  1. I use CLE math (and used to use the LA) and we do it just as Tibbie described. I sit at the table with alittle whiteboard and go over all the new stuff. Then we go through all the excercises one at a time and I assign them the things I know they can use practice on and skip those they dont. Because I do this everyday I know what to skip or practice. I never make them do every problem..it takes too long and CLE has so much repeat there is no need to keep practicing what they know by heart. Takes us half an hour to do one lesson amd my kids enjoy the interaction so much they say they never want to be left to just get on doing the workbook on their own again. I never have to grade their work anymore... they do the problem then we go over it using the whiteboard...if they got the problem right they get to skip the rest of the problems in that section..if they get it wrong I assign them another one. That way we mark as we go and I can see straight up what they are having problems with so I dont have to call them back to the lesson two days later to correct things because thats how long it took me to get to grading it.
  2. I agree with Tibbie... If I was so poor I couldnt afford any resources except 10c out of date books from Goodwill I would put my kids in school. There comes a time when you have to stop being dog headed about homeschooling if you can't provide a better education then a school can... I went to a school in a poverty stricken neighbourhood as a kid...it was a no frills school..the same with high school an average school in a bad area. I still got a decent enough education to get into law school.
  3. I'm not suprised at her reaction....its Christmas and she was probably hoping to spend time with them. My inlaws kind of ruined our end of year schooling plans this year because they where dying to spend time with the kids. They are 70.. who knows how much time they have left so I just sighed inwardly, finished school early and let them spend time with the kids. Relationships are just as important as school...sometimes moreso. My 40 yo SIL was just diagnosed with leukemia...you bet we let the kids take all sorts of days off to spend time with her when she is well enough to do so.
  4. 8 😳 However she only got buds then stopped. 10.5 now and still only slightly bigger then buds..so they can grow slowly. DD is underweight so wasnt expecting this... none of the women in my family got a period till 14 so fingers crossed xxx
  5. Your gift giving seems skimpy compared to what I spend 😠Technology costs money and as kids get older thats what they want / need especially when they are homeschooled. I dont have a budget for Christmas..I just take whatever I have to spare at the time and spend till its gone 🙄 Everything is cash..we dont have credit cards. Keep in mind that everything costs 2-3x more in Australia then USA ( no such thing as a $100 notebook here) and at a guess I think I spent about $500 EACH on my kids this year 😳. If you want to know where that goes..here is an example..DD really wanted a build a bear ...because it was her big present I let her pick out 1 outfit ....so bear plus 1 outfit plus shoes was $95🙄 My boys wanted a big Lego set...those are over $100 each... So you can see at those prices the money gets used pretty quickly and the gifts are not exactly exploding from out under the tree.
  6. Goodness...I had never heard of this but I can see it happenning. Sometimes I think I am too honest or niave because I would never come up with these ideas myself...its never crossed my mind to fill a box with an old item and return it. That being said..in Australia when you return something they usually open the box and check it before they let you and most stores only give store credit these days...I can see why. I had a friend in high school who's brother used to buy expensive computer games and then copy them and return them. That was back in the day before it was common to do so and they still did returns on games. The crappy thing about it was that my friends family was rich and could easily afford those games... now I know how they saved their money 🙄 You are lucky Target refunded without a problem...in Australia they would have given ME the hairy eyeball and all but accused ME of exchanging the pieces and trying to rip them off. I've had it happen a couple times where I bought a computer game and the staff forgot to put the disk in and then when I went back to get it..they all but reported me to the police for stealing it 🙄 My kids are avid Lego fans so I'll keep in mind that if I ever get them one of the expensive sets I will check it right there in the store before I leave so I can't be accused. Although I did do that once with a DVD and it was missing and they still accused me even though I hadnt even left the store..they wanted to walk out to my car and check I didnt stash it there even though it had been literally one minute since I purchased it 😡
  7. We have a Lego rug and thats the only place they are allowed to build. Yes Lego is all over the rug but nowhere else in the house. The only time Ive stood on Lego is when I ventured onto the rug at night..my own fault 😉
  8. Root beer is more similar to Sarsparella (sp). You can buy it here and there in Australia now..its in a tan coloured can and called A&W root beer.
  9. I was having the same issue with my 10yo DD. Whilst she still does play with toys she really has everything she needs before she will just outgrow them. I got her tickets to see Matilda but then she requested a Build a bear. So I will save the tickets for her birthday ( which is a week before the show anyway) and get the bear. To make it her big gift I will buy a couple of outfits to go with it...we have done build a bear before but dont get the outfits because they add too much to the cost. She will be very happy with that...and once outgrown it can just sit on her bed for cuddles.
