  1. That is the shape of trees we had during my childhood. No candles though as we would probably have managed to burn the house down somehow. Many of our decorations were Scandinavian & German, living in an area where those decorations were readily available and my mom liked the look. We were expected to like the Higbee's part of the Christmas Story. Other than that, I don't remember much.
  2. Only 25 physical orders, but 65 digital orders -- although most of the digital orders were free.
  3. Namaste Gluten Free Organic Perfect Flour Blend, 5 lb bag from Costco, is my best baking friend. Cookies, quick bread, brownies... I sub it into lots of recipes, 1:1 for wheat flour. However, gf batter/dough doesn't always behave like wheat flour. Some things don't work too well, like trying to roll up cinnamon rolls. Cutout cookies are best, IME, when the dough is well-chilled and when I use small sized cookie cutters. I haven't tried yeast bread, other than flatbread (which worked great). My kids love Trader Joe's GF pumpkin pancakes. It's a boxed mix, available this time of year.
  4. What helped my kid: (during the week before school started) Downloaded a map of the school, numbered the classes on the map, and then walked the route from 1st period to 2nd period, etc. Practiced opening their locker - combination lock. Drove the bus route - public transit - to know where the stops are, where to change buses. Made a plan for when to go to locker if necessary to swap textbooks (during mid-morning break & lunch break) although I think my kid has only one textbook, so just keeps it in their backpack. So far, almost halfway into the first quarter, kid has had no more than a half hour homework per night. That's total homework, not per class. No essays, very little in-class writing. Some classes are still reviewing and haven't started teaching new material yet. All the assignment & test info is online so I can see kid's scores for everything.
  5. IME Barbie is an individual kid thing. I liked Barbie (well, Skipper to be accurate), starting from around age 6, and played with Barbie type dolls through about 6th grade. My kids had Barbies but rarely played with them. They had a brief phase around kindergarten age of playing with the Kelly size dolls. They always preferred playing with stuffed animals and Playmobil. As a child, I didn't play with stuffed animals; my perception of stuffed animals was that they were decorations, not lil' critters with personalities.
  6. Right now Amazon shows "Kindle Price $0.00" I just purchased it and was not charged. Additionally, Amazon indicates the book may be borrowed for free by Kindle Unlimited subscribers.
  7. How do you know they are not on the spectrum? Not all parents & kids share diagnosis info. And not all kids who would be given a spectrum diagnosis if they were evaluated have been evaluated.
  8. I don't think so. The Prime Reading description says "over a thousand books, comics, magazines..." but Kindle Unlimited is billed as having a million titles available.
  9. Thanks, Jann, that is very helpful.
  10. From reading the replies, I have a couple of questions. What are some examples of pcos-related mood issues in teens? What hormone tests are done to help diagnose pcos?
  11. No. As of the last time I called (couple years ago), the CSR said GEICO doesn't offer earthquake coverage on homeowner policies.
  12. I'm older than you are. Sometimes I feel like I'm not a grown-up yet. So maybe when I am about 70 I might consider myself middle-aged.
  13. ITA, manual is harder to find now. We looked at manual vs automatic when looking for a car few years back. The manual was slightly less expensive but (surprisingly to me) it was rated lower for fuel economy. Mazda 3, good choice!
  14. I will add one thing about self-pay. If the provider is made aware that you have insurance, and they are contracted with your insurance plan, I believe they are not permitted to accept you as a cash patient.
  15. I don't know anything about the iPhone 5. Dh has Moto G4. He can play Pokemon Go in places where I can't get cell reception on my G3, because our wireless carrier doesn't support "Band 12" on the G3. He says the Band 12 issue could vary by carrier, and reception in your area might not be a problem anyway. There are some parks here with wooded ravines and that's where I'm running into the reception problem.

  17. I remember those piercing earrings! The salons here used them. I have no idea why the posts were so thick. I got my first three piercings with those thick posts. The next two were regular thickness posts. Then I got a cartilage piercing with a gun (VERY bad idea) - I don't know if it was a thick post or not, can't remember, but it NEVER healed and I had to let it close up about a year later. It left a weird mark <_< One more piercing after that and it never healed either and is now closed up. Due to the problems I had the last two times, if I were to get another, I'd go to a tattoo/piercing place. I think a hollow needle makes a cleaner less traumatic piercing, plus I like the style of starter earrings they use (easier to keep clean).
  18. It's everywhere here. And it drives me nuts. Person X says to me, "Person Y will reach out to you..." So... will Person Y call me? Email me? Send me a letter in the mail? Or tap me on the forehead a la ET?
  19. In my experience, the difficulty lies in whether you need to prep the trim or use a special kind of paint. The builder installed prefinished white trim in our house. A few years ago I painted over it with semigloss latex. The latex didn't adhere, and is gummily coming off in multiple places. And there are a few spots where the kids figured this out, and engraved "artwork" into the gummy latex. Sigh. To top it all off, most (maybe all) of the trim is not wood, but pressboard stuff. Like the bathroom baseboards, and around the window above the kitchen sink. What were they thinking?! Anywhere that gets splashes of water is swollen and the finish has come off. I really need to motivate myself to pull it off and replace it with ACTUAL WOOD trim.
  20. I wouldn't do it. Practice doing my nails, cutting my hair... okay. But practice moving around my teeth that I will need to rely on for the rest of my life? No.
  21. Super fun at the superfund site! There was an old gas station in my neighborhood. It got torn down, and the underground tanks were removed. My friends and I used to climb down into the pits and play. Too late now to worry about the contaminated soil. :ack2:
