  1. Just found a Disney + show in Spanish called "The Low Tone Club" about a high school in Colombia that specializes in music staring Carlos Vives (Colombian singer who has sold millions of records, sings pop as well as traditional music -vallenato and title song of Disney movie Encanto). I really liked the first episode. My son said it was a little "cringy" but I think he liked it. He said he would watch the second episode with me this afternoon when he gets back from surfing.
  2. I hope your surgery goes well. After your surgery are you going to be non-weight bearing for weeks or will you have a walking boot and can put a little bit of weight on it? Today I found a paint by number that I had during the Covid lockdowns. I did a couple of paintings during COVID but have one I never started. So I am starting on that today. https://www.amazon.com/Dimensions-PBN-14x11-HibiscusHumigbird-None/dp/B002MCGOJA/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=dimensions%2Bpaint%2Bby%2Bnumber&qid=1681587254&sr=8-8&th=1
  3. The transcripts aren't automatically sent. My son has to send the transcript to his high school, then it takes the counselor a while and a few emails and/or visits from my son to put it on his transcript if he takes a CC class that is not from our local CC. It is a pain for the counselor because she has to figure out what is the exact corresponding local CC class so that it somehow gets coded correctly. It took my son over a year to get his CC Film class onto his high school transcript and he finished a History of Modern Americas class last semester, turned in the transcript two months ago and it still isn't on his transcript.
  4. No. My son can’t tell his counselor the real reason he wants to hedge his bet because the school is very strict about not taking teacher requests. He has to get his counselor to sign off on the dual enrollment History class for the fall. Once he does that they won’t enroll him in APUSH for the fall. Summer is different because counselors sign DE forms and then some students don’t get classes or their summer plans change. His counselor signed DE forms for 2 different CC for this summer. If he doesn’t submit his transcripts when the summer class ends the school wouldn’t know that he took a class or not.
  5. He might take a semester long CC dual enrollment US History class this summer. Since it is summer it will take 4-8 weeks depending in the CC. Then if he gets the teacher he wants he would take a year long AP history class. Other parents have commented that this teacher is one of the best teachers at the school. It’s the type of teacher that is very challenging but teaches so well students rise to the occasion and then do extremely well not just on the AP test but in future classes as well. In comparison, if my son gets into the US history class at our local CC, rate my professor indicates the class is not rigorous at all but at least it is interesting.
  6. Learning Spanish in High School can be challenging if your goal is really to be fluent. Spanish is a heritage language for us and I have tried different ways to get my kids to learn Spanish. My oldest had hearing and speech issues so we ended up dropping speaking to him in Spanish and only spoke to him in English when he was in preschool and elementary school. He became interested in learning Spanish in middle school so when I homeschooled him in 7th grade I paid for a native Spanish speaker to spend 4 hours a day with my kids while I worked part-time). After 4-5 months I realize they actually weren't learning that much but were more motivated. They were doing Homeschool Spanish Academy as well. My younger son was not really motivated and preferred to speak English. So just because you get a native speaker doesn't mean that they will progress more. I think it is just a slog so we keep trying programs, and I had them spend three weeks in Costa Rica in a language school so they keep advancing but are nowhere near fluent speakers. Perhaps it our experience is unique (although I doubt it is), there can be a level of... well, let's say disdain when your skin color is brown and you are speaking Spanish in the United States. So my kids have heard people shout "go back to Mexico", "why don't you speak English", etc. However, if your kids are blond in a place like a Mexican restaurant and speaking Spanish, people tend to think it is great. So you get different feedback on how acceptable it is to speak Spanish based on how you look and I think kids internalize that. I am glad that my oldest is now really motivated to learn Spanish since the rest of his life people will assume he speaks Spanish based on how he looks and his last name. I am really pleased that my oldest is now really motivated and what has helped him is: listening to music in Spanish. He finds youtube videos that have the lyrics in English and Spanish and watches his favorites over and over Watching TV series in Spanish (has been watching Narcos). I think Disney plus has some teen shows from Argentina. I sometimes have him watch a show that is called Rosa de Guadalupe which is a complete story- beginning, middle, end in one hour. Some of the topics are a bit mature but I find ones that have to do with high schoolers and have him watch. It is on telemundo or univision on regular TV most nights. Believe it or not a program that is actually designed for retirees called Warren Hardy. The emphasis is on communication. After buying a ton of programs I am really amazed at how effective this program is.
