  1. Update- I ended up getting having the procedure at the large clinic’s surgical center instead of at the hospital’s outpatient surgical center yesterday. The bill from the clinic’s surgical center was $3285 (instead of $24,000 for hospital’s outpatient surgical center) but with the negotiated insurance rate discount and then having to pay 20%, I ended up paying $313 for the surgical center instead of $3800! I still can’t believe the difference in the price. Maybe the majority of people using this large heathcare provider have HMO’s so they pay the same price regardless if it is at the hospital or clinic’s surgical center? I had to pay a dr’s fee (20% of it) which was around $150 and I have no idea if I will be charged for the anesthesia because the anesthesiologist was a clinic provider not an outside anesthesiologist. So I think I ended up saving around $3500! Most importantly the procedure went well. It was so much better than being awake the three previous times doctors tried to remove the iud. Also clinic’s surgical center was just remodeled and the healthcare providers were all so supportive. End of update- what follows is my original post. I am wondering if this is reasonable. I need a hysteroscopy to remove an embedded IUD with general anesthesia. The anesthesiologist is in network and my 20% will be $100. The ob/gyn is in network and her fee is around $160. I thought, great that those fees are reasonable but then I called the surgical center. The surgery at an outpatient hospital surgical center is estimated to take one hour and their fee is $24,000. My insurance will pay a negotiated rate of around $19,000 so with my co-pay of 20% I will end up paying around $3800. This just seems so excessive for the surgical center for an easy one hour procedure.
  2. Thank you. This was helpful. It is good to know that he should have known "constant coefficient" . I went back and couldn't find anything that would explain this to him in the materials he was supposed to review for this lesson. Since everyone chimed in that this is something that seems to be pretty basic, I just requested a refund for this course. Thanks everyone!
  3. I would like to know if this is a poorly worded question or not? So I signed up my son for Silicon Valley High School Integrated Math 2 (the short story is that it satisfies the geometry requirement for UC's and he is actually using a different book for Algebra). He was on his second lesson and on a quiz the question was: Multiply the following binomials. Write in descending order of degree. What is the coefficient of the third term? (3x + 2)(7x -8) So, he solved it writing down 21x ^2 -24x +14x -16. Then he combined like terms to make 21x^2 -10x -16. So he looked at the question to find the coefficient in th third term but there is no coefficient of the third term because -16 is a constant. So he went back and wrote 14. He got the answer wrong so he emailed his teacher explaining how he did the problem and how he was looking for a coefficient not a constant. The teacher wrote back: The third term is the constant. The third term is considered to be -16 x^0. The zero property of exponents states that x^0 = 1. We normally don't write -16 x^0 because of the zero product property....so we just write -16. So -16 x^0 = -16 (1) = -16. I hope the explanation helps you. My son is annoyed because he feels like the teacher is not understanding what he is trying to explain and won't admit it isn't a good question. So, is this question clear or is it confusing?
  4. So sorry. I have had the same experience. I meet a new mom and think we hit it off and get invited to do something. Then find out it is a mlm party so I end up making an excuse why I can’t go.
  5. Sorry. Still amazed they came to where your car was. Terrible your plates were stolen but good the police came and took a report. I really wish it were like that where I live.
  6. I am fascinated that police came to your house to take a report for a stolen license plate. I live in CA and now police here tell you to report things online. A friend was held up at gunpoint returning to her car after a sporting event at a stadium. When she ran to her car to drive off (luckily she had her keys in her pocket when they took her purse) they shattered her drivers side window trying to get her car in LA. Not even then did anyone come to take her report in person.
  7. To apply to the University of California or Cal State schools you need 3 years of math and they prefer 4 years. So for high school he has taken 1. Algebra taken in middle school) 2. Geometry through a UC online approved high school (finished the summer before 9th so for sure counts as a high school course). 3. 1 CC semester of intermediate algebra (counts as a year high school class) in 9th 4. 1 CC semester of trig (counts as one year long high school class) in 9th 5. CC stats (counts as year long high school class) first semester of 10th. So he has the equivalent of 4-5 high school math clases according to the UC’s. According to the CC, Statistics meets the math requirement to transfer to UC’s or cal state. No other math is required (depending on your major). So in my son’s mind he can be done with math because he has finished all the high school math he needs plus the math he needs if he goes to a CC and transfers. I just don’t think finishing math halfway through 10th grade is enough math.
  8. He really doesn’t know. He has enjoyed 2 CC anthro classes but I think it has more to do with the fact that the professor was really interesting. He also likes history and is taking a CC history class in the spring.
  9. It’s a California public Community College so the class is transferable to any UC or cal state. If he never takes another math class he can use this stats class to fulfill the math requirement as a transfer student.
  10. My 10th grader took Alg in 7th and geometry in 8th (he actually finished both semesters the summer before 9th so I think it counts as high school credit). Then dual enrolled in a CC in 9th grade for intermediate algebra 1st semester and trig 2nd semester. He just finished CC stats. Even though he has A’s in all of these math classes he says he isn’t into math and doesn’t want to take any more math classes for now (and not sure about 11th or 12th). So I think that counts as 5 or at least 4 math classes. I was thinking he would take college algebra/precalculus and calculus but now I am not so sure. I think stopping math after the first semester of 10th grade isn’t something colleges want to see.
