  1. I love ours. We have a Yakima Rocketbox, although I'm not sure what model. It's wider and shorter and I can install/remove it myself on top of our Odyssey. It's a must when all 5 of us travel together (the dogs in their kennel take up room on the interior). We put stuff up there that we're not going to need until our destination...usually snow boots, heavy winter stuff we probably won't need while we're driving all day. We've never had it leak from the top or the bottom. I have fears of the wind catching it and our stuff spread all over the interstate, but it hasn't happened! It's very secure, and I've traveled cross country with them, no problem. We've had a Thule and it was also very secure, but it was a 2-man job due to it's size and we 'gifted' it to a neighbor before our last move. The only problem is storage when we're not using it. I wish we had a garage with some sort of overhead rack system but we don't. Because we use it so often and put the $$$ into it, it does get stored in the garage. My parents stored their carrier (from Sears) outside and it only lasted a few years due to weathering. I've also done the soft sided carrier (roof bag or something like that). I was a lot more nervous about that one, I felt like we needed more bungee cords and I ended up putting our gear in garbage bags before packing it because I was worried about stuff getting wet. It stayed dry, but I've only used it for one trip...it seemed less secure because it didn't have a keyed lock, although you could probably zip tie it or put a small padlock on it to deter snoopers.
  2. Three thoughts: 1. If she's drinking that much, maybe she's not actually hungry during meals and therefore not eating. 2. If she's not used to staying up late, maybe her internal clock is out of whack, leading to her not being hungry at expected times. 3. My 9 year old would focus on her bug-bitten hand and then everything would revolve around that bite and she'd get mopey and homesick, etc. Could she just be homesick? Could your daughter be sad enough to not eat during meals? At our house no fever, no pains means my kid would be there till Friday. Hope she enjoys the last few days of camp!
  3. Johnsonville Brats Sliced Finlandia cheese guacamole 100 calorie packs Starbucks VIA for husband bacon bits naan (we use them for 'tiny pizza night') Watts Brothers organic sweet peas (until they were on the recalled list :glare: ) Vinegar (we use it as fabric softener and descaling the coffee maker) Oxyclean & Clorox color safe (BUT only when they're on sale!! ) Unfortunately our Costco's fruits & veggies are so picked over and seem to age quickly after purchase, very few organic selections too. We don't buy FFV there :(
  4. I don't mind the chitchat. Between the kids, 2 dogs, the traffic, and the weather, there's ALWAYS something to find common ground on/complain about. I avoid haircuts because the lady I usually go to is really rough on my hair! When she combs out the tangles after a wash, she starts at the top and just rips the comb through. (Start at the ends and work up, lady!!) I've even asked her if she wants me to do it because she starts at the top every time. I like her coloring and cut but my head is so tender after an appointment with her...and I'm a redhead which doesn't that mean I'm extra tough handling pain?? Today my hair appointment was with someone else and surprise, my head is not sore! And the chitchat was much more enjoyable.
  5. My oldest was not ready to deal with her bikini area and felt very self-conscious in regular suits. We went with these bottoms in black: https://www.amazon.com/Maui-Rippers-Womens-Boardshorts-Black/dp/B00E1WVEV2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1467507967&sr=8-4&keywords=maui+rippers+women%27s+boardshorts and this as a top in blue: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LAFORG2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I liked the bottoms and top so much that I got a set for myself (green bottoms, black top). We try not to stand next to each other at the pool :thumbup1: Wish I had something more affordable to share! Good luck!
  6. Note to self: start storing algebra books and extra batteries/flashlights in kids' bedrooms. That is truly adorable. :hurray:
  7. I'm using this one for my rising 9th grader: http://www.amazon.com/2016-2017-Academic-Planner-Management-Students/dp/B008VV0DC0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s02 I like that it has time blocks for after school. The only problem is that she will be doing a few semester long classes and so we'll have to edit the column along the side. The front and back cover is plastic (not just coated cardstock) so it looks durable but DD was initially disappointed that she would't be able to doodle on the front. :001_rolleyes: There's a pocket in the back as well. This is for my rising 7th grader: http://www.amazon.com/Undated-Student-Organizer-Middle-SO-8/dp/B00Q4Z946G?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s02 It looks a lot like a teacher's lesson planner but offers plenty of room for him to write stuff in, and a double pocket at the back. It really is a student planner though, written to the student! Cover is a little less durable than the one above but the price was right.