  7. The issue is if he doesn't take the CC class and gets the teacher that isn't good at all, then he will be required by his school to take a US history class in 11th grade- either regular or AP. If he takes the CC class and then gets the underwhelming teacher he can show his counselor that he already has credit for US History and can drop the class.
  8. The point is a chance to take a rigorous class from a really good teacher where extensive writing is required I am not optimistic a 4 to 6 week online CC will be at the level of a quality AP class in person. I care more about being able to take quality classes. I suppose I am just wondering how it would look to colleges to repeat a CC with an AP class.
  9. How much Spanish do your girls already know? Are they at very beginning level? Have they taken any Spanish in school?
  10. My son is in 10th grade and there are 2 AP US history teachers for next year-one is supposed to be challenging but amazing. Students do a lot of writing in the class, the teacher is inspiring, and the students do well on the AP test. He co-teaches with the AP Lang teacher so whatever they are studying in History they are reading from that era. My son really enjoys history and is looking forward to taking this class. However, there is another teacher who teaches one section of AP History and it’s supposedly not worth taking because allegedly it is not rigorous and instead is disorganized so it ends up being frustrating for students because they realize they are missing out by not getting the other teacher. My son is in an science academy at this high school so he needs to take extra classes. If he gets into the amazing teacher’s class he wants to take APUSH, but if he doesn’t then he would rather take a dual enrollment CC history class this summer. He won’t find out who is teacher is until the day before school. So to hedge his bet he wants to take a CC history this summer and if he gets the teacher he doesn’t want he can then drop the APUSH class at his high school. With all that in mind, can a student take a dual enrollment class in US History and then take an APUSH class? He is interested in UC schools and already has around 25 CC units.
  11. I fractured my ankle this past Saturday. So far I have: binge watched Night Agent on Netflix Researched hearing aids for my mother (and my hearing is now borderline so it was good to start researching) Deleted all the photos and videos on my iPhone and iPad that I didn’t want to keep. I bought a knee rolling scooter which has been great! Urgent care gave me crutches and I never realized how tough they are to use the first few times to walk more than a few feet. My arms were getting so tired! https://www.amazon.com/kneeling-scooter/s?k=kneeling+scooter The only issue is my 14 year is having fun riding it all over the house and backyard so I sometimes have to yell to bring it back.
  12. The Sierras have a massive snowpack and the storms have messed up so many roads so by early June Sequoia & Kings Canyon might not yet be completely open. There is also flooding predicted to come so Yosemite might have issues as well in early June. If they are flying into Vegas have they considered some Utah National parks- Zion and Bryce aren’t too far away? North Rim of Grand Canyon? Joshua Tree then visit San Diego and try and fly out from there?
  13. I am now surprised when I go into a business like a supermarket, coffee shop, clothing shop, gardening center and no prop 65 sign is listed. It’s become absolutely meaningless. Because of liability almost everything I buy in CA has a prop 65 warning. My husband bought seafood last week and they had a warning. I guess because all oceans have heavy metal in them anything that comes from the ocean has to have a prop 65 warning. Prop 65 warnings is usually put on anything that is proven to contain POTENTIAL carcinogens (this includes anything without extensive studies to prove it isn’t) REGARDLESS of concentration and risk to health. It’s become meaningless except for attorneys who have figured out how to make money suing because prop 65 says anyone can sue in the public interest even though no one has been injured in anyway.
  14. Did the note say what frequencies and at what decibels she failed? Did it indicate both ears or one? My oldest has a mild conductive hearing loss in one ear. He has three sets of ear tubes, ruptured his eardrum twice, and still seems to always have fluid in one ear. The tricky thing about school screenings is that at least in California they only screen at 3 frequencies 1k, 2k & 4K and you just need to hear 25 decibels to pass. When I take my son to an audiologist they have consistently told me 25 decibels is a slight to mild hearing loss and that children should be hearing better than 25 decibels. Then your results are the lowest time you can hear 50 percent of the time! When my son is tested in a group at school he says it takes so long because he is so inconsistent and I think he just ends up guessing and raising his hand and/or tries to time it or can see the screener pressing the button. So he passes his hearing screening at the doctors office and school but fails at the audiologist (his hearing ranges from 25-35 decibels in his bad ear).