  10. No freakin elf here. My kids get tremendously excited over opening their $2 chocolate advent calander...I'm happy to leave it there and not raise their expectations of Christmas magic 😂
  11. My son asked me for a game called Googly Eyes or something similar. When I finally found it I realised it was a game similar to Pictionary but you wear funny glasses while drawing that messes with your eyesight so that the picture turns out wonky. My kid has a huge sense of humour so I can see why that appeals..it sounds more fun the regular pictionary. Found it https://www.amazon.com/Googly-Eyes-Game-Drawing-Vision-Altering/dp/B00I4VTUQW/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1481618301&sr=1-1&keywords=googly+eyes
  12. That site is still there..I visited just last week 😉
  13. Not necessarily if its a cultural name. I used to think Fatima was such a bad name...until I learned it was pronounced Fah-teem-ah and not Fat-i-ma which I originally thought...I think it's quite pretty sounding now.
  14. My bug bear is that because of the mispelling trend nobody trusts how to spell any name. I have kids named Anna and James and I seriously want to kick people when they continually ask if James is spelt with a z or if Anna has a h on the end. My youngest is named Isaac and I was expecting some trouble with that for obvious reasons but everyone seems to know how to spell that correctly without even asking 🤔
  15. My kids have both but play with the themed kits way more. They use the plain ones to build house type constructions but like all the specialty pieces and minifigures that come with the themed kits. My kids favourites are the City Legos though so I guess still kind of plain compared to,Star Wars and such. Plus the trademarked themes are always more expensive.
  16. 1 more week and we are done for the year. No planning for next year needed as I'm happy with what we are using so will just keep going with it. Kids will be Grades 5,4 and 2. Not doing any school type thing over the 6 week break. We use CLE Math Build Your Library Moving Beyond the Page Sequential Spelling.
  17. Things on their wishlist DD10 Guinness Book of world records 2017 Yahztee ( thats all mum cause I know you don't have much money) 😘 DS9 Lego Books DS7 (what doesnt he want is more the question) 🙄 Lego (all the volcano sets and the big firestation) Meowzie( talked him down to a cheaper cat that does more then just flash its stupid eyes) A stuffed dalmation dog Nerf guns Mixels Lego Minifigures Googly eyes game Skylanders Imaginator game 3DS xl 🙄 Pokemon games Heel skates 13 storey tree house books Hotwheels cars and fifty different types of track 😆😆😆😆😆 My first two kids will be getting more then their list...DS7 will be getting way less 🙄
  18. I bought them on presale so even at B reserve we have seats right up the front. DD will love it and it will be her first live show. I feel bad I couldnt afford to take the boys but they wouldnt enjoy it as much anyway.
  19. My boys love Lego so much I save really hard to get the big sets for Christmas...only little sets always seems a little disappointing. Plus I also justify that Lego holds its resale value or that keeping them to pass down to grandkids is always worthwhile. I dont mind spending a bit on the classics.
  20. $500 for a teen seems ok to me 🤔. I spend more then that on each of my kids but it doesnt equal masses of gifts under the tree. When Lego sets cost over $100 each and video games are upwards of $70 it goes fast. My DD wanted tickets to see Matilda the musical...for B reserve tickets it was still $130 and shes 10 so needs someone to go with ...so $260. And just because they get them my kids certainly don't expect these types of pricey gifts. When my DD first metioned the tickets she asked me. " So how much do you think Matilda tickets would cost? and I replied "Oh over a hundred dollars, I'm guessing". Her little face fell and she said "Oh well I guess I won't be going to see that then" and she forgot about it and hasn't asked again. I splurged because its been her absolute favourite book forever and I will admit...I do it for the thrill it gives me to see their faces when they get something they didnt expect they would ever get.😉 I save and find sales all year to manage the costs. Never use credit cards. When I was a kid I got one or two small gifts.. hardly ever what I asked for. When I was a teen I remember one year all I got was a cheap, ugly t-shirt because my mum "didnt know what to buy teens". I remember feeling horrible every christmas...not really because of lack of gifts but I felt like no one cared about me enough to even try and get something I would like.
  21. Pokemon figures are cheap? My kids want them but I'm not getting them...they are $20 each in Aus.
  22. I'm over my curriculum addiction...after 5 years of homeschooling we have found what works and will stick with it. I have my major loves and thats enough. Honestly, every curriculum teaches basically the same stuff just in a different manner and the trick is finding the one that fits you as a teacher and your child. Books on the other hand 😠We have 4 library cards between us with a 100 book limit on each and we usually sit pretty close to limit on how many books we have out. Our State has an awesome system called the "one card" system where you can use your card to borrow books from any library in the State...thats over 300 libraries I have access too ( school libraries are also included). The interloan system is free and the online catalogue contains books from all the libraries in one search. So basically I never have to buy books again as at least one library in 300 is sure to have it. The library staff know me well 😂
  23. I briefly pre read this book and then bought the audiobook 😂 This was one I did not want to read aloud. I thought it was boring but my kids liked it a lot and still talk about parts of it.
