I am from Littleton. I was a freshman at Columbine's rival high school when it happened. I remember the media frenzy. I remember every single instance of that day, the fear, the shock, the panic, the rumors ("they'll come here next!") Columbine came to my high school to finish out their year. About a month. I think the media frenzy died out sometime in there. I honestly don't remember much about the media after the first day Columbine came to us. They were kept off school grounds but were waiting as we walked home. And I totally feel your pain. It was like being in a dream: "This can't be happening here. Littleton is too nice of a place. Everyone is so nice to each other. Everyone gets along so well." And yet I still want people to remember. That fake Morgan Freeman quote about how no one remembers the victims' names? BS. Absolute BS. I don't remember *all* the names, but I do remember several. And the ones I don't remember their names, they are still remembered and still missed. Our community came together immediately after. The love and support we felt from everyone across the nation was humbling. To realize that people out there cared that we were so shocked, to realize that our friends had been through so much. It started ripping apart once the blame game started. Blaming the teachers, the parents, the guns, the police, suing the school. That sense of super community didn't last long, at least not for me.

DH is singing songs to the kids as he tucks them in. It's ridiculously late. We had Pigby's dance recital (so cute!!) and got home super late and ate dinner super late, so they ought to be conked out shortly.

Are you going to talk to your kids about the shooting today?
meggie replied to happyhomemaker25's topic in The Chat Board
I'm not allowed to watch the news either. Ever since having children, I really cannot tolerate hearing about children being abused. And not in a, "If I ignore this, maybe it will make it go away," type of thing. But a hysterical crying for hours at the pain that child had to endure. -

Not at all. I've already been concerned w/ my oldest's anxiety. I worry that he would not handle it well at all. We don't have TV and he hasn't seen anything about it. And I have a lot of anxiety and I'm staying away from it. It's bringing back too many memories of Columbine. I just can't go there since having children. I just can't imagine it being them. -

He comes in the spring to turn the water on for the swamp cooler. He comes in the fall to turn it off. He comes in between to fix a leaky faucet whenever it's leaky. He comes in the late spring/early summer to see if we plan on renewing our contract and has us sign a new one. That's about it.

How do convince someone that not EVERY meal needs to include meat?

Baby usually counts as a person in utero. At least here it does. Are you allowed to count baby now? -
Lucky!!! I love giving talks and I would desperately wish I was in YW.

I've searched all over the handbook. Blessing or passing the Sacrament don't seem to require white shirts, although it's recommended. http://www.lds.org/handbook/handbook-2-administering-the-church/priesthood-ordinances-and-blessings?lang=eng#204 "Those who bless and pass the sacrament should dress modestly and be well groomed and clean. Clothing or jewelry should not call attention to itself or distract members during the sacrament. Ties and white shirts are recommended because they add to the dignity of the ordinance. However, they should not be required as a mandatory prerequisite for a priesthood holder to participate. Nor should it be required that all be alike in dress and appearance. Bishops should use discretion when giving such guidance to young men, taking into account their financial circumstances and maturity in the Church." Baptisms require white clothing

It's generally best to focus on the three Rs first and then just do fun stuff. For reading we used Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. We had to keep checking it out of the library and when I could finally buy my own copy, I sliced the end off that sucker and had it spiral bound. When we needed to make it more "fun," I wrote the sentences and words on the white board. For handwriting, we used Handwriting Without Tears. For math, we used Math U See Primer. Then we would play games. Now that Pinterest is alive and well, you can get loads of fun ideas there. Crafts, games, science demonstrations. Lots of fun things.

Ugh! I don't know about replying or not, but what a vile person s/he must be. That's thoroughly disgusting

Ok, I can't find anything talking specifically about caffeine. It's always been up to the person (I guess, technically it all is). Most LDS I know wouldn't have a problem w/ hot chocolate or cider. Most wouldn't drink Kahlua. Caffeine specifically isn't mentioned in the Word of Wisdom, but some people have strong opinions on either side of the argument.

It's always possible, though I don't know any. There are some people who won't use real vanilla extract because it contains alcohol. I'll see if I can find any recent comments about it. We tend to go with the latest statement by our prophet.

If you have a typical 6yo first grader
meggie replied to plain jane's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don't know what typical is, but Pigby has been reading a ton of the Beverly Cleary books lately: Beezus and Ramona, Henry Huggins, Ribsy, etc. He's also read the LOF Apples and Butterflies and got out LOF Fractions. I don't know how much of that he understands, but he has been working through it (the story, not the math). He's always reading comic books, Calving and Hobbes, Garfield, and Peanuts. -
I finally have a few real opinions about the Duggars
meggie replied to LibraryLover's topic in The Chat Board
:iagree: And if they didn't do all that traveling, they'd lose their TLC show. Do you think TLC pays them to do the same thing over and over and over again or is there a reason they're always off on some new adventure? (Hint: it's because the viewers want new events to watch)- 236 replies

Not really. I serve the three meals. In between that, they get snacks if they ask for them. They're all mostly too little to do that themselves, but the six year old can get some things on his own. We have to be GFDF so our snacks consist of carrots, celery, almonds, craisins, and fruit. Digby has been caught several times with the peanut butter jar, but while that's annoying and gross, it's not the worst thing in the world to me. What I do make them do is drink a cup of water. They're usually somewhat dehydrated and I have heard that sometimes when you think you're hungry it's really because you're thirsty. They do need more water than they drink of their own free will.

Natural childbirth mamas... is Bradley still "in"?
meggie replied to Janie Grace's topic in The Chat Board
They were very empowering for me. Nothing like the rush after having them. My heavens, I felt ready to take on the world. After my first home birth, I'm pretty sure I went on for two months, at least, about how awesome I was. (and this is not to say that women who have medicated or CS births aren't awesome. I was just riding the high) -

I don't know about "in" but I loved my Hypnobabies births. Comfortable right up until pushing. I liked that they stressed the no pain during labor instead of managing pain during labor. That's what won me over in the first place. -
I Could Never Teach History in a Classroom

I was rather ridiculous before children, but I could hide it. After Pigby was born, it was just ridiculous! -

So I'm the type that would regularly cry over Hallmark commercials. Recently I've bawled my eyes out over the endings of Brave and Rio. Can't get through read alouds or even discussions of how great my son is and how proud I am over him without choking up. It's pathetic. -
It counts if you ever watch a lecture or read an assignment or take a quiz. Even if you don't complete a whole course or get the certificate, learning even one new thing is an important baby step.
