  1. If Saxon is working for you then I would stick with it. My 8th grader is doing Algebra 1 this year and we will do Algebra 2 in 9th grade. I have used a lot of supplements and by far love the Art Reed teaching discs. I am not math minded and my son has done very well with Mr. Reed :)
  2. I'm not sure I understand what you're asking- are you wanting to keep a portfolio so you can send your kids to public school in 9th grade?
  3. I've dug through old posts and read what has been posted on the Home2Teach writing courses, but I was hoping to hear some more recent experiences. Thanks :) (I posted this on the Logic board but wasn't getting a response. Hoping it will do better over here)

  5. Art Reed. He does a wonderful job of explaining things and gives the kids tips that aren't in the book. We have been very happy with him :)
  6. What about Home 2 Teach? I have been looking into that one recently.
  7. That's what I do as well! Dishes, cleaning, yard work, laundry... it benefits me and teaches him a lesson :)
  8. :iagree: We also skip their writing lessons and use WriteShop. :)
  9. I believe that Hake 5 starts out with the very basics and then adds on with constant review. I've never used FLL but we are using Hake and love it. My son had a very shaky grammar background and we started in Hake 7 and he has done really well.
  10. Do you have a co-op close by that you could join? This could be a great compromise for you guys.
  11. We love Art Reed. DS takes about an hour per lesson, sometimes and hour and a half. I would suggest breaking up the lesson. Once my ds hits the hour mark I want him to move on to something else for awhile to rest his brain :tongue_smilie: .
  12. DS13 is about 1/2 way through Saxon 1/2. We use Art Reed dvds (we used DIVE in the previous years).
  13. We try to stick to the "yellow sticker" meats. At Walmart they slap a yellow sticker on meat that has to be sold. Probably 80% of the meat in our freezer is clearance meat. We even get some nice steaks sometimes at GREAT prices.
  14. Red Wagon Tutorials is another one. http://www.redwagontutorials.com/
  15. A friend of mine has the Saxon 5/4 and wants to use it this year. It is the hard back edition and says 7th printing inside. There is nothing that says what edition. (actually, in black marker on the inside cover is written "1997 edition") Is this the book made for the public schools? Will she have any problems using this in her homeschool? The only difference I noticed was there wasn't the mental math part in the beginning, and I didn't see any investigations. Is this the only difference? She doesn't have any work pages yet; just the student and teacher books. ex: times math facts, tests, investigation worksheets. Thanks!
  16. When we did the lower Saxon we have workbook pages for the timed tests, investigations, & tests. We also had a mental math section & word problem at the top which these books don't have.

  18. I've always had ds redo all missed problem in mixed practice until this week... I spoke with Art Reed on the phone because I'm having the same problem as you (we use his dvd lessons). He told me I was burning my son out on math. He said to check & make sure he was doing the mixed practice, but NOT to grade it. As long as he is getting 80% or above on his tests we are fine. He said I'm to grade the test with no partial credit. If he misses anything due to a careless error- mark it wrong. No leniency. If he gets less than 80% on two tests in a row then we need to back up and redo some lessons. We're going to give it a shot. Ds was VERY happy and he seems to be working more carefully already. He's even asking for the solutions book to check a few of his mixed practice on his own. Here is the newsletter article where he talks about this. Scroll down to The Student is Required to Re-do Math Problems from Yesterday’s Lesson.
  19. I love her site! But I'm looking for some completed lab report examples and what grade level they are from.
