  1. I have an older copy of WTM that recommends Power Glide for French which it seems is out of print. I'm looking for a self guided curriculum for my 6th grade daughter. What would you recommend?

  3. Thanks for the replies. My plan was to follow the WTM program and use the history Encyclopedia and maybe add in Old Test. events (which seems overwhelming to plan out). But now I am considering some of the curricula choices you listed above. Dang. Now I don't know which route to choose.
  4. Does the Human Odyssey Series cover Old Testament events? I notice CBD carries it so I thought it might have biblical events as well.
  5. We have done SOTW the past 4 years for 1st through 4th grade and loved it. I do feel like I am jumping off a cliff a bit with just using a history encyclopedia next year. We own The Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World but this is not one recommended in WTM. Does anyone know why? Is there a reason I should purchase one of the ones recommended in WTM instead of just using the kingfisher that I have?
  6. I'm having a hard time choosing which aologia science to use next year too! I'd love to hear a few replies.
  7. I have no papers for homeschooling, no student IDs or an educator ID. Where do you get these things? Our state does not require any of these things. Thank you for all the tips. Our original plan was to go to Disneyland this fall so discounts or not CW will be WAY cheaper lol! I'm just curious if the extra programs are worth it to go during homeschool days.
  8. What paperwork did they require? I have been homeschooling for years but I have no official documents. My state doesn't require any.
  9. We are planning to visit CW this fall since it correlates with the time period DD9 will be studying. I just realized that they will have home school days the month before we were thinking about going. We have not booked anything yet so it would be easy to change our dates with one exception. Going a month later would make it much easier on my husband's work schedule. He can make it work for the home school dates but it may be a bit more stressful for him. Are home school days at CW worth it or should we stick with our original dates? What special things do they offer during home school day?
  10. Each year I like to read biographies, historical accounts, and even historical fiction pertaining to the time period DD8 is studying. We will begin SOTW III with a heavy emphasis on American history and a unit on Native American history. What adult books have you enjoyed from or about this time period?
  11. Does anyone use a georaphy curriculum with SOTW III or additional maps? We didn't last year but my daughter is really into so I would like to this year.
  12. We are doing SOTW III next year with DD8 and per WTM's reccomendations I looked up Blackline Maps to accompany our history. But Knowledge Quest's website says the Blackline Maps, World History are out of print. When looking at other options on their site I become overwhelmed because I am just not that familar with their products. What do you use? I am looking for something to reinforce the geography we are studying in history. Should I just buy Blackline Maps, American History? Or is there are another Knowledge Quest product that would be more appropriate? We will add a lot or US history into our study next year but we won't be ignoring world history either. Or should I consider Veritas Press geography program, Legends and Leagues? TIA!
  13. Has anybody read these? I don't want to buy them for DD8 if they are poorly written. TIA!
  14. What is Texas Sampler? I found a variety of things on amazon.
  15. These are great resources! Thank you! DD will be in the third grade this year. And while I'm more worried about being chronologically correct than doing what the ISD does, I think it's reasonable to do TX history in 4th grade. That way I can spend more time on American history this year and then throw in all the native American stuff as well. I may go ahead and buy all the texts and as you said, "fold them in" as appropriate. But I think a small bit of TX history will fit in at the end of this year (SOTW III) but the majority will come into play next year.
  16. This year we will be continuing on in our history studies with SOTW III. I am already planning on adding a ton of American history to this spine. But for those of you who are from Texas, when did you add Texas history in? I noticed that the battle of the Alamo is covered towards the end of SOTW III but I could hardly fit Texas' rich history in one week. We will already have spent so much extra time on American history that I am thinking of saving the Alamo chapter and an extensive study of Texas history the following year as we start SOTW IV. Any thoughts? What did you do that worked well?
  17. Mexico is just a hop, skip, and jump away! What specific locations did you have in mind? We seem to have deals on airfare here in Texas to Mexico from time to time. I forgot about the warriors in China. My daughter is sort of obsessed with them right now as we go through SOTW I. She will go nuts!