  11. My 10th grader just finished this past week a dual enrollment CC Statistics class. I am a little dubious to how much he actually learned even though he got an A. I also am not sure in 3-4 years when he is in a 4 year college if he will have retained anything. If he ends up majoring in anything that requires a statistics class can he retake this class if he goes to a UC or CalState?
  12. It’s an issue with orthographic processing. Some kids just have a really hard time visually imprinting what words looks like when they spell. My son had amazing phonological awareness. He could rhyme at an early age easily, blend words, segment words but could not spell common words such as: they, was, because, any word with a contraction, etc. He often misspelled words differently through one paragraph. He also reversed letters. The only thing that helped was Apples and Pears spelling. Do a search here and read the reviews. I slugged through 100 lessons with him when he was in third and fourth grade. He still isn’t the best speller BUT he now can spell common words correctly.
  13. What area of school rights? anything more specific you can provide? Really I can think of only two guaranteed school rights in California. 1) No school fees in California or mandatory fees for books, field trips, etc. 2) if your child is in special Education or has a 504 plan are you guaranteed rights; such as you are supposedly guaranteed a free an appropriate public education. One very important right is due process so there are ways to file complaints with the state or file for due process and/or mediation. Are you talking about a general education student? Often you have to advocate by being vocal and thinking ahead of what roadblock you will find.
  14. My two kids were in the middle school level. One if my kids would turn in homework late so his grade was lowered. If homework was turned in on time their grades were always 100%.
  15. My 13 and 15 year olds are getting paid to be junior umpires for little league baseball games. They worked 5 hours (8:15-10:45 then 2:15-4:45) this past Saturday. The 15 year old had a guitar lesson in between games. I thought 5 hours of work a day was a good balance for a 15 year old. Enough time to learn responsibility but not too much time to lose focus or not have time to do other things.
  16. In California she would be in 7th grade. CA now has a Sept 1st cut off date to enter K by 5. Your family is going through a lot, I would definitely keep her back and wait a year for high school.
  17. In California a law, AB 705, was written that says community college students can’t be placed into remedial (non 4 -year transferable classes) math and English classes. So even if you don’t meet the pre-requisites a student can enroll in college algebra/statistics and English 101. I can see both sides of this debate but what concerns me now is that many California community colleges are going a step further and are getting rid of all math classes below college algebra/stats. My 9th grader took a dual enrollment intermediate algebra course in the fall and moved onto trig this semester. In 10th grade he will most likely take a semester of precalculus in the fall then start calculus in the spring. I was planning on having his younger brother follow the same pathway but now I noticed there are no intermediate algebra classes offered at all in any of the three closest community colleges to us. Combined they probably offered at least 30 sections of intermediate algebra last fall but now offer none. I don’t understand how this is possible when certain programs such as nursing require intermediate algebra. I suppose they will make students take college algebra instead? So if you are are planning on having your kids dual enroll in math classes in CA make sure you look at your local CC to see if lower levels of math are still being offered.
  18. In the past when elderly people became that incapacitated, they rarely lived long. Life expectancy was much shorter as well.
  19. The breeding part is no joke! They are now adult. I asked my son why some looked longer. He told me to look closely because a whole bunch of them are attached to each other so they probably are mating. My son says he could keep them going until next year and this of a different science fair project for them. But I would rather find somewhere else for them to go.
  20. My son just completed a science fair project involving brine shrimp. The good news is that he won 1st place for 7th grade at his school, the bad news is he has at least 100 left over brine shrimp. Anyone have any ideas of what to do with them?
  21. I am so sorry Dawn. I have worked at several schools and having an awful admin is just the worst. I was involuntary transferred from working with a really good principal who tried to fight to keep me to a school where no one wanted to work at because the principal was so awful. I literally tried to hide from her. I walked way around the school to avoid walking by her office, tried not to say much or respond to her, etc. I never understood who in the district supported her but she somehow was really powerful and got what she wanted. The following year I signed up to work at a year round school and told people I needed that schedule just to change schools. The awful principal tried to get me to stay but I just kept saying I needed a different schedule. Have you tried emailing back to document? So when she asks you to do something that would take 12 hours in one day or insults you. Then you email back something like- I just want to clarify what you would like me to prioritize since I am doing the jobs of two other people as well as my own. You mentioned this….., or you said this…. But …. At the 504 meeting this happened … So you have a record of it happening and having to do more than your assigned job.
  22. Thanks for the resources. He just started playing around 6 weeks ago and has been practicing non stop. He loves his weekly lesson and has been watching Youtube videos to learn some songs. When I mentioned taking a class for school credit he liked the idea. Good idea about summer camp. Any ideas on rock camps?
  23. My 14 year old has started playing the electric guitar and is taking a private 30 minute lesson once a week. He is interested in taking an online class as well. Does anyone know anything about BYU high school guitar class, or ASU digital prep guitar, or Educational Advantage guitar class?
  24. If you feel comfortable, you should just name the sports because you would get more specific feedback. So many youth sports are now pay to play. It costs a lot of money to play travel, pay for private coaching or extra coaching, go to tournaments and camps in order to get recruited to play in college. I posted before about boys and puberty, but I think it bears repeating. For an 11-year-old so much in the next two to three years is going to be based on size and puberty. Boys who go through puberty early and have all that testosterone earlier than their peers are just going to have an easier time making travel/club teams, school teams, etc. Did your older son mature early? Is the younger one tall for his age?
