  1. Okay, ladies, I think I can put this one to rest! First of all, thank you Schele for taking the time to check into that for me, but also thank you to you 2nd two ladies for letting me know your Wiley versions DO match the Gutenberg link. Otherwise I would have been right back where I started, in a cloud of confusion. I matched up the First, Third, and Sixth readers from my Eclectic, Revised Van Nostrand Reinhold version to the Wiley version at the Gutenberg link and . . . lo and behold . . . they ARE the correct version. So I managed to get my hands on a set of 6 that match the Wiley but were from the previous publisher. Three of the books have never even been opened! So I am completely satisfied and considering my inquiry complete. Again "Thank you! Thank you for answering my question!" (That's a line from Moonstruck.) P. S. Schele, I hope you're not confused, now?
  2. Ah, ladies, the plot thickens! Really, only WTM moms could even begin to feel my pain on this issue, without first recommending I try some OCD meds. This is such a great forum, I should stop by more than once a year. :grouphug:
  3. I answered your 2nd paragraph in my post before this one, but THANK YOU Nancy Drew! LOL That was just BUGGING me. Mine do match the covers of the link you shared here. Later tonight when I look at the links to the books for sale I am going to take the free books and match up some of the stories with the books I have here at home. Then I will know if they match, once an for all!
  4. Thank you everyone! I will come back later to look at the links you have provided to the books. Tracey, we are about 3/4 of the way through OPG, and so I'm not starting with the Third Reader yet, as WTM says to start the 3rd rdr. after you finish OPG. I just need something phonics based besides my other readers since my dd has already started reading ahead of where we are in OPG. Although I don't know how, because I didn't teach her anything else other than OPG and practice reading. Not that I'm complaining. ;)
  5. Wow! Okay then, thank you so much! I guess that makes my little inquiry a mute point, except of course that I'll never know what version mine are when I resell them in a used curriculum sale! Anyone know -- by the time I print all these readers out will it end up taking up so many of my ink cartridges that I'd be better off cost-wise having them printed at a print shop, if that is even allowed? (Um. Did everyone else know this was free online except for me? :blushing: ) Many thanks! Tonie
  6. Hello. I asked this question about 6 months ago and I did not receive the info I needed. I got some guesses and discussion, but didn't come across anyone who could truly tell me what I have. Now I am getting closer to starting with these so I'm trying again. If you are brave enough to read through my actual question is at the end. :001_huh: Thanks! In the 2004 edition of WTM on page 62, the author states the following: "(If you choose to use McGuffey, make sure to get the originals republished by John Wiley & Sons, rather than the reworked version published by Eerdmans.)" If I were a writer maybe this sentence would make sense, but when she says "republished" and "reworked" those are not terms they use on the actual McGuffey Readers. There is no "republished" or "reworked" version. I only see words like Revised. Also none of the names she mentions above are on the McGuffey Readers I have found anywhere. So I bought some at a used sale, thinking they were the ones I needed, and now I don't know. My set is McGuffey's Eclectic Readers, Revised Edition. (Does this mean it's "republished" or "reworked"???) The names do not match. I have Van Nostrand Reinhold as the publisher. WTM indicates a 1997 copy write date, but what I have is from some version of the original series. Each book has all three of the following CW dates: CW, 1879, by Van Antwerp, Brag & Col, CW, 1896, by American Book Company, CW, 1907 & 1920, by H. H. Vail. None of the names she mentions. I did learn last time I posted that we are not supposed to use the version of McGuffey from a certain period of time when it was published as a whole language based program. Mine is not during those years, if you go by date. But it is not completely Phonics based, either. It's a combo. The books state that they are "especially adapted to the Phonic Method, the Word Method, or a combination of the two." Therefore, there is some whole language in what I have, but there is also Phonics. So maybe I need the version that is Phonics only? I have no clue. AND by the way, what REALLY confuses me is that the latest date I can find anywhere is 1920, but there is a BAR CODE on the back of each book! LOL What do I have??? So. I want the exact version she is talking about in the book. I deviate from some things in WTM, but not on this one. Do I need to get rid of these and start over? If so, ordering them at the bookstore for $10.95 each, as suggested in p. 84 of WTM, is not my preferred option due to cost. Why can't I find this version when I try to order the books online? Thank you in advance! Blessings, Tonie
  7. Halfway through the lessons it is, then! And yes, it is SW-A that I plan to do with the OPGTR. I appreciate the input on starting after phonics. It's good to know that worked out for someone should I need to wait longer than halfway through the lessons, for whatever reason. Thank you, ladies!
  8. Hello, has anyone ever actually asked this question? Because I am sure "opinions" will vary but I would like to know what the authors actually intended in the 2004 version of TWTM at the bottom of page 52, or if you had the same question what you ended up doing and why it worked/did not work for you. (This is in the Spelling section of The Grammar Stage, if you have a different version.) They state "We recommend that you get at least halfway through The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading primer before beginning spelling." This is very different depending on whether you go by lessons or page numbers. If you go by lessons then Lesson 115 is right near the middle of the program, and it starts on page 198. If you go by page numbers the middle of the book would be page 185, which is lesson 105. Because there is a difference of 10 whole lessons I am not comfortable just picking one, I would like to know what they meant. Lesson 105/p. 185 begins the Common Spellings for the Other Vowel Sounds section and Lesson 110/p.198 starts at the midpoint of that same section, with a review of the first half of that lesson. I feel they mentioned "the middle" specifically because of the content that was covered up to that point, and now I want to know where "that point" is. After Lesson 105 you HAVE in fact covered a good number of spelling rules, but I don't know whether it's "enough." I know there is a possibility that some of you out there in forum land will think I don't need to know the answer to this question because it isn't that important, but please bear in mind that expressing that particular opinion in your response does not address my query.
  9. VA6336, thank you for defining the terms! All the acronyms are losing me. :)
