  1. We were trying to decide about Barton when a wonderful woman posted her experiences with sequential spelling (about $12 per book). If you take the time and do it exactly as it says, it works. My daughter has improved not only her spelling, but her reading! Another friend of ours spends quite a bit of time doing Barton. I spend 10 minutes a day. Our children are both progressing, but mine is progressing faster, and with less time and money on my part. I think it's worth a shot!
  2. My older daughter does the test books starting with 6th grade for testing practice. My younger one does not do the tests.
  3. I'm also trying to decide the same thing - have you come to any conclusions?
  4. Math U See is solid teaching. It is important to get the foundation before moving on to something else. My dd was so confused in public school, because as soon as she'd start to understand one thing, it would jump to another. MUS allows mastery. I can't say enough wonderful things about it.
  5. Try Math U See. It's especially nice to watch the lessons with the kids, especially if they have math anxiety. That way, someone else is teaching them, not you! The approach is gentle, and can move as slowly or quickly as they need to go.
  6. We really like Noeo science - they have fantastic books, and it's easy to do more or less depending on the interest level of the subject.
  7. We love lapbooking! The thing to remember in our case is that not everything we're learning has to be on the lapbook!
  8. We loved Zaner Bloser, and bought it directly from the company. It really was well laid out and not intimidating.
  9. Have you looked at Tapestry of Grace that allows you to teach all your children the same subject at their level? The first unit is on ancient history.
  10. Lapbooking is easily adjusted to different levels. We love the CD's from Homeschool in the Woods.
  11. Did you find something more user friendly? I also am having difficulties.
  12. I also am really worried about Latin...any ideas would be appreciated.
  13. I had my kids write 30 minutes a day. At first it was hard for them, then they realized that they enjoyed it! We started with personal or family experiences. They didn't need to finish a piece every day, just work for 30 minutes. Worked like magic.
  14. My kids loved The Great Turkey Walk by Kathleen Karr. It's very funny.
  15. I agree that it's best for them to have their own copies, so no one is rushed.
  16. Can you be specific about why you like it? I saw it at the curriculum fair last weekend, and just didn't get it. I feel like my kids already knew a lot of this stuff. Maybe the rep just didn't explain it well.
  17. Thanks so much! We're just starting a little house unit!
  18. We have just been winging it. The only thing I check ahead is anything I need for experiment day.
  19. I've used GUM grammer. It's boring, but they just do a page or two a day, and they learned a lot. I've also used Grammar Ace from Sonlight, which is a lot of fun.
  20. I've heard great things about Noeo's Physics Program. I like the Noeo biology that we are doing, because it allows me to customize a lot, while following a general plan. Check it out! Jen
