  1. I am the only one who can open the dishwasher to see if it’s clean or dirty. My kids are apparently incapable. The can bring the dishes over to the counter but not open the door. My husband travels a lot I told him that if I die in my sleep while he’s away the kids may not notice until they run out of dishes. 😂😂
  2. She chose to take the class there’s no way this is the only option. My kids have loads of choices at their colleges to meet humanity requirements. If this is her attitude at the beginning of the class and assuming she’s being as disruptive as described in the op she’s doing a disservice to the rest of the students in the class who are there to exchange ideas and learn from the professor and other students. Going in stating that white males are the most discriminated against group in the US is silly. If she has actual points based on what they are reading and can make them thoughtfully great if she just wants to spout off her unfounded opinions she’s wasting everyone’s time.
  3. I think you’re comparing apples and oranges. If I’m just looking for books to suggest yes I think of what interests my son or daughters. If I’m designing a lit class for my child for the year I’m choosing commonly covered classics which inevitably leans towards male authors. That’s what Garga driving at.
  4. Do you think the phone and computer are the real issue or just the symptom? With what you described I would consider counseling for your dd. Sometimes they just can’t open up to their parents and need someone else. Also for us school’s not optional here so if someone doesn’t want to homeschool it’s time for brick and mortar school. Edit to add - i just saw your update. Hope you find a solution soon.
  5. Even if the teen has a track record of deceit becoming more and more restrictive is only going to push the teen to find more ways to deceive. You need to address the heart issue which can only be addressed with open conversation.
  6. But if that’s the concern then there should be no phone at anytime. Any of those things can happen during the day at home or accessing free WiFi at the library McDonald’s etc. You have to transition from treating her like a young child to helping her navigate the world as an adult.
  7. After you deal with the cell phone I’d ask myself why does she feel the need to sneak around me? We don’t have rules regarding cell phones in room so I’m not sure your motivation there but at 14 contact with friends and privacy becomes very important. I wouldn’t want to set up an environment where sneaking around like that becomes the solution vs talking to dad or me about more adult privileges.
  8. That’s what we have for our college student when they’re home for breaks. It’s pretty good and nice to be off the floor if it’s an extended visit.
  9. Just to add to what’s here middle school is a great time to really delve into an academic interest through competition. My kids really benefited from participating in Math Counts and Science Olympiad. It really stretched them academically. The are similar events for history etc.
  10. Definitely. So far 3 of the examples of people who don’t need higher wages are jobs primarily done by women house cleaner, preschool teacher and ballet instructors. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
  11. Do you think the requirement to have a 2 or 4 year degree stems from the fact that basically showing up is enough to graduate high school? You won’t be college or career ready but you have the diploma. If you have a 2 or 4 year degree you show that you can at least complete something that’s not a given.
  12. Same here you need at least an associates degree to teach or assist in pre school.
  13. One of the things I like about the movie version of Les Mis is Russell Crowe’s terrible singing. It reminds me of my terrible singing and makes singing along to One More Day as I run so much more enjoyable 😂😂
  14. I watched it recently too and was unimpressed. I was surprised given all the hype. I had recently watched the movie version of Les Mis which I love. I’m a huge Hugh Jackman fan.
  15. I’d say 25-30% of high schoolers work here based on my kids friends and my experience out and about. Lots of fast food and supermarket jobs etc. In the summer there are lots of lifeguard ice cream store tourist spot jobs.
  16. The y has barbells dumbbells weight bench squat rack and a range of machines
  17. The book is for me to strength train not my son
  18. I’ve been taking body pump at the y for the past 9 months. It’s a great class but I don’t think the time is going to work with my son starting cross country this summer so I’m looking for alternatives.
  19. Can anyone recommend a strength training book for women? Preferably something using free weights. Thanks
  20. My last homeschooler is headed to high school this September so I’m looking to the future. I haven’t worked for pay since my 24 yo was born so my engineering degree is pretty useless. I have a dd in elementary school so I still need to be around to pick up from school in the afternoon plus summers etc. Which has led me to think of starting a craft business. I’m leaning towards baby items quilts, knit or crochet blankets sweaters etc. some pre made as well as custom work. I was thinking of selling on Etsy, local craft fairs and approaching a couple of local baby/children boutiques in the area. Has anyone else ever gone this route? Any tips for getting started regrets etc? thanks