  8. Ok, I may have misvoted. I voted that I would be embarrassed that day but I wouldn't think about it next week. HOWEVER, I still remember with extreme embarrassment the time in 8th grade gym class when I farted during situps. It's a basic bodily function, and it probably shows that the yoga move was truly releasing all your stress ;)
  9. I have been equally dismayed by the amount of profanity and sexual references. I subscribed because I liked a few G-rated articles last summer and now I'm stashing them deep in the recycling bin so the kids don't come across them and start reading. Makes me miss the Saturday Evening Post my parents subscribed to in the 80's.
  10. We put our tree up the 12th or so of December, then went to my parents' for a week for Christmas, and got back right before New Years, so it still feels good to have the tree up right now. The multi-colored lights cheer me up. The only down side is it seems like the twinkle lights give off a bit of heat and make the room a few degrees warmer...and that is the room where the thermostat for the whole house is! It says it's 68 in there but 64 in the rest of the house. Anyway, we'll probably take the tree down in a week but might try some light decor like SerenityNow suggested. Great idea :)
  11. I second with test taking skills, but T/F questions are difficult to answer, even for me...do I focus on the "always, never, sometimes" part of the sentence or do I focus on the vocabulary word part of the sentence. It's a tricky bit of logic sometimes! So I would probably turn those T/F into word bank questions. And are tests the only part of his grade? If yes, then include his attitude, his definitions being finished (as best he can do at his age), or daily narrations as part of his grade...then scale back the testing portion to maybe 10% of his overall grade. Our excel gradebook has it where I can play around with how much weight I give to each area of a subject...like I don't do history tests with my DD9 so it's all attitude (25%), narration (25%), reading library books about our topic/discussions (25%), and some sort of weekly or monthly project (25%)...eventually I'll work in outlining/main idea work. This is just what I would do...If I feel like the knowledge is reaching the kid's brain and the TEST is what is the problem, then we change the test while teaching test taking skills. Sometimes what's covered on prepared tests is not what I want the child to take away from the chapter anyway, you know? Hope things improve for you, for DD9 we still read her tests outloud together so no tiny important words get skipped ;)
  12. I'm more excited about the bone broth than I was for hot turkey on Thanksgiving. Alas, I haven't put mine to simmer yet because I'm out of celery and I prefer to add it to my broth. Husband is out of town, pukey kid, and Black Friday means that Mr. Tom will have to wait to have his bones boiled. I also need to buy more mason jars to store the product. Also, I'm thinking about doing two crockpots (splitting the bones between the two) because that's a lot of carcass for one crockpot. We had a 15 lb bird so not huge but I'm trying to maximize the amount of broth I get.
  13. This is the main reason my KA sits in the corner of the counter. (I don't know what else I would put in that corner anyway, because it is pretty deep.) I did use it on Thanksgiving to do my one-hour dinner roll recipe but I don't remember the last time I used it. I do make my own bread but prefer to knead it myself. So many other recipes I've tried with the KA have been a pain to make because there's a layer of un-mixed stuff where the attachment doesn't reach. And I noticed with my rolls on Thursday that I had to put at least 4 cups of flour in before stuff started getting mixed around. Any small batches or small recipes would be too shallow to be mixed. I use a whisk or electric hand mixer. I would probably get rid of my KA but my mom gave it to me as a newlywed and she does use it when she visits. She is devoted to hers.
  14. OP, are you me?? I just got my first StitchFix yesterday too! And inside was...a pair of pants, 3 tops, and a necklace! I did specify that I'm always cold so they included a cardigan and a cowl sweater ( :ack2: ) but I was pleased that the stylist responded to my request. The top they included is such a pretty color, so I may keep that. I'm undecided on the cardigan...it's long enough it feels piratey to me...and it's HANDWASH/LAY FLAT TO DRY..and it's black and we have a white dog (I seem to be talking myself out it). The cowl neck sweater--nope, mentally I just can't do a cowl neck. The necklace is just going to snag whatever I would wear it with so it's going back. But the pants?? I LOVE the pants. Wow. And they're machine wash/dry. Can't wait to see what I get next month!
