  1. We do Latin as a language study. I feel they are getting much more out of learning it this way than just roots. I have the root books too. Honestly just learning words is boring. My kids love to give me a sentence in Latin. I give them nouns, verbs, adjectives and prepositions, just like we do in Shurley Grammar. I think by learning just root words the children miss out on so much. Also by learning LAtin then taking any of the Romance languages later they will find it so much easier. In fact with Latin they can go to the post office, or anywhere and "read" the Spanish, try it. My kids love to decipher all the Spanish and they havent' had any yet. But this is coming from someone who took years of languages in high school and college. I am pretty biased.
  2. My daughter just finished Prentice Hall Pre Algebra. It was an actual textbook from the school my son brought home years ago. It was very thorough. It has online websites to go to for more help and tests, extra help pages per chapter, reviews, cummulative reviews, even quizzes. My dd is not a math minded person and did very well. WE did all the odd problems, those answers are in the book. It did take us a long time to do 13 chapters but we did every odd problem. I want her to have a solid math backround. SO we went slow and steady.
  3. I think I have decided on Lial's Beginning Algebra. Do I need to get the student solutions manual? Has anyone used this curriculum? I read a lot of reviews and Foerster's. Lials, and Jacob's are all highly recommended. I can get Lial's for $5 on Amazon. We will then do Kinetic Algebra starting next year, maybe a little review in the beginning but that's OK. She isn't terribly mathstrong.
  4. We use The Latin Road to English Grammar. MIne are in 7th and 4th grade. It is a little challenging for the 4th grader but he is doing it and learning. My 7th grader loves it.
  5. I guess I posted this in the wrong forum and this is where the middle school moms are, I hope. My daughter has finished her PreAlgebra book. So now I need an Algebra curriculum. Is Kinetic Algebra worth it? Does it teach the math or just give fun problem bits with a cool animation? Has anyone found it too easy, too hard, not enough meat? I was using Scott Foresman Pre Algebra, it is very similar to how I learned math in ps. So I am comfortable with it. Are there any other good Algebra programs out there? I intend to have my dd take the Agebra 1 test next spring (May 2012) with the ps kids. She will be going into the ps high school after next year. I am not a fan of Saxon. I use Singapore for my 4th grader. But do not like the NEM. I want my dd to be very ready for Geometry and Alg 11 in high school. Thank you so very much. PS. In the K-8 forum I have been recommended Jacobs, Foerster and another one on top of Kinetic. If anyone has a review on these that would be great. And I guess my job now is to look them up.
  6. Thank you moms. I have heard of Jacob's. I will dig deeper. I was actually told not to put her in Algebra because she was too young. If I go slow she will still be in it most of next year anyway. And Algebra is being taught to 7th graders all over the place. Anyway she's ready so that's all that counts.