  18. Any ideas for museums or exhibits pertaining to SOTWII time periods? We live in Texas but are willing to travel. Of course Europe would be ideal but I don't see that happening. :) Here is what I have thought of so far: The Cloisters NYC The Met armor exhibit NYC Medieval local fair Medieval Times dinner show local Shakespear in the park World showcase at EPCOT (norway, england, germany, and france focus on this time period somewhat) I'd love to get additional ideas. We are ready to hit the road we just need more destinations! :auto:
  19. September is a wonderful time to go! You may even find yourself there during EPCOT's food and wine festival. Without the crowds of summer you will be able to enjoy yourselves much more. We love it there that time of year. Magic Kingdom and EPCOT are our favorite parks. A tour plan does help so that you do not feel overwhelmed. There is so much to see that it helps to lay out ahead of time the things your family REALLY wants to experience. I love disboards.com and I listen to their podcast (pull up all their old shows and you can learn a lot!) found on itunes or there site wdwinfo.com. This show is called The dis unplugged. There is a couple on there originally from NO so you will feel right at home :) Keep us updated on your planning! We are headed there again in 72 days, not that I'm counting or anything! My next task is to work into what we are learning in SOTW with the EPCOT world showcase! Don't forget to sign up for mousesavers.com's newsletter which is always full of great deals.
  20. I must preface this by saying that I can make a trip to the mail box educational! :) That's just the way we are in this house. Last time we were at Walt Disney World my daughter was 2 1/2 years old and we used the epcot world showcase to study various countries (no specific time period in history) and their food/culture. We are headed there again (DD now 7) and I am looking for a way to line it up with our studies. At the time we are going she will have just finished SOTW 1 but not yet started 2. I have been several times and can think of nothing pertaining to the ancients except maybe in Japan and China. Can you guys think of anything I can tie in with SOTW 2. Maybe Norway and England? Thoughts? We are ready to take this homeschooling show on the road!:auto: TIA
  21. I just realized I misspelled "dilemma" in the title of my post! Sorry, it seems I can only edit my text but not the title of the thread.
  22. Doing 1st grade math really isn't the issue. Right now it's just a place-holder until we figure out a plan. That's why she has the additional 3rd grade workbook at her desk, because it takes her all of 5 minutes to do 1st grade math. I like the idea of doing the online class. I'm not familar with EPGY. Is that something she could do on a lap top any time of day? It would be great if she could do that in the classroom while the other kids are doing their math. I'd love to know more about their program. If something online doesn't work out then I think we will do the tutor after school. And yes, she would do the work for that during math class time. I just hate to pay for more school on top of private school. Of course we will do whatever we need to do. Thankfully our school is very accomadating and willing to work with us in any way they can. Thank you for all the replies. This really is helping my brainstorming process. She is our oldest child so we are really newbies to the world of school (beyond preschool :).
  23. My daughter spent her preschool years at a montessori school and because of that set up she was allowed to advance in math at her own pace. During her kindergarten year at the montessori school she was doing 3rd grade and even some 4th grade math with ease. Staying at the montessori school was not an option because this school did not offer higher grade levels. So we switched her over to a classical education school this year for 1st grade. Of course she is bored out of her mind in math. She has a 3rd grade math book to work on at her desk once she finishes the first grade work. And this keeps her busy but this is not a long term solution. We talked to her teacher about bumping her up to 2nd grade but her teacher felt like she would breeze through that as well and the 2nd grade teacher would have the same problem keeping her challenged. My daughter is just one of those kids that if she sees it once, she's got it. The teacher's solution was to tutor her after school and let her just take off on her own pace. That way she can do 5th grade math in the 2nd grade and we don't have to worry about constantly figuring out what grade to physically move her too each time. What are your thoughts? Do you think this is a good solution? I am in desperate need of wisdom!
  24. I just have to jump in on this conversation because I am a registered dietitan. And I must say you DO need animal fat! (Don't read that last sentence as yelling. I'm just excited because this is my favorite subject.) As a previous poster stated, there are many misconceptions about fat. And the composition of fat from grass-fed (natural) animal sources is different that conventional and so very beneficial. We eat tons of meat, butter, and raw milk and dairy products. Both DH and I has thin without dieting or watching what we eat. We do a conservative amount of grains but not to the point of adkins. Our diet is mostly meat, veggies, fruit, and some grains. And we are one of those families that rarely get sick. I could go on forever about this subject but I don't want to bore you all!
