  1. I like your idea of letting him take notes on any YouTube video. He used to be interested in forestry because he likes to be outside, but now he just wants to be a YouTuber. He's been working on his YouTube channels (about playing a certain video game) for a couple years now. He's a little obsessive about getting videos released on schedule and checking his analytics. Unfortunately he has screen addiction tendencies, so we have to strictly limit his time on all screens. We reluctantly let him work on his channel as a hobby, with a max limit of 7 hours per week. Being allowed to video edit is the main reason he tries to get his school done because he can't do it until his work is done for the day. Needless to say, DH and I aren't pleased with his planned career. We'd like it much more if he made videos about useful things, rather than something that just seems to be an extension of his video game addict tendency. (My encouragement to make videos about his sport, which he is nationally ranked in and coaches about 12-15 hours per week, has gone nowhere.)
  2. Yes, I agree with all of these things. He doesn't want to put the work in. I have tried to explain that "studying" is not the same as merely reading. Which baseline skills might be missing? I agree that he fights me on the things he needs the most. He was diagnosed a year ago and doesn't seem to care about his diagnosis at all or what it means. I think I need to just make him go ahead and read more about ADHD. He's an A student at home with me, but only because I have accommodated so much over the years. The whole situation is frustrating to me because I was valedictorian and a very conscientious student, and he is soooooo not like I was. My parents literally never once had to tell me to do my homework (which began in 5th grade in my school) or study for anything. Now I get yelled at by him on an almost daily basis about school, etc.
  3. I'm not sure self-evaluation would be very helpful for my ADHD son. He doesn't seem to have much ability to self-evaluate in any area of his life.
  4. Getting cash prices from a dentist is nothing like trying to get them from a doctor's office or other medical facility. I believe I've read than only 50% of people have dental insurance, so dentists are used to offering cash prices. I've never had dental insurance as an adult and I've never had trouble getting prices. It isn't anything like a doctor's office where you're told, "There's no way to know how much a routine appointment or x-ray will cost!" Questions to ask: How much is a new patient appointment? Does it include bitewing x-rays? How much is a regular cleaning? Does it include everything, or is there a separate charge for the dentist looking in my mouth? Do you participate in any discount programs or memberships?
  5. DS16 (medicated for ADHD) doesn't have very good study skills. He'll do the reading, but trying to get him to take notes (either as he reads or going back after reading) is like pulling teeth. The most I've been able to get him to do is occasionally typing some notes for history or making a cheat sheet at the end of each biology chapter to use with open-book tests. He has done minimal taking notes from videos (while pausing them) and none from videos or audio without pausing them. He is bright but has always fought me about doing school. He sees it as an imposition on his time.
  6. Give me your best tips for teaching teens to drive. DS16 has already had 6 hours behind the wheel in driver's ed. Today was the last day, and he is going to get his permit tomorrow.
  7. I did it at a clinic because the home studies don't look for limb movements. Yes, I had a full iron panel in January, and my ferritin was 94.
  8. I just saw my sleep study results, but the follow-up appointment isn't until July. It looks like I had a few apnea events, but many hypopnea events (shallow breathing rather than breathing totally stopping), especially during REM sleep. Limb movements also woke me up repeatedly. Can anyone share any success stories, especially with diet and lifestyle changes?
  9. I forgot to mention that we've been having trouble with an unusual number of mealy apples as well.
  10. Has produce quality really gone downhill the last 6-8 months? I've never been very picky about produce, but I've had so many things go bad recently! I've stopped buying berries from Aldi because nearly every package I've bought from them this year turned out to be moldy, even after I began looking at them carefully after it happened about six times in a row. The grapes often look old as well. I've even had two packages of )pre-peeled )garlic turn moldy! I went to use a package today (good until June 10) that I had just opened last week, and although it was fine last week, today most of the garlic was moldy. Aldi is popular in my area, so it isn't slow turnover. I've never had problems with them like this until last fall or winter. My list of produce to only get at another overpriced chain is getting longer. (Unfortunately, even at the expensive store I've had some packages of broccoli slaw go bad before the date on the package.)
  11. Since three of you recommended the same brand, I'll buy them and see how they work. I'll post an update in a few weeks.
  12. I thought it was strange that the doctor's son died the day before his second birthday. I thought SIDS was only for young infants, not kids old enough to walk.
