All about spelling taught my 6 year old to read. I love that program.

I'm really thinking about Sonlight Core A for my 7 yo ( with 4/5 yo listening) But Im seeing that LA is included. I already have FLL and WWE (which we started both this year and ended up dropping both b/c he couldnt read and hated writing. Decided we'd pick it up next year. Could I do SL by getting books myself and just ordering the TM and do my own LA?? Anyone else do this? This year we did NOT do enough reading. DS finally learned to read (but still dislikes Doing it) and I found myself not doing enough read alouds. Which brought me to Sonlight.

I have this same worry for my kids, and I think all of us do at some point as we begin this journey. My argument to my husband as he brought up these fears when we were deciding to HS, is that both of us were in PS. We only KNOW PS, we feel like they may be missing out on all the "socialization" things, recess, lunch, lines, bubbly teachers. But if WE had been Hs'ed and were deciding to put our kids in PS...we'd be worried about them missing out on that sibling bond, museum field trips, child led learning, etc. The grass always seems greener. For DH and I, it's just a matter of HS being unfamiliar to US, Ds knows no different.

Oh do I feel the same way, I will go read your blog next! We pulled DS out last Feb but we took a very slow approach until April and then we moved, moved again, then had a baby and we will be starting "1st grade" on monday. With all the "back to school" fun, and sales, and facebook posts, I can't help but get caught up in the wonder, am I doing the right thing for him? Is he missing out on the social stuff, and the "thrill" of back to school, the classroom and new teach and new friends, cafeteria. When I look at my list of things he's missing it seems so silly. Cafeteria, really?!? LOL but really. I do wonder. I think for me a lot of it is what I'm "used" to. If I had been homeschooled and got to do family field trips, museum days, art projects daily, cooking lessons, play with my siblings and grow a great family bond, I'd probably be worried about sending him to school, concerned about all the things he might be "missing out on". Does that make sense to anyone else?? So yes, you are not alone. The reality really sets in at this time of year. Just focus on WHY you are doing it, and what brought you here to begin with.

I'm sitting here trying to plan/file/workbox our school year, and I have AAS open and reading through preparing the materials... It seems like it would be a silly question, but do you move on to Step 2 even if DC hasn't mastered ALL of the phonograms? Or do you wait? I notice on step two it says to review the cards that are in the "review" section so this leads me to think you go ahead and move to step 2 even if they aren't all mastered. So in theory, we could do evaluation on day 1 and then move on to step 2 on day 2? How long does it typically take a 6 yo to get through level 1, I'm thinking it will be done in a few months, shouldn't take all year right?!?

I'm thinking about trying out the netflix and I know there are many programs for "school". I have a rising 1st grader and a preschooler. Is it worth the $$? I really WANT to do this, so enable me ;)

I can't figure that out either?! I see the only way you can pay is with visa, master card, american express or discover. And they give you a "voucher" to redeem at Little passports website, so I think as long as Little passsports can ship to you, you should be able to. I did post a question on the comments board though, we'll see what they say.

From the looks of it, and by looking at Nance's review, I would think it could be shared, obviously they'd only get one "kit" but it seems like the activities, origami and such could easily be done with two children!!!

Thanks for posting this! I have been using OPGTR and ETC but DS is HATING me when I pull out OPGTR, so Ive been using it as a teachers manual and trying to use other things to teach the lesson. This website is great for more resources!

I pulled my Ds out at Valentines day this year (Kindy) and there are moments, like now, 6 months pregnant, moving out of our first home into my moms temporarily while we WAIT for our new house to be ready....that I think to myself, WHAT AM I DOING??!?!?!?!? He is starting to miss his friends and I freak out thinking I am ruining him by taking that away from him. I wont lie, Ive even thought about just putting him in school for first grade. BUT then I sit down and think about WHY I am doing this. Why it was so important for us to pull him out. And I know, know, know...that this is Gods plan for us, and that I CAN handle it with His help, and He will provide and lead the way. I could throw him back to Public school, but that would be taking the "easy" route and giving up on both of us...AND God. In my opinion. Totally not saying that everyone that does go back to school is turning on God, but that in my case right now, I know this is His plan for us. Even if it isn't "easy" right now. Coming to this board and visiting other homeschool blogs helps me to stay excited about it. Those cold feet are normal (i hope ;))

I was JUST thinking about this very thing this morning during OPGTR lesson 44 with my 5 yo. He is reading the lessons very well, but I was worried that (with all his whining about DOING the lesson) that if I pulled a book out, he'd freak out. I have no advice, just wanted you to know you aren't alone, and thanks for posting this, so now I know I should really start to introduce him to reading some early readers NOW, so he isn't afraid of books.
