  1. We use Seton Home Study School, which is an accredited Catholic homeschool program. Prices are MUCH cheaper than Laurel Springs!! This of course depends on your religious beliefs...
  2. We went to my daughter's kidney doctor today... He asked if we started back at school yet. Ummm... I've seen you every other week for 45 minutes since March... When I told you that we were homeschooling... THROUGH THE SUMMER... If you can't remember that small detail, I'm a little worried about your taking care of my daughter's HEALTH!! Or when they ask why she's out during the day... My daughter replies "I've already got my school work done... no need to waste the day sitting around!"
  3. :iagree: We are Roman Catholic. I didn't think that fell under Christian.
  4. I figured out what OPGTR was, but what is MEP??? I already purchased a workbook for him (that is SO huge), but he's already been working on that since February... So I'll be buying some more. I'm actually thinking about printing out some printables, putting them in sheet protectors (and dividing them by subject with page dividers) so that he can use dry-erase markers or the new dry-erase crayons and REUSE them over and over again! Especially the letter ones... Save some trees, ink and my sanity!!!
  5. You read that COMPLETELY correct... I'd prefer to have him home with his sister and me, but DH is pushing for him to go to school. Although he's not pushing REALLY hard or he'd be in VPK... He needed his vaccinations (and the letter of refusal for his MMR from the ped)... And it was DH's responsibility... so, OH WELL!!! :tongue_smilie:
  6. My 4 1/2 year old son is eligible for VPK (Voluntary Pre Kindergarten) here in Florida. We plan on homeschooling him because the programs here are difficult to get into and I am already homeschooling my 11 year old daughter. I can't afford to purchase a lot of curriculum (finances are tight and we already have to pay for our daughter's curriculum). What kind of sites would you recommend for his age group?? What inexpensive books would you recommend?? Anything that can be borrowed from the library or purchased from a used book store?? He already knows his letters, numbers, colors, shapes, etc. He also knows about half (if not more) of the Dolch sight words list (thanks to "Meet the Sight Words" DVD's). I appreciate any help in this since it's going to be my first time starting from scratch and building my own curriculum. We plan on him attending Kindergarten in public school... my husband's choice, not completely mine... but it's for a year to see how it works for him and then we'll make the decision whether to homeschool him as well or keep him in public school... Thanks in advance to everyone!! I'm kinda scared to start out brand new!! :001_huh: -Tara
  7. Not a problem, Cathy!! I will probably say that if there is a delay it is more pronounced on the display models. I've never had a problem with my Kindle... and I know what you are saying about visual disturbances. I notice flickering lights, etc. and just don't have a problem with the Kindle. I will tell you that most ereaders use the same e-ink technology as the Kindle. The iPad and the nook color do not use this technology. BUT... they are back lit. That seems to bother me while I'm reading. It can also effect your sleep pattern if you are reading later at night. I get a headache after reading on my iPad, while I don't for the Kindle. I hope this helps!! Sorry I can't tell you a distinct answer. God Bless, Tara
  8. :iagree: My DH is Law Enforcement as well... They very rarely get a "good" call. Some guys have a bad day, some just have a lot of stress... It's not an easy job to do and they do it because they love it, not for a power trip or for the money. I'm sorry that you had this horrible encounter. Local agencies here don't have you fill out your own traffic incident report. That's not what you are for... you are the victim. I know that it doesn't take away the stress that you are going through, but please don't see them all as this way. They are truthfully out there to help you. Unfortunately, this officer or the department he works for doesn't work that way. Maybe you should consider talking to the department to find out if this is SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for traffic accidents or if this was a mistake on the officers part. Maybe that might help you understand or if it was a mistake, then it may not happen to someone else.
  9. I suffer from migraines (and have for quite a while). I am also a Kindle owner. I do know that the one that they have out on display is NOT a "real" Kindle. It's one that is made specifically for display only (one that you couldn't sell later and turn into a regular Kindle). I have NEVER had that problem with my Kindle. I don't get that "flash" you are referring to. I think that may be specific to the DISPLAY model. I know that I see that flash on display models for the Kindle, Nook, etc. But I've seen them in "real life" and never saw that happen. Hope this helps.
  10. I can't afford $80-$120 for the discs. I was BLESSED to have a family LEND me their cd's so that I didn't have to purchase them. But times have become more difficult financially recently and I can't even purchase the discs, let alone purchase the text book for an additional $35. I was hoping to find another math program for her to use that is a bit less expensive but works well with her dyscalculia. I know that is what is causing her the difficulty right now. She is just not GRASPING the information that we are teaching her. This is the first time (and she's on lesson 104 out of 119) that we have had a problem. Someone recommended Math U See, but she doesn't learn well visually... I was thinking Life of Fred, but I've been unable to find anyone with the LOF Apples, Butterflies, Cats and Dogs books. I'm going to have her sit down and watch some of the Khan Academy stuff, but right now, she's in tears not being able to process this. And my husband and I are just a wreck because we don't want her to HATE math... but we are getting so stressed trying to teach her...
  11. We are currently using TT4 that we had borrowed from another family. I purchased the book on my own. It has worked wonders for my daughter and her dyscalculia (until recently -near the end- where she is trying to learn long division). I don't have the finances to purchase TT5... But it really seems to work for her. Does anyone have a recommendation of another curriculum that would be cheaper that might work for her??? Just going through a really stressful time (with family health problems, finances, and education)... I'd appreciate any help. Thanks so much! Tara :banghead:
  12. My daughter is 10yo and in 4th grade. She hasn't learned cursive yet. She has been diagnosed with dysgraphia. We tried a regular cursive handwriting book (through our curriculum provider, Seton), but I have seen that everything seems to just look like a curvy line. No emphasis on letters at all. I have erased NUMEROUS pages from an old Handwriting without Tears book, but she is still having problems. Can anyone give me some recommendations for other handwriting programs that may help her?? I'm just at a loss right now and I don't want to get frustrated with her over it, but we *as a family* believe that learning cursive is VERY important. Any suggestions?? PLEASE!!!:confused::confused:
  13. I'm actually looking for a copy of TT4... Man, are these things hard to find!!! Some people have them, but aren't ready to part with them yet. I need a copy within a couple of weeks. My daughter really enjoyed the trial and since she has learning difficulties (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia), it was recommended that she try TT. She keeps wanting to play the trial lessons, but I know if I do that, she'll be bored when she gets to them during the school year!!! I have heard so good things... and my daughter HATES math and absolutely LOVES this program!!
