  1. We are trying to figure out why she doesn't like Saxon. So far she has said that she sees no purpose in it. She also says that it seems like a monumental task (it takes her awhile to do the lesson--mostly due to her dwelling on how much she hates it rather than being unable to do the work. If I sit next to her and encourage her through it, she can complete it more quickly.) She has also said that she read in the beginning of the book that the lessons would get gradually harder so she's worried that at some point the lessons will be so hard that she'll have to do math all day. I've encouraged her, and told her that thus far the lessons have been easy for her so I doubted that the lessons would quickly become that difficult. I reminded her that each lesson has instruction so they wouldn't be giving her new material without explaining it. She is feeling a little better about it this morning thankfully.
  2. DD is 14 and in 8th grade this year. She is doing Saxon Algebra 1 (she's a half way through it) and has only used Saxon for math. She's fairly bright and doesn't have any problems understanding the concept and rarely gets any problems wrong, and when they are wrong, it is usually because of a transcription error. The problem is that she HATES it. She told me today that she can't wait to be done with school (i.e. graduated) so that she doesn't have to do math anymore. So, I'm not sure what to do and could use some advice. I love math so I'm having a hard time understanding her hatred of it (I know, I know, she isn't me). So, do I make her continue with Saxon and try to have her work on her attitude? Or do I switch to something else? I want something that will adequately prepare her for college should she choose to go. I know that Saxon fits the bill for that. But she hates it. Any advice?
  3. Do you use regular snaps or do you use the poly-resin snaps? If you use the poly-resin ones, where do you get them and where did you get the snap press (or whatever that tool is called that you use for the resin snaps)?
  4. After reading all the responses I'm so excited to try some!! I switched to a Diva cup awhile back so I rarely wear pads, but dd is too young for one of those and absolutely despises the disposable pads. When I told her I was thinking about some reusable pads, she was very interested. She's willing to try pretty much anything if she can get rid of the disposables. :001_smile: As for the cramping, I've found I have less just by switching to the Diva Cup. But I also only wear a pad 1 or 2 days so not sure if the decreased cramping is from wearing a pad less days or using the Diva.
  5. Thanks for the info ladies!!! Not sure now if I'll order some online or make some myself--I might have to see if I can get some decent snaps. Anyone had ones with PUL fabric on the underside? Does it make noise?
  6. I am looking at buying some reusable feminine pads. Anyone have a particular brand that they love? Thanks!
  7. How about scones? The best recipes use butter and cream. If you have a food processor they can be mixed in less than 10 minutes and they are very versatile--you can add whatever mixins (dried fruit, choc chips, etc) you have on hand. We also like Wild Rice Porridge. Basically you just cook some wild rice, then add some cream, maple syrup and craisins. Top with chopped pecans. Very, very yummy. My eldest daughter's favorite breakfast is the following: take a baked potato, scoop out some of the filling. Add a little butter, chopped ham (or sausage or bacon), green onions to the bottom of the potato. Crack an egg into the shell of the potato. Bake at 350 till set. Top with shredded cheese. Hope you get some new ideas that will work for your family. :001_smile:
  8. Open it and if there is not mold and it still smells/tastes like sour cream, go ahead and use it.
  9. I second the Sienna 8 passenger. But you'll need to get a 2010 or older for that to be an option. The 2011 has an 8 passenger option but the 8th seat is ridiculously small. It is even too small for my very thin 12 year-old. The 8 passenger Honda Odyssey also has a very small 8th seat so I'd rule that one out.
  10. My MIL has asked for flavored coffee this year. She's normally impossible to buy for so I'm glad that she suggested something this year. Or what about homemade mixes--soup mix, cookie mix, seasoning packets, etc?
  11. You could have the kids take some Vitamin D3. During the winter this year my oldest 4 kids are taking 2000 IU a day. My sister's midwife is also now recommending liquid vit D for infants. The American Association of Pediatrics recommends 400 IU for infants daily but I haven't done any other researching to see if that is the best dose or not. I haven't gotten around to getting any liquid drops for our little one yet.
  12. We have an '05 Sienna that we love. When we were shopping for vans before our 4th was born, we were deciding between a Toyota and a Honda, but I thought that the Toyota was more comfortable. Ours does handle snow well--and we have plenty of it here.
  13. I think it is absolutely wonderful!!! Plus you can customize it to whatever his likes are. I know I love it when I have meals in the freezer and I've always been blessed when others have brought over a meal. And you FIL would see it as a gift that you put some thought into--something he really needs (not something that will just gather dust). Let us know how it goes.
  14. I'd eat it. My grandma even used to leave a fully cooked roast on the counter and eat it the next day. (She's still living, BTW).
  15. Yogurt or kefir is a good idea depending on what antibiotics she is on. You can't have dairy/calcium products within 2 hours of taking cipro or levofloxacin. If she is on amoxicillin, then it is no problem. Check the drug info that came with the antibiotic to make sure. If she can't have dairy, then just make sure she isn't taking it on an empty stomach. Hopefully she feels better soon!
  16. Do you sew? I have the same problem--smaller waist but with hips. I just put a little elastic inside the waistband in the back and it gets rid of the gap--and I don't have to wear a belt!! I second the Ann Taylor jeans. Those are the ones that fit the best. Of course, right now nothing fits since I still need to lose the rest of my pregnancy weight. But that's another topic for another day. :001_smile:
  17. It could be. Do you play or do you have children who play? Check out the piano first. Play the notes to find out if there are any that stick or don't make any sound. If you just want a piano in the house to plunk around on or for your kiddos to learn on, then a free one is a great way to start (assuming it is in decent condition). Just don't expect it to sound as good as a brand new piano. It can definitely be moved in a pickup. We gave one away once (we had bought a new one) and the people who came and picked it up hauled it away in one of those little pickups--couldn't believe it (they also showed up with only one male and no piano dollies--wasn't so sure the piano was actually going to get out of the house).
  18. I usually just stick it in a plastic bag and pop it in the freezer. I usually wait to put it in the freezer until the day after I bake it--usually because I just don't feel like bringing it downstairs to the freezer. :p For the plastic bags I usually try to use the thicker kind (I reuse the bags I sometimes get from buying an occasional loaf from Great Harvest). If I do happen to get a little moisture in the bag, I just take the loaf out of the bag and wrap it in a kitchen towel while it is thawing.
  19. We use the Brock Magiscope and bought it from Rainbow Resource. We bought the extra package that included the higher powered magnification. We've used it to see swimming protozoa (I think that's what we saw--has been a few months since it has been warm enough to actually be by the pond) in pond water so I think the magnification is pretty good. Plus it is easily portable since it doesn't require electricity.
  20. We have naptime here every day!! My oldest (10yo) doesn't nap anymore but she either works on schoolwork or just has some quiet time by herself. My dd7 sometimes takes a nap--depends on what we had the night before and if she had enought sleep (she has to get up at 7). Dd2 (almost 3) still naps every day. Ds5 lies down every day and sleeps about half the time. I lie down and sleep every day. I don't know how I'd survive without naptime. I don't think it is being lazy at all.
  21. What about Amazing Grace or The Ultimate Gift? Both were good.
