  1. This may be too late, but we used Bob Jones math for my daughter this year and she really liked it. A couple of pages were a waste of time IMO (i.e. predictions) so I tore it out and thew it away.
  2. Good info. Thanks for sharing. Planning math for 4th, 3rd and 1st graders.
  3. WHAT?!? Mummifying a chicken? Where have I been?
  4. I dream the same thing, but I've never played it......
  5. :iagree: There's so much I WANT to do, but we all have our limits!
  6. :iagree: If I constantly think about the ps lackluster eduction then our homeschool would implode. My kids would like to see something explode though! It's good to hear what you said about the older, wiser woman. Needing perspective and that's perfect.
  7. This is good stuff! Thank you! (All of it is good. Not just this quoted portion.)
  8. Yes, "underachiever" is misspelled. Just seemed appropriate. There are thousands of amazing moms (and dads) on here teaching their kids and doing an AMAZING job! I struggle getting on WTM because it seems like I just don't do enough. How does a mom know she's really teaching enough and pushing her kids hard enough? Is it normal to be concerned that my efforts are second rate? Will I ever reach a point I can  because I'm doing everything with excellence? I'd love to hear from other mothers with kids out of school and in a decent college/university. :bigear: I totally see why parents go the public or private school route. If we had the $$,$$$ and could justify it I would enroll my kids in private school in a heartbeat!
  9. I think harsh might have been to say, "There's no place for something like this..." Just wanted to understand why someone would do this. For me, I enjoy sitting and listening quietly. I honestly wanted to understand why. Not judge.
  10. Very interesting. I think I may have to learn this art! She was making squares. (Hot pads perhaps? or squares to a larger blanket?) Either way, she was able to participate and I guess few (no one other than me) were distracted by it. I like the comparison to doodling. :-) The great thing is that she was a young lady (thirty-something). Thanks for the input. New-fangled (yet somehow not hip), :-)
  11. Today at church (I attended a ladies only Bible study during the "Sunday School" time) and there was a lady crocheting. I don't crochet. Would love to figure it out-- just haven't made that happen yet. But, IF I did crochet, would I in a church? I don't think so. Although maybe it helps with her concentration... if it does then I should adopt this hobby ASAP for my 9 year old boy. Am I too old fashioned? Am I missing something here? Did ladies take their crocheting to church a hundred years ago? Is that much different than playing a video game during church? Too old fashioned (or too new fangled),
  12. You need to read Superfreakeconomics.... There's a chapter on car seats... Must read.
  13. You need to read Superfreakeconomics.... You'll never think of car seats the same again....
  14. Sigh. our elementary school is literally across the street (with tennis courts and pools between the school and my front porch). I've literally stood on the porch and thought about enrolling them before. Your words are a good reminder that the grass isn't always greener....
  15. Pretty sure that Xerox has (or at least, had) this type of day care at the corporate level.... The CEO at the time had young children. Don't quote me on this but I think it was in the WSJ.
  16. If you need a library in the Denton County Texas area then I highly recommend the Denton Public Library. If you live outside the city it's $60/year. (Which is a steal of a deal, if you ask me, for a library that is excellent.) I've suggested about 15 books for purchase since we joined 6 months ago and they have bought about 12 of those suggestions. The newest is WHY BOYS FAIL by Richard Whitmire. I know many hs-ers don't have good libraries (our local library is terrible). The investment has been well worth it.
  17. We don't let our kids say with some relatives either. Our heart tells us it isn't right for our kids. A mother's heart never lies.
  18. I just learned (this week) that SWB has posted videos on youtube that show her teaching WWE to her son. Just search Peace Hill Press. The video is called Dictation with Dan. I found it very helpful.
  19. I think that most ps parents don't know how to even help their child-- especially with math. Or that they can complain about something like a teaching method. After all, professionals have developed new curriculum to help kids, right? PLUS.... if the parent cannot co-teach the same idea at home isn't that causing dependence on the ps?
  20. Maybe you could do "Under the Rock" in Latin. Then at least if someone gets the humor via Latin they might have an above average education. Via is a bad choice-- because VIA is ROAD in Latin. :001_huh:
