  1. :hurray: Congratulations to all the admits! DS has been accepted to: New Mexico Tech (scholarship) Cal Poly Pomona University of Minnesota (scholarship) Cal State U - Northridge He's so happy about his future and can't wait for Aug. to arrive :001_smile:. Such a contrast from all the stress of junior year!
  2. If your ds decides to try the protein shake option, this BlenderBottle is cheap and much quieter than an electric blender. He could probably even shake it and drink it on his way to class.
  3. Thank you Farmgirl70. This is VERY useful information. On behalf of all homeschooling moms in CA, way to represent!! :001_wub: One CSU down, 22 more to go (And 9 UCs...) I'll keep your method in mind when ds applies next fall. Perhaps we need to just fight the fight (politely of course) school by school and hope that over time they'll be more accepting of our independent homeschoolers -- hey a girl can dream! :D I think ds will just take aim at a couple next fall -- not the other 31 :svengo:
  4. So if I'm a "private school" homeschooler via R-4(private school affidavit), all I need to do is use a certain textbook and then ds can say it's an approved course on his college apps? Or is there an approval process one needs to go through like one can for AP course approval? I've never heard of this route before. Would be great to know...
  5. Thanks for sharing, Running the race. Very interesting! And Congrats to your son  Have/had any other homeschoolers you know IRL had luck with CSULB before?
  6. She sounds REALLY busy! But personally I'd never give NHS that much power over my child's life! Honestly, if she chooses to go to an admitted students day instead of timing for a track or swim meet, what's NHS gonna do? Boot her from the club? Good riddance! She's got her acceptances in hand - a college isn't likely to withdraw acceptance because she refused to time a track meet and NHS dropped her (would the college even know?)...but YMMV, Just my 2 cents and I haven't experienced this senior year shuffle yet, so what do I know : ) Best of luck to your dd, and congrats to her on so many admittances : )
  7. Do any of the Cal State schools also follow the "Admission by exam" option? Looking for a "safety" other than the transfer from CC route. Any btdt besides Farmgirl70? Or know kids IRL who were accepted in this way to a Cal State?? We homeschool independently here in SoCal and Ds has taken a few CC classes but he won't have all the A-G equivalents met by the end of this Spring - his Junior year. He tests well and would make the admit-by-exam mark, but he doesn't think the UCs are a good fit for him. He's looking for a smaller tech school. However, he needs a safety when applying next year, and honestly we're having a very hard time finding one that is cheap as dirt and a shoo in for admittance : ) I know CC is his ultimate back up - but it would be nice if he could "Love thy safety", kwim?
  8. Congratulations to all the future commended and semi-finalists! Great to here the happy news :hurray: Ds got his score today here in SoCal. Probably commended (?) but alas, several points below California's average cut-off for semi-finalists. On the bright side, it was an improvement from last year at least, and he doesn't seem too crushed. And now I can stop obsessing about the mail and get on with life!!
  9. Congratulations to your DD  My Ds and I went to a college fair last weekend and spoke at length to the UMN rep. Ds got very excited about the school. If you don't mind me asking, did your DD apply with only the standard required info (SAT/GPA and application), or did she send in add'l homeschooling info like course descriptions, book lists etc.,? This rep wasn't an expert on homeschool applicants so I was curious what worked administratively. :001_smile: TIA! And Congrats to all on the acceptances - so exciting to hear the good news!
  10. You may have already done this, but College Board has a search here that will list schools by city that are offering the PSAT (not necessarily to you!) At least it gives you a couple addresses to explore. Really sorry you're having trouble finding a place. :grouphug: It's stressful hanging in limbo, but I'm sure it will all work out for you eventually. "Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming..."
  11. Too funny! Perhaps I should have called an all-girls school, for my son's PSAT!!!! I bet he would have liked that... :drool5: (I meant this in a joking, not creepy way!)
  12. We register as a private school in CA too. True we don't have access to school classes through the district or sports or ECs. However, when it came to the PSAT we had luck with the local ps high school last year, and a ps magnet this year. It took a bit of calling around last year. Middle schools turned us down, a couple private schools never responded to my request, and initially the local high school said they "didn't know if it was allowed." But then local hs called back and was amenable. Unfortunately either College Board or the high school lost his answer sheet (neither fessed up), so I wanted to try a different school this year just in case. I'll be meeting with the college guidance counselor at this new ps magnet on Monday to pay the $14 registration fee and pick up the student booklet. Easy peasey! She said they've had homeschoolers take the PSAT there before and also AP exams if it's a test they offer their own students, and said she had nice experiences with the other homeschoolers. So thank you to those nice homeschoolers who paved the way for us! : ) When your kids are older, just start calling the schools closest to you and ask to speak to the college guidance counselor - seems every high school around here has one. Let them know that the College Board requests high schools to allow homeschoolers to take the PSAT, and quickly tell them you understand that you will need to pay a registration fee. I think that may be why some schools here get nervous - they don't want to pay for a homeschooler so they just ignore your request. If you don't hear back from anyone, I suggest being proactive and cold-calling! Show up on their doorstep - it's harder to turn you down face-to-face with a check in hand : )
  13. Thanks so much for the heads up. I had this book in my amazon cart waiting until my wallet got bigger. Now I don't have to wait : ) Yay!! Can't beat free!
