the stains are harder to get out than my store bought ones. I'd make some more, but in darker colors.
  10. My Folks did this when I was 9. The city was Lausanne Switzerland. But it was 1979. They taught me how to use public transportation. And off I went! Only once was there panic, when I got of the train at a different stop and rode the bus home instead of the stop closer to home where they were waiting for me. I didn't know if they'd be there. And I knew there wasn't a bus route near by. :)) Then again in 1988 my folks let me loose in England for three months. I was 15. I had a blast! Now.... would I let my own kids do this. Hmmm. It's 2014. Of course!
  11. Time to organize something else. Hmmm, what will I pick. There's so much to choose from. I really like what I did over the holidays. :)) Onto the next project! What are you going to do?
  12. It's also because students aren't reading lots really good examples of writing.
  13. Secret confession: I hate the flavor of olive oil. And coconut oil doesn't taste good in everything. I know their my options. I use them. But sometimes I just don't eat it, even though I feed it to the family, because I dislike the after-taste.
  14. Interesting Chocolate Rose. I've noticed that fat plays a bigger role when in lowering my bg when I'm running high than even my medications. It goes down faster. But what to do about the cholesterol?
  15. Aldi had Belvita!!! I was surprised and pleased. I bought me some. I got a four-pack hummus. I love the jalapeño hummus with carrots. No pork rinds or veggie chips. But Aldi does carry veggie chips. I almost bought a bag but remember I'm doing the cleanse for 10 more days. No fried food. But watch out! I bought some calmat a olives in olive oil. Yummy. My kids are squeezing the chickens and we have 3 eggs for me tomorrow for snack. Avocados are loaded in the fridge. :)) Salad is available. Almonds abound! I won't starve. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I don't feel that I'm in food hell.
  16. lower than 30/day or carbs -- I'm diabetic. :(( Numbers on last blood test were not good, again. Doctor suggested doing another round of super super low carbs. Last time I did this I lost 30 lbs and kept them off and significantly brought my numbers down. Cholesterol is a problem. I've got to stick with healthy oils or that problem will even more problematic. And to make problems more difficult, I've got to keep things relatively low vitamin K too. I take coumadin (blood thinner) for my artificial heart valve. Crunchy is important. So is dip. I'll buy some pork rinds today and give them a try. I love hummus. I love seaweed. I've found that spicy salsa satisfies without increasing any of my problems. Guacamole is very good, but it doesn't stand alone well. Thank you, keep the suggestions coming. I'm going to torture myself with a cleanse, started today. That gives me a bit of time to figure out what else there's left to eat.
  17. Cheese, evidently raises my cholesterol very quickly Nuts make me fat. Popcorn is a carb…… :( And fixing it air popped is like chewing on cardboard IMO. Fruit is OK in ultra small portions. Chocolate, got me in trouble since my last blood test. :(( I've been drinking a cuppa hot tea ( by the gallons really) because it fits the bill. What I really want is something crunchy to eat along with it that won't mess up my blood sugar or cholesterol. I need a new snack. One that won't make me sick Or make me 10-feet thick! Suggestions? I'm a recovering snack-aholic. Please be gentle.
  18. I'm looking at the links. Thanks. Still confused. I'll start with asking our charter school which definition they're going to use. :))
  19. Yes, that's what I've been thinking. I know how I can BS my way through a presentation……look like a "superstar." The reality is that and "in-depth look" at a subject can be much shallower than anything studied and "memorized" for a presentation. Is this really what PBL is? Is there more to it? I am glad the PS is aware that the lecture style of school isn't the most effective.
  20. It's not what I originally thought it to be. This is a term being knocked around in my virtual charter school and originally I thought hmmmm, we're moving more towards a version of public school unschooling. Arts, crafts, personal research projects and write-up around a subject of interest. Nope! I'm hoping I can understand this better before the deadline for next year's commitment. Thanks!
  21. Only when someone is coming down with something. We apply the oil to the soles of our feet twice a day until better. Usually just 24 hours. I say "coming down with something" because we don't usually know what virus we dodged since it doesn't become full blown illness. The last time I personally used it I was had a headache and I was really tired out. I used oregano oil twice in one day because I knew I was coming down with "something." I woke up the next morning fine and I'd forgotten about the yucky previous day until DH started complaining about a headache and that he was soooo tired. He used the oil too and by the end of the day he was fine again. My oldest daughter used it after she came down with the flu. She had a bad case of it for a weekend. I started the oils on her the 2nd day -- can't believe I forgot to use it right away!-- She was fine by the end of the 3rd day. I see she uses it when she's sneezy or headachy. She's 14. I just bought another bottle from young living. :)) And a bottle of their Thieves oil that I fog here daily. So far only one case of the flu for this family of seven. My mom uses thieves too when she gets a cold because if my dad gets the cold it always turns into pneumonia. Fogging with thieves kept him healthy the last time she got sick.
  22. Can you offer a homeschool ballet class for younger girls. One of the homeschool mom's locally had her daughter do this. It's moved beyond ballet now into jazz and even an art class. They charge a reasonable fee and the moms love it! Smaller classes and more attention is given.
  23. No, you did the right thing. Everyone feels terrible about a life lost. But it's nice to know that the family doesn't blame them.
