  1. My son says that Captain Sparkles is pretty good about not swearing and that Ipodmail doesn't swear at all except for one time where he said something like: "I'm very sorry, I never swear, but I have to say that this mod is s--t". He also thinks that DocM77 doesn't swear, but he's not 100% sure. You could watch a couple of his videos and see what you think.
  2. My son really wanted to see that one so we went a couple of weeks ago. We both really enjoyed it.
  3. I just want to know where I can get a savings account that earns 10% interest per year. eta: without joining the military! That ship has sailed...
  4. My son and I saw it last week and we both liked it. I liked all the actors. Yes, I thought some of it felt like a video game and that got a bit old. One thought I had while watching it (and this has probably been mentioned in some reviews, but I haven't read any) was: So, Superman had two fathers and they are both Robin Hood? No wonder he's got a thing for justice.
  5. It depends who it is. For example, his tutor is Mrs. Lastname, another instructor is Maestro Lastname, his former art teacher was Miss Firstname (her choice). Most friends of the family are called by their first names. If I knew someone liked to be called Mr or Mrs Lastname, that would be fine.
  6. Loki's Wolves sounds great! I'm also really happy to learn of the Sea of Trolls trilogy.
  7. Yes, it's hard to load a car with a two year-old. No, you probably shouldn't leave the 2 year-old in a running car and then walk away from it. I am a pretty easygoing parent, but that just sounds like a bad idea. I am not really the type to say much beyond, "oh she is making me nervous". I could offer to watch the kids, but the car is already running and the kid is already in the driver's seat, so what could I really do without overstepping? I feel the need to add: If I was done and ready to go home I would have just gone. I don't tend to stand around wringing my hands about what other people are doing with their kids.
  8. I agree. It's OK to correct facts and you can do it without talking badly about the other parent.
  9. Maybe the restaurant referred to them as "party of 3". I agree you can pretty much text all you want at a big gathering, where the other people there can ignore you and talk to someone else. I think it's OK to do a little texting at dinner--I would answer a text from my child, for example--but I do emphasize little.
  10. I'd probably go for a face mask like in the movies (the kind that make me look like another person). Then, when my face is scanned by one of those Facebook cameras, it won't register as me when they tag it and put it on the internet with all "my" information. I also think this idea will be much more popular with men than wearing a veil.
  11. If your friend doesn't want to play, you stop and play something else. That goes for more than just toy guns. Don't "shoot" at people you don't know (for example, don't point your fingers like a gun at someone passing by in a car). That's about it. I don't recall my son ever doing this, but if he had I would have told him not to and explained why that's very unpleasant for the other person.
  12. I'm starting to wonder if it isn't a ploy. They know telling us not to say popsicle will make us want to say popsicle. Yet they must also know that reverse psychology is a well-known concept and many people will figure it out eventually. So they think we won't say popsicle. But then that means they don't want us to say it, so of course we must. But, if we do, are we just playing right into their hands?
  13. I won't bow to Unilever!! I make my own popsicles with apple juice. And I call them... popsicles.
  14. My son loves the Warriors series (as do I!) and he also liked The Unwanteds. On the cover there is a quote about it being Harry Potter crossed with The Hunger Games and it kind of is, only quite a bit less dark. I'm not saying it's a literary masterpiece (eta: nor am I saying it's poorly written), but he might like it if he's a young teen.
  15. Well, popsicles are quite the hot topic, while Harry Potter isn't controversial at all.
  16. Because she was at her grandma's house where she is used to helping herself. There were popsicles in the freezer that were bought by Grandma, and both Grandma and the girl's parents were OK with her having a popsicle. The OP made a problem for herself where there was none. If the girl had been at the OP's house and it was the OP's freezer and popsicles, that would be different. I think both parents have overstepped. I wouldn't appreciate either the popsicle incident or the Harry Potter comment.
  17. That is so interesting that it depends on the other vowel sounds in the phrase! Gine Iggle! I love it. Regarding the OP and the maps, closet wasn't on there was it? Clawset or Clahset?
  18. The Pittsburghers I know say "yins" (or yinz?). And they call their local beer brand "Arn City" ("arn" can be found on the periodic table of elements). My parents once received a letter from a relative that addressed them as "you'se". I was glad of it because now I know how to spell it and where the apostrophe goes.
  19. Five Children and It (the movie is set in a different time period). I agree about The Borrowers and watching both the movie from the 90s and The Secret World of Arrietty. Two very different takes on the same story. The Wind in the Willows and the crazy movie with Steve Coogan, Eric Idle and Terry Jones called Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
  20. I tried to answer this earlier today and got an error message. Yes, it's because there is more to do in Mackinaw City (it's definitely not less touristy!). It really depends on what kind of vacation you want. I went with my mom, sisters and son and we needed more to do than walk/bike around the island. I think we would have found staying on the island too confining. Staying on the island does have its advantages though and I'm sure it makes for a relaxing vacation.
  21. We went three years ago. We stayed in Mackinaw City in a very touristy hotel (Days Inn, I think), but it had a beach and a pool, was really close to one of the ferry lines (3 minute-walk) and we were able to walk to town as well. My son loved the cheesy laser light show they have every night in the center of the outdoor shopping area--we had to go twice! We spent one day on the island and visited Fort Mackinac and walked around. I liked the island, but was glad we stayed in Mackinaw City instead. We also visited Colonial Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City. We all enjoyed it--there were musket and cannon demonstrations, a "wedding", and a Children's Life Tour that's all about what a child's life was like at the fort in the late 1700s.
  22. Ah, that makes sense. You're right, Frank could give someone nightmares. It is especially creepy when the therapist asks Donnie's parents if he's told them about him.
  23. This is one of my favorite movies! eta: I'm with you on The Notebook, though. Glorified dysfunctional relationship, plus the guy is not really all that poor. He bought and fixed up a mansion with a private lake!