  15. Love the Jockey Elance...very soft material! I got the French cut (ooh la la!) in my normal size and they are really LONG, like above my belly button and showing above my pants if my shirt is short. I was so impressed with the softness, I went back to Kohl's and got the bikini--favorite underwear, hands down :)
  16. When we lived in Kitsap County we were in Poulsbo. Very cute town, crime was lower, very walkable. We didn't travel to Seattle that much, but the Bainbridge Island ferry was what we used...although BI ferry would also back up just like in Bremerton...pretty much at peak times, all ferry traffic will be a challenge. :/ I think you can bring your bicycle onto the ferry but I don't know how that works...would be great during summer, longer daylight hours with tourists clogging up vehicle traffic. Bainbridge Island is pretty convenient to Seattle but not to the rest of Kitsap County, and it is $$$. Makes me miss WA, all this ferry talk :) Good luck!
  17. I like it today but only because I forgot to set the clock before I went to bed...when I woke up at almost 9, it was really only 8. That meant more time to clean before a friend comes over this afternoon! Usually I don't care for dark evenings because I don't like driving at night...my eyes seem to play tricks on me. Driving at night and when it's raining is double  . I love long summer evenings.
  18. Completely could have written your post, Garga! I feel like I'm trying to cram everything into my 8th grader! There's so little time!! ;) Last year was a good year academically for us, but I was really burnt out by May (somehow held it together that long!). When I planned this year I built in 8 weeks of steady schooling and then a full week off. We only finish a few weeks ahead of public school, but I felt it was worth it. During that week we will do no school, and the kids won't have any projects/papers to work on. They may read whatever they want and I won't mentally cringe because it's not educational. It will all be on hold. I'm hoping it will help to relax me and prevent me spinning myself up. Our first break week starts on Oct. 19, and I'm really excited for a rest. My original plan was to schedule field trips, but I only have one in mind right now. Hope you can find the joy in your classroom again :)
  19. I didn't even know this existed!! Awesome! And I'm listening to Everything 80s. :thumbup1:
  20. We finished The Willoughbys last week. DD9 (and whoever is in the room) is listening to me read The Little Princess. Based on her asking me to read the servants' words in proper English so she can understand them, we may move onto The Secret Garden. She read it herself for fun but it sounds like she skipped whatever the servants had to say. We may also be reading The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan, which is probably not your typical read aloud! Last night, I was trying to get my son interested in something new and so I read the first few chapters out loud last night as a teaser. He grudgingly listened and seemed to enjoy it but we'll see if it continues.
  21. Small kitchen, laminate floors. 2 big rubber-backed rugs at garage door and french doors, small rubber-backed at the fridge to absorb water/ice drips from the water-in-the-door system, small (not big enough!) rug in front of sink. If I were to add a runner length rug along the sink/dishwasher/garbage drawer is that too many rugs? The kitchen is pretty compact and it would appear like 80% of the work area perimeter would be covered by rugs. Do I just need some afghan-style teapot cozies to complete the old lady look? :P I'm tired of stepping through water drips at the sink and dishwasher, yet tired of telling the kids to wipe up water drips that can only be seen from one (which happens to be MY) angle. More rugs=harder to sweep the floor and it's not getting done much as it is :blushing:
  22. I didn't read all the responses here, but in our local library it would be available to kids. They put ALL the nonfiction together in one giant nonfiction section--fairy tales are right next to grownup topics. It's up to the user/parent to edit out what may or may not be appropriate. Very frustrating to me. The book may be helpful or entertaining for adults but it makes the library not seem as family friendly as it once did.
  23. I won't have a cat again. We had a neutered male for 13 years. I was fine with him in general but once he died, my life got a lot easier and less hairy. -no cat house smell -no litter box smell in the basement -got my storage area back, it had previously been the litter box closet -no cat hair on my bed/pillow/every item of black clothing I own/floating in the air -no stinky cat food sitting around all day (vet recommended wet food as kitty aged) -no cat illnesses that seem to always present as puking on my bed or peeing outside the litter box -no household moves with kitty (we are military and move every 2-3 years...cross country travel with a cat is not fun!) -no yowling at 3am -no racing me up/down the stairs and tripping me (!!) My parents have taken in an outdoor cat, gradually over the last few years. The cat wakes my dad up at 5am, gets her treats, and then spends a few hours being let in and out of the house. She sleeps on my mom, scratches her when startled from her lap, and now there's a litter box in the basement...and I'm not sure the box gets the attention it should, due to my mom's mobility issues. I understand my parents may be lonely with all of us living farther away, but I'd much rather see them get a calm dog that would alert to strangers or scare away snoopers. (They're out in the country, petty crimes are on the rise.)
  24. 47 orders in the last 6 months And thanks to school ordering and summer birthdays: 15 orders in the last 30 days. We have one more birthday in August, thankfully I think I'm done ordering school stuff.
