  1. I found that each book (Easy Grammar) stressed a couple of new concepts and teaches those thoroughly. Then in the next book, those topics are considered "taught" and only a quick review is given and a couple of different concepts are then thoroughly taught - and so on. So if your child is quick with grammar and you don't mind teaching the concepts a little on your own...then you "could" just skip to the next book. Having saying that.....BUt...... One thing I have learned from home schooling is to try not to worry about the grade level or completion of a text within a "school year" and just go with the flow of what my kids are able to do - not because of the calendar or the textbook author's idea of what is a year's worth of work. As a former school teacher, this has been really hard for me to do. But whenever I do it, everyone is happier and learning is quicker and so much more positive! So I'd probably just continue on in the book we left off in! Myra Myra
  2. Here's the Link for Hewitt's yahoo group. THe moderators are the actual authors of the programs and they offer really good advise and comments. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hewitt_Homeschooling/
  3. I did LCI and LCII this year with my kids when they were 12 and 14....we did the DVD program (which I feel is the only way to go with this program) along with the Lucerne Activity Book. I felt it was a very gentle approach giving my kids (and myself) confidence in our ability to learn Latin. We are now going on with Cambridge Latin in the Fall.
  4. We just listened to this book on tape - it's part of a series! A bit gruesome - but good! Myra TitleThe thieves of Ostia [sound recording] : [a Roman mystery] / Caroline Lawrence
  5. After my son finished Algebra I in Grade 7 we moved onto Geometry in Grade 8> But...once a week during Grade 8 my son watched the Teaching Company Algebra I DVD course ....I felt like it was good review of algebra, taught how to use the graphing calculator, heard a professor use terms pronounced "correctly" plus introduced some advanced concepts as well. Myra
  6. Hi - We did LL grade 7 and 8 and there was only one page or so of grammar. It doesn't "sell" itself as a grammar program but rather a literature program so if you are looking for a program that has speeling and grammar in it, then LL is not for you! Here is their Yahoo group link... the moderator is one of the authors of LL and is very prompt about answering questions! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hewitt_Homeschooling/ Myra
  7. I think it's very good. All the components are there - introduction, body, conclusion. Each paragraph has a main idea with supporting detail sentences. He uses good description - esp. in the intro paragraph. One way I got my son from there to more complex writing is first...get him to be able to "speed" type. That took away the frustration of writing plus the computer caught the basic spelling errors & helped him correct them (not Mom!) Next, each week I had him write a five paragraph essay like your sons on whatever topic he wanted (Spiderman, Pokemon, etc) - then we chose one paragraph (not the whole thing) to sit together and revise at the computer - we would work one week on adding adjectives, then adverbs, then prepositional phrases, sentence variety - you get the idea. Slowly over the school year (with little pain) he got it! SMiles, Myra

  9. Thanks so much! I couldn't find course descriptions when I did a search on this forum...hmmmm! But I could follow Karen's link! Thanks, Myra
  10. My eldest child is entering 9th grade in the Fall and I am attempting to write course descriptions that would end up in his school district "file". I would like to write the course descriptions well enough to be able to include in a college "resume." Help - does anyone have some good samples for me to follow or a great website? I'm looking to start.... with courses he's already finished like .... Jacob's Algebra Jacob's Geometry Latina Christiana I and II Intro To Chemistry Intro to Biology Story of the World (all 4 volumes) Thanks, Myra
  11. I suggest that you join this great yahoo group. They are very helpful with anything about math. THe modertor also has listed by age/grade level/math concept tons of literature/books that can be found at the library to supplement any math program! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LivingMathForum/
  12. I really the like series by the author Anna Harwell Celenza. Each book tells the story of the composer's life and tells about the music on the enclosed CD. I've checked them out from my local library.
  13. We did Jacob's geometry this year for grade 8 - the lessons took about an hour - some days shorter, some longer! As for our scheule - we do Latin first thing in the morning even before breakfast while we're still in our pjs - we kind of like to "get it out of the way!" That's all I can think of that might help you now! Myra
  14. I've used RealSciencee4kids for physics I, chem I, and Biology I. I would recommend them for grades 4= 6! They have good basic information that is presented in a really nice and simple format with lots of pictures and fun labs. Myra
  15. Danielle, Wow! Thanks for the info! We just finished My Familly and Other Animals and the naturalist "bug" has bitten us! HA! Sorry - couldn't resist teasing! Myra
  16. Danielle, I just went on-line to find out more about the Kamana Naturalist Training you mentioned for your 9th grader's list.....could you tell me more about it? It looks interesting but I would like a "first hand" scoop on it as you can never really get a good idea by a website. Thanks, Myra
  17. Let's see... Math - Lial's Intermediate Algebra Science - Real Science4Kids Chemistry II along with Teaching Company Chemistry ELective - Astronomy Music - violin English - Lightning Lit - both semesters of American Literature Latin (Cambridge) History of US (using Hewitts syllabus/tests) - supplemented to be able to take AP US history in Spring Traditional Logic I (Memoria Press)
  18. The yahoo group that could really answer your questions is..... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RealScience4Kids/ I stretched Chem I to take one semester but my kids were grades 5 and 7. I found the text really a good basic introduction to each topic and then I "googled" other lessons to supplement. According to Gravitas, one year study is Chem I and Bio I and Physics I when you just follow their program as they suggest. Myra
  19. Here's my plans.... Lightning Literature Jacob's Algebra Cambridge Latin Logic I (Memoria Press) History of US (using Hewitt's syllabus) RealScience4kids Chemistry II Violin Logos Computer Programming That's the main core...with electives as the year goes on!
  20. I found learning to "speed" on a word processor program (like microsoft word) has helped my son immensely. Now when he types his rough drafts he recieves immediate feedback on his spelling from the outside source (spell check, not Mom!) - and since the typing is easy for him he is not overloaded getting his spelling errors highlighted for him. It doesn't sovle all his spelling difficulties, which are huge, but it has made a big difference for him. I used the AVKO typing/spelling program. Myra
  21. Thanks .....one less thing to have to consider! Myra
  22. I've used this with my kids. The lessons vary in time, but I used it once a week for about 45 minutes as there yearly art lessons! I would recommend it! Myra
  23. Hi- Here's my question....is there a difference bwt classical and eccel. Latin besides the pronounciation? Are the conjugations, declensions, etc. the same in each? Why I ask... my kids are about 1/2 the way through Latina Chrisitiana II and I really like the program. I was hoping to continue on in the Fall with Cambridge Latin. So I didn't want to finish/continue with LCII (where 3rd declension nouns are taught, verb principal parts, and more conjugations) if everything needs to be relearned in the Fall. Thanks, Myra
  24. I know that our local co-op once ordered Scholatic booklets for each student that are published whenever there is a presidential election. I haven't seen the books personally so I can't give you a "review" but....I'm sure you could go online and find out more info. Myra
  25. For a snack - try jello in a clear cup before class...then provide kids with "cell" or "protozoa" parts that they can "stick" into their jello cup.........like smarties candies, string licorice, raisins, you get the idea!
