  1. I just discovered this pdf compressor, and it is a beautiful thing! Thank you!
  2. Recommendations Required: School Report, Final Report Do I skip sending a Mid-Year report? Or should I send one anyway? I would rather not b/c he has not completed the same amount of work in each course. He focuses on one and then another and does not necessarily follow a schedule like a public school would. I am afraid that might not look good.
  3. Sometimes community colleges have non credit courses too. Maybe something like that to get your feet wet? Or a local club in an area of interest. Does your Dh feel like his education should come first? I am in the same boat, but no time right now anyway, so I can't do a thing about it until later--but I will be figuring out ways to go back to school at some point if at all possible.
  4. What about looking at colleges, finding what you'd like to do and trying to find a way to take one little step in that direction. Maybe one class? Maybe at the community college? Could you start there and see where it leads?
  5. Send me your invoice and I'll pay you for the therapy! :) That's what I needed to hear. For some reason this whole process is making me an insecure glob of jello!
  6. What do I do if I realize I sent transcripts with a typo? While printing a transcript I realized I listed his SAT date as 5/2014 instead of 5/2015. Should I do anything about it? Will they just realize I goofed up when they receive his scores? I want to scream! I proofed this so many times. I have always had issues with knowing the year b/c of the school year not following the calendar year. How badly did I screw up. Should I send an email if he and I were directly communicating with an admissions officer? Calm me down, someone, please!
  7. IT is a poll about dogs for his American Government class, but you do not have to know anything about dogs to take it. TIA https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MJK3DDD
  8. Thanks, RootAnn. I did notice that about the ACT, and I think the way the scientific info is presented would make him panic, even though it can all be figured out. That has always been his problem with Math --overcoming anxiety. I think you have hit the nail on the head with 'it could drive all of you crazy'. For all of his schools he is in the mid 50th with Math--except for one, but that is not his top choice and the scores are skewed by all the engineering and pre-med applicants. He would be applying as an English major there. Even if they would not overlook his math score, he can get in by transfer from a county school--if he should decide he wants to go there. I showed him all the info today, and he seems to be leaning toward calling it good and moving on. I am still investigating what snowball mom mentioned about scholarship decisions being based on combined scores in a single sitting. Thank you all for the perspectives. This discussion has been extremely helpful.
  9. Thank you. That is interesting. If merit awards are for combined score in a single sitting, I don't see much point in him retaking. I'm still checking about the mid 50th percentile on the Math score as Sebastian suggested.
  10. I know at least one superscores and one has recently gone SAT optional. He is applying to smallish liberal arts schools and a couple of local universities. He does not want to be far from home, does not want a city atmosphere, so his choices are limited. Not entirely decided on major, but considering English, Journalism or something Education related. Mid range scores for math, I am checking. So far yes on 2 of the schools. Sometimes I think he'd be better off at a community college for the first 2 years, but my own experiences at the community college were not good.
  11. No math in college. He is still in high school. He is taking one lit and economics course at a local university. He has standout extracurriculars and multiple awards-- both state and national, has worked part time since sophomore year even during the school year and has multiple articles published in online and in print magazines and newsletters, plus leadership in his extracurriculars. He is paying for ALL of his AP classes, books and college classes plus extracurriculars with his own money earned from his job. Also, I will reiterate that his scores went down slightly when he retook--not up as many are saying. I will take a look at the ACT and possibly have him try a practice test. His Critical Reading score on the SAT is above 700, though, and I hate to lose that. From all I have researched he is in the 2nd tier of scholarships for the colleges and universities he is considering. ETA: I looked at the ACT. No way he can take it. The Science section would have him in major test anxiety if he took it cold. He would need to practice for it. He is not a good test taker. The only reason he does well on the English portions of the SAT are b/c that is his area of interest and he finds work in that area far easier. It doesn't put his mind in a tizzy for whatever reason.
  12. I think we really like your way of thinking! :hurray: I have decided I am going to sit him down and show him all the facts today and have him decide.
  13. That is what I would like to do--but I do not think it is realistic given his workload, work schedule, and our finances. I am leaning towards making him shine in other ways on his applications.
  14. I have looked again at his top three college choices and their scholarships are based on a combination of GPA, test scores, Essay, and Extracurriculars. His total score puts him well into the scholarship considerations. At this point I am leaning toward NOT having him retake and putting the efforts into finishing out the year maintaining his GPA, getting A's in the college courses he is taking, and focusing on his application Essays. Any further thoughts?
  15. Which is why I had him try one more time. But his scores went down slightly, not up. I'm afraid he might be getting burned out. I think I checked scholarship minimums, but I will have to look again.
  16. We have invested a lot of time in the SAT and he is in his senior year. I do not think this is a good time to switch tests.
  17. Ds's Weakness has always been math and he does not test well. His first SAT score had him a tiny bit below average in math and very high in Critical Reading. His total score was above 1800. I had him retake this fall and his math score went down a tiny bit and so did his critical reading scores. At this point we are really struggling to fit in schoolwork, college applications, and extracurriculars. He also works a part time job. Our family has been undergoing some big stresses, which I will not get into here. His first score is good enough for all of the colleges he is seriously considering. At this point I am wondering if retaking is worth all the time and effort that would have to go into it. Maybe his time is better spent on college applications? Any thoughts? Three things I am thinking: 1. If he could raise Math score he would be in better place for scholarships. 2. I don't want colleges to see the dip in score on his recent test. 3. Maybe it is time to accept that his first score is going to have to be good enough and there are more things in life than an SAT score.
  18. No. I would like for it to be more boring. :001_smile:
  19. I am looking for women's plastic flip flops for Dd and I to wear in campground showers for an upcoming trip. I'd like them to be cute so they could be used for other purposes and they need to be very inexpensive since we are on an extremely tight budget. It would be nice if they were comfortable too. TIA.
  20. Thank you for such a detailed answer! I think if I tutor it will have to wait until my own 2 kids are done high school. I know I would suffer from the hours and energy spent on others as you describe and I'm already going quite a bit of that with the extracurriculars both kids are in. Your post solidifies my decision to wait. I had a close friend (who did a lot of tutoring) tell me not to do it while I still have kids in high school if I can help it, so we'll just keep pinching pennies.
  21. Can you elaborate? Do you have the same students for a certain length of time? Are they receptive? Do you see progress? Are you using your own methods, ideas, or are lessons provided for you? I have thought about doing this, but I am afraid I'll be thinking about how to help ____ while I'm at home and not able to truly focus on my own kids. That's what happens whenever I teach a class, which is why I stopped.
  22. This was us until last fall. We had a horrible infestation and even my indoor cat ended up with them. Took a while to get under control. We'll be using something this sprig b/c I don't want to go through that again!
  23. This all sounds very familiar. We took in my mom's dog after she was divorced from my stepfather and the only way Dh would agree to taking him at all is if we put an ad in the paper and found the dog a new home. I extremely reluctantly agreed. At the last minute, with a family ready to come over and adopt the dog I could not do it. My family had lost so much with the divorce and giving away our dog just was not the right thing to do. I paid for it with silent treatment for a good week, but now, 20 years later Dh thanks me for digging my heels in. That dog became his best friend. Other similar stories very much like those quoted. I've also got a Dh who likes things to stay very much the same and needs nudging at times.
