  1. I had multiple episodes of vertigo when I had low b12. I'm on injections now and haven't had an episode in a few years. I have pernicious anemia and my stomach can't absorb b12. It's an autoimmune condition. I'd ask to have b12 and folic acid levels checked. I don't know if you've had problems with vitamin d deficiency or not. That's always a good one to get checked.
  2. Good post. Thanks for sharing. I think I've been pushed over the edge over the past month. I had to go to the ER early this month, since I had a lot of obvious blood in my urine and was in a lot of pain. It was 4 in the morning and it was a lot of blood. After completing antibiotics, my pain returned. Called the ER to get my culture results and found out they hadn't done one due to "cost savings". Went to my FPC's walki-in uti clinic, gave a urine sample which showed trace blood. I specifically asked the nurse aide to send it in for a culture. We had a big, long talk about why the ER should have sent the sample. I was put on another antibiotic by a doctor I never saw. Finished the antibiotic and the pain returned. Called for results on my urine culture. It wasn't done. While waiting to talk to the aide, the front office staff disconnected the call twice. The aide did own her mistake and tried to give me an appointment with the lousy PA who had lots of same day appointments. I accepted the apology, but said no to seeing the lousy PA. She squeezed me in with a NP who is fairly decent. I was put on my THIRD antibiotic due to my urine showing traces of blood. It took 20 days to get my first culture and it came back negative for growth. Now I have an appointment with a urologist next week and went for an x-ray yesterday that showed no kidney stones. So much for "cost savings". It would have been nice to know what a culture would have said- had one been done from the get-go. This is just one example of what I've dealt with over the past few years. I'm just frustrated and think I'm dismissed by doctors due to being a person in her mid-forties who is overweight. I think it's going to be best for me to figure out how to stay out of the system.
  3. Op...I agree. It's gotten bad. I think it's a symptom of what is going on in society, though.
  4. Has anyone else been gotten fed up dealing with doctors and the medical community? I've dealt with a recent health issues (and issues over the past 5 years) and am so fed up with the lack of attention to detail and caring that I am at the point of wanting to avoid all medical care. All it's ever done is make me sicker. I'm 50 pounds overweight and most of that is due to meds and things that were prescribed to me over the past 5 years. I think I have leaky gut and candida issues. I'm worried I am headed toward needing thyroid medication and am wondering if I can heal my stomach. Maybe I can get my thyroid nodules to stop growing or shrink? I'm at the breaking point in dealing with anyone medical and I was a nurse for 15 years. It makes me so sad that the care is this poor...and it's so expensive (even with insurance). Does anyone have any good websites or resources out there to look at alternatives to modern medicine? Any books that would get me started? Tomorrow...I'm heading to the gym to start working out again. I picked up some pro-biotic items today. Going strictly gluten free again, too. Started apple cider vinegar.
  5. I'm thinking about this do-it-yourself project for this summer. I'm wondering if anyone has ever done this themselves? How did it go? Did you save a lot of money? Was it easier or harder than you expected? Any tips?
  6. AAU had a tournament up in Denver last summer and the games did fall on Sunday.
  7. Sounds like you need some blood work done- b12, vitamin D, Thyroid check, complete blood count? When my b12 level was low I was having numbness and tingling down my arm and went to the ER to see if it was cardiac related. Also, I was short of breath climbing stairs and getting around. Of course, now that I have the diagnosed condition, I feel like every time I hear someone with those same symptoms that they have the condition, too! I know that's not the case for most people, but it has raised my awareness about how B12 deficiency is such a missed diagnosis. I hope you feel better soon.
  8. Dh drives a 2000 Nissan Maxima. It's still kicking and has been a great car. We brought our 14 year old twins home from the hospital in that car and I fully expect that it will be the first car they will learn to drive. Recently, we've had some repairs here and there, but nothing that would make us get rid of it. I used to drive it to home health car visits and it was great for winter driving, especially.
  9. I think it's hard for ds due to the fact that he plays basketball and he wants to be tall for that reason.
  10. Ds1 just turned 14 and has shot up in height. He's 5'11". Ds2 just turned 13 and isn't picking up height the way his brother did. He's about 4 inches behind where ds1 was at his age. I can tell it's causing some distress in younger ds. I'd appreciate some boy moms sharing information about differing height in brothers. Does the shorter height now possibly mean younger ds will be taller than his older brother? Younger ds's feet and arms seem to be growing, but he is very slow growing in height right now.
