  1. Pottasium iodine tablets in my home. I've had them for a couple of years- just in case. I'm not going to use them for an event that is happening in Japan.
  2. :iagree: I pulled my 2nd grader out of PS 5 weeks before the end of school last year. Initially, I tried to implement everything I thought she needed. What she really needed was some time to relax and decompress.
  3. http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/ She used her crockpot daily for a year. I like that she posts what she thought of the recipes. I like the bacon cheese chicken and the sweet and spicy salmon. They are family favorites.
  4. Our family lost 2 dogs over the past 2 years. Both dogs died of old age. It's like losing a family member and I still miss them. I missed the presence of a dog, too. Also, I knew we had love and care to offer a dog that needed a home. We've recently adopted 2 dogs from our state prison program. We couldn't be more pleased. They are so well trained (tricks, obedience, house trained, etc) and both seem so appreciative of the home we have given them. Both dogs were strays and came from shelters. The prisoners had the dogs living with them in the cells. One of our dogs was in prison for 4 months and the other for 6 months. We skipped the puppy stage and I'm happy we did. I don't know if you are "stuck" on the collie breed. It does look like your state has a prison program. www.hopedogs.org
  5. school homeschool program. They attend the program 7 hours/week and have about 2 hours of homework/week. It provides for many of the "specials". They have gym, music, art, Shurley Grammar, writing, Spanish, and a little bit of Latin. I'm having to supplement the Grammar a bit and the Latin hasn't been enough, so I'll be using my own full curriculum next year. Overall, I've been happy with the program. Their teacher is a former homeschooling Mom, so she understands how our family functions. My kids were in public school for 2 and 3 years and this is our first year homeschooling. I think the 1 day a week in a classroom setting has helped ease the adjustment into homeschooling. They have made a few friends, get to have recess, celebrate holidays, and have a little of the classroom structure they were so used to in public school. I sat in on a class before I made the decision to sign my kids up. I noticed that the time wasting issue wasn't as much of a problem as it was in full time school. Also, I talked to the director (another former homeschooling Mom). I knew that I could pull my kids if I didn't feel it was a good fit for them. Good luck with your decision.
  6. My b/g twins are 9 and their brother is less than 13 months younger. I've moved my younger son up a grade in most subjects. They have the same science, history, geography, spelling, handwriting, and literature (they all read at the same level). All 3 kids are at different points in math, so I work with each of them on those lessons. Also, we use Wordly Wise and my twins are in the 3rd grade book and my younger ds is working on the 2nd grade book. My twins don't seem to mind having their brother work at the same level for most of the subjects. They've all done well.
  7. I pulled my 2nd grade dd from ps in the middle of the year. I was so nervous and cried when I took her out of class. It was a major decision and it caused stress. It turned out really well, though, and I'm so happy that I wasn't afraid to make the change. I hope you have a wonderful time and the transition is smooth for everyone.
  8. in Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak is great. You could take the Cog to the top. If you decide to stay in CO Springs for an extra day, I'd recommend Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Also, the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center (in Woodland Park) might be a fun trip for your dinosaur fan.
  9. I have no doubt there are better things out there, but this was a good place for me to start for our first year. I don't follow the curriculm/lesson plans exactly and didn't purchase the map study. History has been our favorite subject this year. My kids have really enjoyed the textbook and their retention of the material has been great. I supplement the material with various chapter books (Farmer Boy, Caddie Woodlawn, Johnny Tremain, Who was Daniel Boone, The Matchlock Gun, and others).
  10. I had twins. Less than 13 months later, I had another baby. My advice is to be kind to yourself. If you don't make it out of your pajamas some days, it's ok. If people ask if you need anything, ask them to make your family a meal. Don't turn down any offers of help. That was a hard thing for me. Ds- 9 Dd- 9 Ds- 8
  11. I live in Colorado Springs just a few miles from the Air Force Academy. I know it's not a ton of information, but I'd look at the AF Academy website. http://www.usafa.af.mil/index.asp They have some videos on the website that describe many of their planes. I did a search on Amazon. This book looked interesting and it has some information about the military. http://www.amazon.com/Integrating-Aerospace-Science-into-Curriculum/dp/0872879240#_
