  1. I have been using Abeka Language gr 5, my daughter is doing everything else at 6th grade level which she is in. I don't know whether Language is necessary or not till 12th grade. I heard analytical grammar can be completed in 10-12 weeks with a weekly review so you can have more time for literature. Does anyone with experience have a child with trouble forgetting since it ends at 8th grade or should English be continued clear till 12th? I also was not very good in english in school. Or I could have her try to do Rod and Staff english again, but she didn't enjoy because writing everything on a separate piece of paper. But I guess I could make her do this. Any suggestions please!!
  2. I have been using Rod and Staff 6th grade reader. Is this enough? Besides letting her pick her own books? Do I need to do Literature studies like Total language plus or Abeka so she will understand literary understanding of these works? Can I use christian books or magazines like: Voice of the martyrs, God's smuggler, George Mueller, Stories for the heart, Trials and triumps, In his steps instead or Do I ever need to add in Shakespeare, or the common literature studies in higher grades?
  3. I have never did a writing program for my 6th grade year old daughter. I need to implement one. I've heard great things about IEW. It seems a little expensive, but I need help teaching writing and understanding it myself. Meaningful composition is cheaper, is this all I would need to teach writing? Would I understand myself to teach my daughter. Understanding writing is christian based and I like that, but know nothing about it. Does it teach everything from 2nd-12th grade? I have no knowledge about writing. In school I did poorly in writing. I want her to know how to outline, write reports and all that goes along those lines. Please help.
  4. I have been using Rod and Staff math gr 6 and we are halfway through. Should I continue with Rod and Staff math 7 or switch to teaching textbooks? As a parent teaching Rod and Staff Math is getting harder for me. I either want to go with a DVD or Cd or someone else to teach the math that is getting too hard for myself to teach. Please recommend which you prefer and why.
  5. I need to know I have a 6th grader who passes spelling every week using BJU 6th grade spelling, but in every day writing she misspells even easy words. I also have a 8 year old who is just starting to read. I've tried all 1st grade spelling books and it is too much for him. I thought I could use this with both my kids. I need help?
  6. My daughter has never started a foreign language. Do you know where I would start her in Latin? Or a curriculum that is good for beginners? God bless
  7. I am trying to switch over to the well trained mind type of curriculum. Right now we are using: R & S Reading gr 6 R & S Math gr 6 going to switch to teaching textbooks Abeka language 5 and 6 we need to catch up Abeka history gr 6 Apologia science zoology 3 BJU spelling and vocabulary gr 6 Any suggestions for curriculum I can use to switch for this grade level?
  8. I believe handwriting concentrated more on correct formation of letters and practice and at the correct grade level where copy work is copying but when I had my kids do this. they didn't concentrate as well on correct formation of letters.
  9. I love having my kids read for fun. I don't want to kill their love for reading. You can just have them read what they want and have them basically tell you about the book. You may have to glance at the book yourself to know what they are talking about. I also sold my BJU because they are forced to read what someone tells them to read. To be honest. I would rather my child be reading christian books also than reading some literary work that involves suicide (Romeo and Juliet and some others) god bless.
  10. I've heard real good things about Neo science. We are doing Zoology 3 now. If you love to study about the wild animals, my son is loving it.
  11. I tried this and it was boring for us and I just couldn't get it. We have used a different phonics program calle mcguffy phonics and reading and my son really took off.
  12. To me a reading list is a list of good literature to read. A curriculum is targeted at grade level so you know your child is reading at that grade level. god bless.
  13. I love Rod and Staff , I don't know what age they start diagramming, but it takes it slow and instructs it very well.
  14. We used Mcguffy phonics and reading K. It starts off slow and has teaching aids and games and my son really took off with this. It also comes with like 20 easy readers for what they just learned. I highly recommend this program. My son also had real problems with the sounds. god bless.
