  1. Taught all 3 of my dc to read. Oldest was in PS kinder and I decided to teach her to read since the teacher wasn't doing it. She was reading at 2nd grade level by the end of school year. 2nd dd was 3 1/2 when she started and was reading at 3rd grade level by 4. Last dd was reading at 3rd grade level by 3 1/2. She was my earliest reader. All are great readers and and my younger 2 are great spellers. Oldest still struggles with spelling but I think it has to do with natural abilities. We did use the book version but then used the funnix 2 cd after to reinforce the reading. It is definitely more fun and colorful on the computer. My older 2 would come and watch the younger one do the funnix 2 because they loved the stories. HTH, Madonna
  2. I agree, daily geography can be done all in one day taking only 10-15 minutes. Super easy but good information. My oldest has completed the series and she was pretty much independent from about grade 4 through 6th. HTH, Madonna
  3. Thanks for posting these. You gals rock! Madonna
  4. Fantastic!!! Love your school room. Wish my hubby would finish the 2nd floor so I can get started on mine. I second the question on where did you get that table, it is a great idea?
  5. Hello all, I am in need of some help with incorporating literature for my 6th grader. I don't really know what to do. Can anyone help me with that . Is there a specific curriculum that will guide me to ask the right kinds of questions. I really like curriculum that will tell me exactly what I need to say or do. I don't need any grammar since my dd is using Rod & Staff. Just wanted to add some literature to her schedule. Thanks in advance, Madonna
  6. I probably am repeating what other posters have said but my children basically do it on their own. They will have to practice for at least 15 minutes a day and the older 2 will go to the books and play. They usually will play until they basically have it memorized. I do look over their shoulder now and then to make sure they are going forward. They tend to like playing the songs they have mastered. Now for my younger dd5, I have to sit and help her with a page and we just go through it until I feel she is comfortable doing it. Then she will practice for a few days on the pages she has done and we move on to the next new thing. HTH, Madonna
  7. It's gorgeous, where did you get your rolling carts. I need something like that and yours look perfect. Madonna
  8. Not to hijack the thread but do you need the TM for the upper levels such as 400 and up? Thanks, madonna
  9. I want to thank you all for your advice. I have several options now that I can look into. I am thinking about starting my dd on the Professor B level 2 and hope she will finish that quickly since it should be all review. Then possibly move her to the BJU 6 for next year. If I can find those Marilyn Burns books in the library I could go through that for fun. Do you think that is too much? Madonna
  10. OhElizabeth, What books did you use for your BJU math. Did you need to buy all of the kit or just parts and which parts did you actually use. Thanks, Madonna
  11. Paula- LOF didn't seem to help her any so we had to move to something else that is why we didn't try the other books ELaurie- Professor B sounds interesting. Do you use the internet based program or the books? Thanks, Madonna
  12. Hi, I am usually a lurker and don't post too often. I do need some help with where to go with my dd11 who is not a mathy person. Our history with math includes completing the Rightstart levels through E. We tried half of the geometry in Rightstart and found she just wasn't getting the concepts so we went back for review with Life of Fred Fractions, then went to Key to Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. Now she has just completed Singapore 5a and 5b and we are going to continue with 6a/b. However, with all of this she still has trouble just getting it. If anyone has any suggestions on what to continue with I am all ears. I just don't know what else I can do to help her. I have discovered she has a difficult time of transference. She can't seem to be able to apply one concept to another problem or situation for some reason. Thank you for any suggestions, Madonna
  13. Well, I have gone through all the levels up to E with my oldest (she is 10) and we stopped halfway through the Geometry. I have currently used all the levels up to D with my second daughter (she is 7 ). RightStart is time consuming especially levels A-B and part of C. It does ease up during Level C and you aren't spending quite as long with them. I do feel that it is a wonderful program and it teaches them so much about mental math. It really depends on the child and how quickly they get the concept. My oldest really had trouble understanding the concepts or it took longer for her to understand. She is one that needs more practice with concepts and I didn't play the games more than what was required or suggested. We stopped Geometry and started doing the Key to Series with decimals, percents, and fractions so she can get a better handle on them. I found that it was introduced in Level E but there wasn't enough practice . When she is done with that, she will move into Singapore Primary math 5 and 6. I plan on her finishing those by the end of next year. My 2nd daughter is totally different and understands the concepts and is flying through the program. She really understands the math and it is amazing how she can figure things out mentally. I feel this program is amazing and it makes so much sense. I now understand why I multiply or divide the way I do. RightStart is great for understanding the concept not just memorizing steps to get an answer. Sorry this got so long, but I do believe it is a good program and yes it does take some time on your part to teach but in the end, I think they have a better understanding of math and why they do the things they do. HTH, Madonna