  15. Most teachers are no longer willing to step between students or break up fights. My husband teaches at a “tough” middle school where there are numerous fights. There is even an Instagram page fights @——-MS. When he started teaching 20 years ago he would break up fights (he wrestled in high school so I think he knew how to safely try and break up fights so you aren’t trying to restrain one student while the other can still hit). Back then students fighting would get suspended, if there was blood the the police were called, kids often had probation officers who were called, parents were more likely to answer phone calls, and many times students would be transfer schools. Now- nothing happens. They have a restorative justice session. So he feels why take the risk when nothing happens.

    Pray NOW

I am so sorry. It’s just so tragic.
  17. Since teens can get a prescription for birth control without a parents consent knowledge then I don’t see how they can require a teen to turn in her birth control pills. I absolutely would not turn them in to the school doctor. Logistically you can’t easily turn in birth control pills early. I would however turn in the ocd pills.
  18. I made the mistake of getting the shingles vaccine at the same time as getting the tetanus vaccine a day before my birthday. I was miserable with two sore arms all day on my birthday.
  19. I would try emailing your doctor indicating that you are concerned because the The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recommends: Intrahepatic cholestasis of Pregnancy Bile acids ≥100 micromol/L: 36w0d Bile acids <100 micromol/L: 36w0d to 39w0d | Delivery <36 weeks may be required depending on clinical findings and lab values So why am I not going to be induced early? By emailing the doctor and putting it in writing it is harder for the doctor to brush off. Sorry you are going through this.
  20. Yes!!! This is so true. I sent this message through my online chart a couple of days ago: ME: I am scheduled to have a surgery /hysteroscopy next Thursday for an embedded IUD. While your fee and the anesthesiologist fees are reasonable I just received the hospital outpatient surgical center fee estimate of $24,000 of which I would pay $3,700. Are there other options besides surgery? Is there a danger of the IUD perforating my uterus if it stays in? Thank you. I received this response: DOCTOR: Wow that does seem expensive. Maybe call the Hospital and review this fee? It is a foreign object so there is always risk of it causing an infection and potentially migrating through the uterus. These risks are small. Please let us know how you would like to proceed. Take care,
  21. So I spent the day calling to cancel the surgery and researching. If this surgery were for one of my kids I would just go ahead and proceed but I just can't justify spending so much money on me for a medical procedure that isn't urgent. I ended up speaking to a really nice person who is one of the ob/gyn surgical schedulers (of course, I am kicking myself for not catching her name and writing it down). She seemed frustrated on my behalf that it was going to cost so much. She said that there is a possibility that another surgical center that this large clinic actually owns can be used but it is not next to where the ob/gyn offices are. They are across the street from the hospital and the hospital outpatient surgical center. She said it is obviously more convenient for the ob/gyn doctors to just walk over to the surgical center from their office or the hospital to perform the one hour procedure. She explained the ob/gyn department only gets certain blocks of time at their own clinic's surgical center every couple of months. She said she would call over there and ask how much they charged using the same CPT (procedure code) and then called me back. Using their own in patient surgical center the fee is $3700 for the same procedure! She was appalled that the same surgery costs $24000 at one surgical center and $3700 at another. I kept asking if the $3700 was my copay and she kept saying no- it is the total fee- so since I have to pay 20% then I would pay $740 instead of around $3800!!!!! So she isn't sure she can make it happen but she said she is sending emails to justify that due to financial reasons I should be approved to get surgery at their own surgical center. So I am praying it can happen!
  22. I wish I could just do the same and have the hysteroscopy in office but that wasn't an option I was given by my ob/gyn.
  23. The $24,000 fee doesn’t include the surgical fee or the fee for the anesthesiologist. Those are two separate fees but they are reasonable. This outpatient hospital surgical center is in-network. My insurance supposedly will pay around $19,000 just for the center so I will be responsible for 20% or $3,800.