  14. I bought the 2ed workbooks new from Amazon too. But my 1ed text was used. I really only need the solutions to the two workbooks now, in order to follow Regentrude's syllabus and lesson plans. I guess that will require calling and talking to a Pearson rep, eh? Interesting that it was a free cd for you though. Thanks for the info. Glad it worked out for you :001_smile:
  15. Congrats! Did you buy your books and workbooks used, and then purchase the Instructor resource guide through Pearson? May I ask how much the instructor's resources cd cost (I couldn't find it online)?? Thanks!
  16. Thanks so much for this advice. I hadn't heard that before, and ds will be transferring CC credits in the future. Off to round up those syllabi! :driving:
  17. :bigear: :bigear: Bumping. I too am in the same boat.
  18. I'm happy many of you have gotten them, albeit quite late. I'm just so glad my ds is not a junior. CB said they definitely never received his answer sheet from the school. The counselor from the high school says they sent it in. So that's that, I guess. Ugh! Dh says to try to find a different high school to take it at next year. Which I suppose is only wise, given the incompetence, but I'm bummed because we wanted him to become familiar with the location so next year would go more smoothly. Time to move on and focus on homeschooling this semester. We'll cross the PSAT bridge again next fall - hopefully successfully next time ; ) Congrats to all your dc for passing this milestone : )
  19. I too called College Board yesterday, but I was told my ds wasn't even in the computer!! A bit disconcerting...thank goodness he's only in 10th, but honestly. The high school where he took it says they sent in his answer sheet to CB. My ds remembers using the homeschool code and writing in our home address. Now he's missing in the mist. CB says my case will be sent to the Resolution Department for a system search and they'll let me know in 5-7 business days. Somehow I don't feel confident they'll find him with all the strange anecdotes this year. Question for those with CB experience: Is this kind of thing very unusual? or not so unusual, really? I think I'd be freaking out if he were a Junior ; )
  20. I feel for you - we're still waiting. Wonder if I should call them like you did just to check if the code was correct...I suppose I'll give it 'til Tuesday.
  21. I'm jealous. ; ) We're still waiting here in our part of SoCal.
  22. :iagree: A little info: I'm in Cali and our local CC is free (yeah!) for dual enrolled students - you pay for books. Spring registration begins early Dec. for us. Classes begin February '13. Once my son is graduated from my homeschool, he will pay the standard tuition rate. Locally at least, dual enrolled students are last in line (online!) to register. Also, dual enrolled kids are limited to 11 credits a semester here. But I'm not complaining. My ds took a career development class as his first CC class and it worked out well for him. It was only 8 weeks and pass/fail. It was a great way for him to get used to being on campus as well as getting used to an outside teacher's expectations without the big stress of pulling a 4.0! He learned a lot about his personality/skills/motivations etc., during the course and now has a good idea where he's heading in terms of a major. A bit of self exploration never hurts prior to college :001_smile:. The CCs have agreements with their local Cal State Unis as well as the UCs. You can transfer once you've gotten 60 credits. The course book tells you which courses are transferable to UCs or CSUs. It also has info re General Ed requirements and majors. Many homeschoolers use the CCs here to complete several General Ed classes while in high school for free. Some ambitious even complete their AA or A.S. while in high school, then transfer to a uni for the final 2 (or so) years. The guidance counselors at your local CC can certainly help you. FWIW, I wouldn't be in such a rush to graduate him early unless he's asking. I think the beauty of homeschooling is in its flexibility to meet your child's needs. I have phases of panic and frustration and doubt, but I always come back to the idea that this is a journey, not a race. And I don't need to compare my ds's pace with anyone else's. Every person is different, and each of us has a different path. Best of luck to you and your DS :)
  23. I have no personal experience with this one, however, I have The WEM. SWB recommends the unabridged Marcus Dods translation published by the Modern library '93, for scholars. She recommends the abridged edition, also published by Modern Library '94, for "amateur historians". I think that would be me! The ISBN for the abridged edition is 0-67-960087-6. HTH!
  24. So far, 10th grade plans: Algebra II - Lial's likely (though AoPS is a possibility) Chemistry - at cc; Chang or Tro @ home if he can't get into the cc History/Lit - SWB's History of the Medieval World, and lit ala TWTM/TWEM English - Warriner's/LAoW/WttW/IEW's Writing Research Papers French I - at cc; otherwise, Galore Park @ home Latin II - Galore Park Some possible cc extras: Guitar, Karate, Electronics, Pre-engineering or CS class, depending on availability. We're pretty low on the cc registration totem pole, so I have to be realistic. And cc classes also eat up a lot of time when you add in travel time!! So we'll see...
