  1. Not for lack of trying...I think I could swing that. Can I add brownies, though? ETA: This was just me poking fun at myself for having a sweet tooth. I pretty much lived off of candy and pop as a kid because my Mom is also a sweet tooth and I was super skinny. Oh, the good ole days. Now I look shifty eyed at a bakery and I balloon up.
  2. Well, depends on the 9 year old, but I'd say probably not. I think it's generally classified as YA, though, so just buying it would probably alert them it's not juvenile fiction. Actually there was a recent thread where we discussed the importance of reading books for your kids first after some unexpectedly horrifying finds! :cursing:
  3. Definitely for little kids. I still consider teens kids. It's not much we haven't seen in many other kids books, though, so I guess I didn't blink an eye.
  4. I have found some units online from high schools with listings of their plans for CSI type classes. Also, this link has some. https://www.teachengineering.org/whyk12engr.php
  5. I'm not sure I'd say that's one I'd pick for someone who isn't a big Gaiman fan. They're great short stories, but they're very Gaiman-esque! I'm listening to the audio of it and it's good (plus his amazing voice). What else have you read of his? I'm reading Those Who Are Left and I'm iffy about it, too. It's just kind of odd. I don't want to give spoilers but it all reads kind of like "Really, no questions or emotions with this apocalyptic situation???"
  6. It's just makeup, so I wouldn't be worried about "demonic" things, personally. It's really fun to make theatre makeup! :) I think the Alien Think anatomy drawing course, some forensic science, chemistry (for chemical composition of creating prosthetics) and art would make for a fun year.
  7. That's awesome! I love that he's such a great supporter of small bookstores. He's been known to sign and leave some in airports, too. I disagree. I'd say for older kids, however he is outspoken against too much (or any) censorship of books for children. There is nothing too obscene in the book, though a reference to seeing their father cheat. It didn't bother me enough to prevent me from giving my daughter a signed copy for her birthday. :)
  8. But she is. She's singling out a particular group to punish everyone for the law changing. It's like when a teacher punishes a class for something one student does that isn't even bad. She's abusing her authority to punish everyone because of her hatred of a single group. She sure didn't do this before marriage legalization which means she's not totally opposed to marriage (hence her four marriages) but to gay marriage.
  9. I finished The Reapers Are the Angels. I'm rather shocked I found out about it on a YA list. Nope. No way. Very graphic. And the ending? Hmmm. I don't think I'll recommend this one, or maybe I'm forgetting something? I never used to like horror/thrillers but then a couple years ago they really started hitting the spot. They stress some people out, but for me it's like "Huh, I guess my life doesn't suck so bad after all. At least I know this won't happen to me." But then again I'm usually picky about choosing ones I know don't end entirely terribly. I can't handle things with infant loss, sexual violence, or pet deaths, though. I try to weed those out early before I spend a night without sleeping.
  10. Sometimes you just have to let it go. It's hard. I only work really hard if it's family or someone that's been in my life for a very long time and I can't live without. But if the hurt is that bad, it's for the best that the relationship be over.
  11. It's much milder than Coraline and Graveyard Book. :)
  12. That is awful. It is completely unacceptable that their grade be dependent on their BMI, at the very least! I'd go talk to the Principal and Superintendent!
  13. I had a very embarrassing problem with flooding and dysmennorhea as a teen. So much so that I required one major abdominal surgery and two minor surgeries. I would have to change a couple times a day sometimes. I do not blame that girl for going home. It's traumatizing enough when it's happening. :( Same here, but that's the new recommendations as far as I can tell. It's what my kids get now.
  14. I hate Hulu, though. :( WHY in the world would I pay to watch commercials?
  15. What do you mean by that? I never have seen that. He's an outspoken advocate for womens rights, refugee rights, and he's married to Amanda Palmer, so I would say more awed and respectful than fearful!
  16. I love love love love Neil Gaiman! His voice, oh my. Just listen to his voice. I read his works over and over again, and so do my kids (age appropriate ones, at least). And yes I preordered the box set. :) If you live graphic novels and comics, The Sandman and Death are definitely must-reads, as well. He's written several Doctor Who episodes and Marvel 1602 (comic), as well.
  17. I've always bought Keens because they *weren't* narrow. I have very wide feet with very high arches. A pair of Keen mary janes are a bit tight on me only because my arch is so high that it tightens at the top and cuts in. My feet are very hard to fit with very wide forefoot, narrow heel, and high arch and Keens and Adidas are literally about the only shoes I've ever found that fit me decently.
  18. Ok, I'll share my deals. $57 if you pick the right colors/sizes. This is like the holy grail of awesome boots. Keens http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HG9P31E?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00 Patagonia http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HQJSKNW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
  19. Pancakes, muffins, berry crumbles/cobblers/crisps, thawed for use on ice cream, cake, oatmeal...
  20. Free from Christianity or nothing against Christianity? Because I've never seen the latter. As for being scary, all of his books are silly and a little creepy. I've never had a problem with any of his works, so I'm not sure what I should be warning you about.
  21. My son (13) won't eat anything creamy like cream cheese, but he will put away anything else. He will ask me to pick up kippers, collard greens, brussel sprouts, scallops, anything. Meanwhile my two young kids won't even eat a slice of pizza. :confused1:
  22. I used to think that. Then after ear surgery, I lost part of my sense of taste. Everything tastes of aspirin. What this has instead translated to is me putting more salt and flavors into my food to try to get some taste out of it. This is usually worse during allergy season when everything is all inflamed. One reason I really think my thyroid is screwed up again is because this *doesn't* work for me. Last year to this spring I had some rather bad IBS issues and I've had a recurring ulcer. I did not feel like eating 90% of the time. In fact the very thought fills me with dread. But I'd force myself to eat something because the gnawing empty stomach feeling somehow was worse. While most people lose weight with ulcers and IBS, I actually gained and can't get it to go away. I would sit there and cry from pain and frustration while I ate less than 1000 calories a day (tracked when it was bad so I could see how much I'd have to force myself to eat more to be alive).
  23. I understand. I'm just burned after a Craigslist rental scam and now we have nowhere to live. :/