  11. What has been your experience? Has the coach been good to your kid? What about his/her teammates? Our experience has been mostly good. My oldest son did have a coach tell him last week that he was not going to be allowed to be a team captain because he didn't go to the school. Team captains meet with the refs and the opposing team for a minute before the game. My daughter was allowed to be a team captain on her team. It's not a battle I'm going to pick. Just wondering what others have experienced with school sports- good, bad, or indifferent.
  12. No experience with the LG dryer, but the washer was a hunk of junk. It was beautiful looking (and very expensive), but only lasted 13 months. Based on that experience, I won't buy LG. I think they knowingly put out a product that is garbage.
  13. I'd get Mexican food for them- tacos, refried beans/rice, chips, salsa. If there are 15 boys, I'd provide enough food for 30. I've fed boys from the team my husband coaches and they will eat 2-3 times what a normal person eats.
  14. My daughter is 14 and doesn't eat a lot. I have 2 boys who just turned 13 and 14. The boys kill my grocery bill. My 14 year old is 5'11' and weighs 117 pounds. He eats ALL THE TIME. He's added 7 inches of height in a year and doesn't seem to be slowing down. We've always had periods of time where they eat more (a month here or there), but in the past year there has been no sign of my oldest slowing down the amount he consumes. I try to keep up and I shop frequently. All of my kids play basketball. They are really active and burn the calories quickly. My sons are just starting to get into training to build strength/muscle.
  15. This is pretty common around here, too. I've seen parents start their kids a year late in school, anticipating that it would give their kid an advantage in sports later on. My sons typically have to play against kids who are in the same grade, but 1-2 years older than them. 1-2 years of additional height on a boy is huge in basketball.
  16. In some cases, yes, this is true. My husband coaches 2 competitive basketball teams. Our teams play 3 weekends a month and practice 4 hours a week. The parents have to pay for all the fees and get up early on weekends and travel to games. Our kids are in the 8th grade. If we offered most of these kids more playing opportunities, they'd take it. Our parents are poor and tired most of the time, but they do it because the kids are passionate and they want to support what the kids love. Once in a while, we will have someone approach us about their kid playing on the team and the parents will state that they want the kid to play- never once mentioning it's what the kid wants to do. My husband doesn't take those kids on the team. It's an investment all-around and the kid should love what he/she is doing. I don't like what happened to youth sports. It didn't used to be like this. I remember kids playing all the sports when I was in school. Nobody "specialized" in the 5th grade. It's become super competitive to even make a school team due to how good a kid can become at a sport when playing it year round. Something seemed to happen in the mid-90s. These "clubs" realized their was money to be made and promoted the year round sports to parents. Most parents want to give their kids opportunities to succeed at what they love, so they participate. For parents whose kids want to play competitively, it's a no-win situation.
  17. Is he being enrolled by age or by grade? My son is 13 and in the 7th grade. He will play basketball for the school next month. Practices are from 2:45-5:30 every weekday. It's pretty intense. At the rec level, though, they had one hour practices twice a week and 1 game on Saturday. If it's a competitive league, the coaches are there to teach them as much as they can in a short period of time. If it's a competitive league, the practice time doesn't seem excessive. If it's a rec league, I think it's too much practice time.
  18. Bumping for any other input/experiences.
  19. There were no recommendations. I felt that the diagnosis was dismissed. I have a very low opinion of the PA that ordered the ultrasound. Last night, ds was noting that he's not growing. His brother is 13 months older and is 7-8 inches taller. At this age, older ds was 4 inches taller than ds. I started looking up how a varicocele impacts testosterone and I'm thinking it might be causing slowed growth in ds.
  20. He had complained of some groin pain and I took him to the doctor. He was sent for an ultrasound and they discovered a varicocele on on one side. Does anyone have any experience with this condition? I was assuming I'd let him get the condition fixed when he was an adult and decided to proceed with having a family.
  21. My daughter used to get canker sores all the time, too. I saw a post on here about toothpaste and we switched her to Tom's. She has done well and rarely gets sores anymore. Of course, she's off wheat now, too, and rarely eats it. I'd start with the toothpaste and see if it makes a difference. Have you talked to a dentist? I'd wonder if there might be a rinse that could help her get through this outbreak- something cleansing and numbing.
  22. My Mom's side of the family were farmers. I've done some exploring on ancestry.com and they were farmers back to the Revolutionary War. My Dad's side of the family were not farmers, but some did not come to this country until the early 1900s.
  23. We do whatever ds wants to do, since it's his birthday. It used to involve Chuck-E-Cheese, but these days it involves bowling and lazer tag. I always get New Years hats for all of us to wear that evening. Ds tries to stay up until midnight. He turns 13 this year, so maybe he'll make it.
  24. Got this one for ds a year or two ago from Amazon. He likes his. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004AR0N7E?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