  13. My first thought when I read this was, "Why is this guy wanting to merge their banks accounts, etc. when they aren't married yet?" I didn't change any of that stuff until after we were married, especially since I changed my name. I wouldn't let DH know any of my passwords until after the wedding.
  14. I have a Brother laser printer (MFC-9340CDW) that needs new toner for all four colors. Replacing them with Brother brand toner is $240+! Costco sells a two pack of black toner for $140 but doesn't have any other colors. Cyan, yellow, and magenta seem to run about $60 each on Amazon. Other retailers are similarly priced. Has anyone had a good experience with off-brand compatible cartridges? I think maybe five years ago I tried one brand that worked well enough. When I went to get more, they were gone. I tried another brand that had good reviews, and the results were terrible! In fact, the results were so bad that even today unless I select the "black and white" setting when printing the printer will leave color streaks on black and white documents. I've done without CYM for the last year or two because I only wanted to fork over the money for Brother brand toner in black. Unfortunately that cartridge is almost out, so I have to make a decision very soon. Any suggestions?
  15. A few years ago I was taking potato starch to get more resistant starch in my diet (to help my gut flora). Even just 1 TBLS per day made me feel like I was watching movies all night. I finally had to stop because I felt like I was dreaming for half the night or more, and it didn't feel like it was giving me the mental break I needed.
  16. My parents like to kayak on creeks and rivers. A kayaking club in their area arranged for people to pick up trash in a section of creek. I think they cleaned up a few mile stretch, but I might be wrong about the length. Anyway, I think my mom said the club reported removing about 60 tires from the creek! ETA: I think this is evidence that if the fee to dispose of used tires is too high then people will just dump them on their own.
  17. Thanks. I'm going to download the lit guides. Do they have anything downloadable for other subjects?
  18. DS16 was diagnosed with ADHD last year. In the fall he began treatment with the generic for Adderall XR. The improvement was noticeable the first day. He started at 10 mg and eventually moved up to 15 mg because the lower dose seemed to wear off too early. There haven't been any side effects.
  19. Does this test cover ADHD meds, or is more for depression and anxiety?
  20. One thing about skills and knowledge is that they can't be stolen. Although I haven't read much about prepping in years, I have often wondered why things nobody can take at gunpoint aren't emphasized more. I guess it isn't as easy to get people to spend money on training as it is on stuff.
  21. Adderall and its generics are also available in time released. They are pretty cheap. The Good RX price near me for them is about $37. Before we started DS 16 on meds last fall, I read a book on ADHD that had multiple chapters about all the drugs options. The doctor usually recommends starting on either Ritalin or Adderall first (two different types of stimulants) because they are cheaper before moving on to the more expensive stimulants (or the non-stimulants).
  22. As far as I can tell, many people use "prepping" to refer to having plans "just in case" while living a normal life. "Survivalist" often has a more extreme connotation, such as referring to people that almost seem hopeful for something apocalyptic to happen. One thing I have wondered about is why more people with the prepping (or especially survivalist) mindset don't do more to keep themselves in peak physical shape: eating right (Who wants to start hard times already deficient in nutrients?), strong (You'll wish you had gone to physical therapy to help those nagging pains if the power goes out.), and with good cardio fitness (You might wish you could outrun the bad guys).
  23. I'm surprised that such a small amount of supplementing makes much difference for you. Considering that we need anywhere from 2.5-4.7 grams (2500-4700 mg) of potassium daily (depending on which source you believe), the amount you are supplementing is only 4-8% of what adults need. Apparently potassium tablets are limited to 99 mg by the FDA because they can cause stomach issues. The FDA does allow powder in higher amounts. I take 1/2 tsp per day (the daily limit on the bottle), which gives me about 20% of the RDA. This is about the amount used in the study on potassium for RLS and PLMD. The authors of that study did it after giving potassium to people in another study for something else. They had so many people say it helped their legs and sleep that they decided to do a study on that. One chunk of participants had improvement within 15 days, another by 30 days, and almost all of the rest by day 45. I don't know if it's helping my RSL and PLMD because I've also restarted gabapentin for them recently, but I did notice that within a few weeks (before the gabapentin) my Oura ring began showing that I was getting deep sleep in the first half of the night, like a normal person, instead only getting it in the second half of the night.
  24. Do most online course providers offer classes in the summer? Can we start a list of summer 2022 online classes?
  25. Foods High in Potassium I think the beans in this list are dried beans, not cooked.
