  1. The NBJ are great for certain kinds of homeschoolers - not so much for other kinds of homeschoolers. You will have to determine whether they are a fit for you. Don't feel like you have to do every page in the journal and if your children don't enjoy the journals, don't do them. Elementary science is about promoting joy in learning and discovery. Don't make it a drudgery. Some kids love, love, love the journals. Others don't. Do your kids like to do worksheets and write or cut and paste? If not, don't get them. Make sure science is fun so they'll love science for a lifetime.
  2. We are going this Thursday for an evaluation and possibly a prescription of dh allows. Ds is 13 and definitely wants to try meds as his elder cousin has seen dramatic results since beginning them. As a homeschooler...what has changed for you since beginning meds?
  3. Thanks so much. This is a great response...one question that will help make your post readable to me - what is TT?
  4. I am looking at their American History course for my 3rd grader (next year). It looks good, but I want to be prepared for all the problems that may occur with using it. How does it compare to Sonlight? Thanks!
  5. How about a Desert Dessert? I'm not sure how you would do it, but I bet they would never forget it.
  6. Two days into it.... I thought we would do review of math before Pre Algebra with the Key's To series, but son is way too advanced...so I switched to Thinkwell Pre Algebra. Other than that, we need to add more reading. They are finishing school before noon in sixth grade!
  7. I have successfully taught three children to punctuate and write well. In fact, one will be starting college at sixteen. She edits my writing. However, I used all the same materials with this child to no avail. He continues to put commas where there should be periods. He leaves out commas when they are needed. He just doesn't get it. He doesn't "hear" the end of the sentence. We've used Shurley Grammar, Daily Grams, Winston Grammar, Easy Grammar, Rod and Staff and every little workbook in between. Now I'm just having him write paragraphs, which I correct. His little brother writes perfectly. HELP! Does anyone have this problem? My fourteen year old says that her friends from public school write this way - no periods, just a few commas in long lengthy prose. How can I help this child? Any ideas?

  9. I talked to someone at a hs conference that absolutely loved Aleks. Would love to hear from everyone using it... Did it teach well? Is it easy to access their reports? What did your student think of it? Any comments would be appreciated.
  10. I don't see how they could get any more detail than Apologia Astronomy, it's very detailed. It sounds like you mean, they need less detail and more hands on and more experiments. For certain, get some experiment books and get more hands on with those little guys. Your kids look tiny - they may not be ready to learn science in-depth, but just need to have fun with experiments. Try Apologia when they are older. As homeschoolers, we often try to push things too early. They have a lot of years to learn science. Just have fun!
  11. I'm buying books for History and I'm trying to determine which is the best version of these two books to get. I want them for my son who is not a great reader - reading about the fifth grade level. But it needs to be interesting, with lots of suspense and as little detail/descriptive language as possible.
