  1. Thank you! I will look into those options. I hadn't thought about skipping WWS1-2.
  2. My ds14 will be in 9th grade next Fall and I am trying to figure out the best way to approach writing. Writing is not my strength, so I am not confident enough to pull it together on my own or just using ideas from curriculum to apply to other subjects. We have been in Classical Conversations (leaving after this year of ChB), so he has completed some IEW and LTW level 1. I feel like his writing could use a lot of improvement in style, and I think he could also improve in the skill of outlining and narration. I have been reading tons of threads and like the looks of CW, and if I went with that, I would get it now and have him go through Homer for the rest of this year and begin Diogenes in the Fall. I'm wondering if this would be a good option since he has already completed LTW 1. I do like that vocabulary is included, since otherwise I would be looking for a program for that too. He wouldn't need the grammar instruction, but it would be a good review, if we choose not to skip those sections. I'm also thinking about WWS, but I don't think he needs such a slow pace. I haven't come across anything yet, but is there a condensed or faster version of WWS? Or other similar options? I just feel like he needs to solidify the basics a little bit. If I went with WWS or something similar, I was looking to utilize Killgallon sentence composing to help with style. This is the more science/math-minded of my two. He is bright, but doesn't like to work hard or work slowly...skills I am hoping to develop before he goes off to college, and I think a good writing program can help him with that. I wish I could have his middle school years back to really work on writing, but it is what it is and I'm hoping that someone might have a recommendation for our situation - making up for lost time without killing ourselves or feeling too far behind. 🙂 Thank you!!
  3. I'm having a hard time keeping up with this thread! :) In the past week I finished Stiff and Garden Spells. I enjoyed Stiff, and thought Garden Spells was just OK. I picked up Davita's Harp at the library yesterday, since the 3 books I put on hold aren't in yet. They will all come in next week...it seems like I either have no books or too many books. :) I'm also currently reading Because He Loves Me (Elyse Fitzpatrick) for a book club. So far this year: 9. Garden Spells 8. The Hunger Games (a re-read to prepare for the movie...the first time I listened to the audio book, and I think I enjoyed it that way more because the sentence fragments weren't as obvious) 7. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress 6. Gregor the Overlander 5. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks 4. The Tale of Despereaux 3. Irreparable Harm 2. Operation Mincemeat 1. Sarah's Key
  4. Thanks! I am enjoying Balzac. Thanks for the recommendation - I'll put it on my (very long) list of books to read! :)
  5. I have been lurking on the book a week threads and have enjoyed all the book suggestions, so I thought I'd jump in and post. I'm currently reading Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress and listening to Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, which I am thoroughly enjoying. It is right up my alley, as I wanted to be a coroner for a while. :) Books I've read so far this year: Sarah's Key Irreparable Harm The Tale of Despereaux (a read aloud) The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Gregor the Overlander I also have The Hunger Games out from the library. I listened to the audiobook already, but wanted to actually read it before the movie comes out. Thanks for letting me jump in! :)
  6. I am just getting started homeschooling (DS turned 6 in December, so he's officially in K but we're slowly easing into 1st grade work), and I just wanted to say thank you to you all for all the indirect help you have given me in deciding on curriculum. I have learned much from searching the forum and am very appreciative of everyone who has given examples and answered questions, as I have gained much information and confidence as I begin this new adventure with my kiddos. :) I feel like I don't have much to add to discussions since I'm just starting out, but I did want to express my gratitude! :)
