  1. Sorry to bring up such an old post, but I decided to get Spelling through copywork and will start it toward the end of first grade. Wanted to update everyone. http://queenhomeschool.com/bookpage/bookframe.html'>http://queenhomeschool.com/bookpage/bookframe.html'>http://queenhomeschool.com/bookpage/bookframe.html'>http://queenhomeschool.com/bookpage/bookframe.html I plan to get Language Lessons for Little Ones to start at the beginning of first grade. http://queenhomeschool.com/bookpage/bookframe.html So finally I have 1st all planned. Yay!
  2. Horizon's TM do not do you much good in any grade IMO. There is no scripting and they will give directions such as "Teach bar graphs". There are books you can get that help all grade levels. I am looking into getting those.
  3. One more question. Age appropriate craft activities similar to Hideaways in History?
  4. Thanks Calming Tea, that helps me. I think I need to read over TWTM again because first grade LA decisions are really hard for me. And Jessica, I was in graphic design too, so now I am not so sure about LLVY lol. I think I am going with LLfor little ones. http://queenhomeschool.com/bookpage/bookframe.html I can't give either of you more points. :glare:
  5. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25648 I just asked this. HTH
  6. I would check out different Bible Translations yourself and see how easy they are to understand and then go from there. Scripture reading can be very difficult with a Bible that is hard to understand. The words might be read, but the overall meaning is lost. Have you thought about asking your family members what Bible they would use? Since this tie is important to you that is another thought.
  7. :iagree: Had to agree with this one. So many hands on fun ways to learn. We made numbers out of speghetti yesterday. She loved it.
  8. I have a Bible called Easy to Read Version published by World Bible Translation Center in Fort Worth, TX. I understand scriptures much better in this, and so does DD. I have to recommend "Learn from the Great Teacher". It is from Jehovah's Witnesses. www.watchtower.org It uses scriptures to teach lessons and answer questions. The Great Teacher is Jesus of course. Every child I know enjoys it. (Not so much the Bible stories) I would also love to hear how your ds decided to be a Christian.
  9. momof7 that was wonderful advice and I am keeping it to read over in the future. Can't leave you any more good rep.
  10. I think it was supposed to be good rep and marked neg by accident maybe? Could someone shed light on this?
  11. I have to fight with Emily when we do handwriting because that is when I insist she hold her pencil right. Other times I let it slide. Wondering if this could be a problem. I have some links on WHY we should hold our pencil correctly and I read them to her... now she fights it less. I can send them along if you think it may help. She is the same way writing stories and letters constantly, and I have people warning me not to start writing curriculum or spelling. It is hard to know what to do.
  12. Very good points!:leaving::lol: I did not want OP to feel bad for assigning it in the first place. My local PS K has them doing a lot of things that are not in the state requirements until first grade. But, they do not teach phonics in K. Their priorities are so well thought out!
  13. Children from Australia to Zimbabwe, Any children's or young people's Atlas (I have Kingfisher), A Child Like Me by DK, Material World http://www.winterpromise.com/children_world.html There is one book Children from Many Lands that would work nicely. These were also recommended to me in another thread: "Children Just Like Me: A Unique Celebration of Children around the World. It is full of colorful picture. It focuses one child from many countries around the world. It gives an idea about their school, environment, housing, clothes, food, and local animals. My kids love learning about other kids. The children in the book are 6-9 years old. The second book suggestion is a series of books. The books all start off with title Count your way through It teaches the number 1-10 in the language of that particular country. It gives a very general overview of the country's history, people, building, and environment. I was able to check both out at the library but my kids love The UNICEF Children Just like Me I am going to buy it with my next rainbow resources order." I am not familiar with A Child's Geography, but I know an Atlas along with one of the children's culture books should be great. That's what I am doing for 1st. :D
  14. In Public School Kindergarten they are having the kids copy what the teacher writes on a board. About 3 sentences. It is not unthinkable to ask it of a Kindergartner.
  15. Abeka starts cursive at 4 yrs old and they have books called writing with phonics (has words not just letters) which DD loved. They are fun and colorful and she got to color the pics with markers when she was done. You might look into those.
  16. Thanks for your help. I will not start either program until she is at least 6.5...we are starting first grade this summer when she turns 6 and I can't really determine ahead of time when I will feel she is ready for it. She writes sentences and stories all the time, so I am thinking she needs some kind of direction, though I want it to be gentle, not rigorous.
  17. I tried my best to search Trivium Academy's blog. I know it is in there somewhere. Here is my dilemma. I have decided to go with more of a CM approach. I plan to start Simply Spelling and Writing Tales for 3rd grade. I am worried she will not be prepared for either of them, so I want to do something gentle in 2nd grade to get her ready. I don't trust copywork alone as I feel like I will flub it up. Help?
  18. I started to get the K program but instead went through the books and picked about half of them. In the future, I plan to do the same thing, buying all of the History, but only half the read alouds and readers and get the IG used for 15-20 dollars so it doesn't seem like a waste. You could also buy the combined year (1+2, 3+4, Alt. 6) and then stretch it out to complete over 2 years if the crammed full schedule is a problem.
  19. Thanks for the suggestion. To what grade level does it apply?
  20. I am doing first grade handwriting with italic so that cursive will be an easier transition.
