For those using Tapestry of Grace
Sherri in Central CA replied to ClassicMom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I asked TOG if redesigned 3 & 4 would have enough Economics material to qualify for 1/2 credit. Dana responded with this: "No, in Redesign, there won't be enough to count as a full or 1/2 credit. There *is* some information about banking and finance, but as it pertains to history. I will be looking for a good economics program for Lampstand to sell, but as of yet haven't found one." I hope they will be able to develop one soon. -
TOG Which Yr ?
Sherri in Central CA replied to Sherri in Central CA's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thank you for your advice! I am looking forward to our first year with TOG. I know it will make teaching my multi level kids much easier. -
I need help deciding what to do next year. DS course sequence 4th California History 5th Am. History 6th Ancients 7th Middle Ages 8th Am. History & Govt (We are only going to make it through the 1800's) I thought that TOG 4 would be the next logical step, however, I see that the redesign version is due out in 2009-2010. Should I... A. Order Classic TOG 4 B. Order Redesigned TOG 3 (We haven't covered Early Modern World History) C. Order Redesigned TOG 1 * D. *(Ds was a late reader; he has just recently started to like reading, and I would hate to cause him anymore frustration. I plan to complete all four TOG levels; I'm just not sure if he is ready to tackle Ancient Lit right now.) Any input/advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated.:D

California bans Homeschooling
Sherri in Central CA replied to 5kidsforME's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Take a look at ACR 115. (link on other thread) It's new legislation addressing the court case. -
14 years ago, I received a standard teaching credential from WY. (CA would call it a professional clear teaching credential) I moved to CA, received a (2yr) preliminary teaching credential, and taught in the CA public school system. During this time, I took and passed both Single subject and Multiple subject tests (required by the state for credential renewal). This was not enough, however, for the state to renew my teaching credential. Between the time I was issued the preliminary credential and the day I requested the renewal (less than 2yr later), the state had changed testing sources and my results would not be recognized. They also wanted me to take an additional year of course work (covering the same material I had taken in WY), get a formal recommendation from a college or university in CA (even though I have one from WY), and earn a certificate in Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development (in order to teach non-English/limited English speaking students). After experiencing the "unwritten policies" of CA public schools, (A mentor teacher/union rep. once told me, "Don't worry about challenging the high-achievers they will learn no matter what...Focus on the low-achievers...that's where the money lies.") dh and I decided it would be best if I stayed home and taught our own children. If I was good enough to teach other peoples kids in CA public schools for two years, why am I not good enough to teach my own English speaking kids now? Sherri Homeschooling for nearly 9yr :)

What Math for DD Precal or Trig?
Sherri in Central CA replied to langfam's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My DD has completed Saxon Alg1&2, Adv. Math 1 (half the book), and soon TT Geometry. How do you coordinate Saxon with TT Geometry? Would you recommend coordinating Saxon with any other TT? How do you reflect this on a transcript? I'm sorry for so many questions; after reading recent "discussions", I've become totally confused about what to do with my oldest dc next year. Thanks, Sherri ______________ ds-14yo-9th grade next year dd-11yo-7th " " " dd-10yo-5th " " " ds- 6yo-1st " " " dd- 3yo -
My ds(14) will be going into 9th grade this fall, and has hit walls with every math program we have ever used...Saxon, MUS, and Abeka. He has a problem retaining information previously learned.:( He currently is working in Abeka's Pre-Algebra; I had hoped to review his weak areas over the summer and then move on to Algebra I next year. My problem is that (after reading a prior thread) Abeka may not be a good choice. 1) Would retrying Saxon be a good idea? 2) If Saxon is a good choice, can I use 2nd edition versions? (Algebra 1/2 and Algebra 1) Or, will there be problems down the line when we get to Algebra 2 and Advanced Math? Any and all input is welcomed!
