  1. Off topic but can I just say it's nice to see a new resident saying good things (you did in another thread also). Too often imo, people move to Florida then immediately start complaining about everything from the weather to the food to how things are done here. I usually wonder why those people left a place that was obviously so much better.
  2. Yes, this. Often if you check the Nook price you'll see that it's the same. Book sellers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble have less control over ebook prices than they do over print copies. Here are a few examples. I chose popular authors who are with a big publishing house. James Patterson Kindle Nook Kate Morton Kindle Nook Jodi Picoult Kindle Nook Compare nearly any Kindle and Nook books and you'll find the same thing. Publishers set these prices. Amazon only has control over the books they publish and at this time, AFAIK, no major popular authors have signed on with Amazon.
  3. I've done that more than once. Often when I get to the library I have grand visions of reading everything I pull off the shelf that looks interesting. Then they sit in my library bag until they're due back - or more often - until they're overdue and the library is sending me emails.
  4. Sunny. High 69, low 58. The next 10 days has highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. and lows in the 60s. In other words, December in Florida.
  5. Do they still have the orange fruit processing thing? Ds used to love that and judging by the fact that it was always crowded, he wasn't the only one. That and the sailboat area were his favorites. And the tree. Okay, the entire kids town. :) Manatees should not be missed, but the weather is going to determine if/how many you'll see. Blue Springs is your best bet but you see more if the weather (and therefore the water) is a bit on the cool side (cold by Florida standards, cool for everyone else). Maybe I'm jaded because KSC is in my backyard, but it just doesn't seem worth the cost to me. It's not that it isn't fun/interesting/enjoyable, but the cost vs. what you get is what always makes me hesitate to recommend it. If you're here when there's going to be a launch, it's worth coming over to the coast to watch one. Just be aware that all kinds of things can cause one to be scrubbed and rescheduled. spaceflightnow.com is a good site for upcoming launches, even though it's an unofficial site. The Nick Hotel sadly is no longer. It's now a Holiday Inn Suites water park but I haven't heard anything about it. http://www.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs/archives/2016/02/01/say-goodbye-to-the-slime-nickelodeon-hotel-will-soon-close-its-doors http://www.hisuitesorlando.com/
  6. Yeah, we had that issue too. I think I ended up having to go the department store route (JC Penney, Macy's, etc.) for a size or two until he was fully into adult sizes. I also had a problem with his wide feet. I could find wide toddler sizes, usually Stride Rite, but once he got into regular kid sizes wide width was hard to find. I sometimes had to buy him a size too big just so they'd be wide enough. Again, that was solved when he moved to adult sizes, but it was frustrating.
  7. What bad things have you heard that would prevent you from vacationing here? As other said, you don't need to worry about gators at the beach. Legoland is a good choice. Kennedy Space Center is expensive for what you get, so unless you or someone in the family is a big fan of the space program I'd skip it. The Orlando Science Center is great, and there's an art museum nearby too. I haven't been to Disney Springs since it was Downtown Disney but I can't imagine it's all that different. It's a fun place to hang out. If you have Lego fans you MUST go to The Lego Store there. I agree with Katie on The Brevard Zoo. They also have a zipline there - Treetop Trek
  8. I didn't click on the link, but I love that skit. Well, I only have one and it's a good thing he wasn't a girl, because we couldn't agree on a name. Dh wanted Kathleen after me, I wanted Mary after my maternal grandmother. Kathleen Mary doesn't roll off the tongue easily and Mary Kathleen sounds like a nun's name. We also didn't have any other boy names picked out. Maybe it's a good thing we just had one. :) As for the Kennedys, I always wanted to name a daughter Kara, like Kara Kennedy. I just liked the sound of Kara. We couldn't use it if we had a girl though because dh has a niece with that name, although it's spelled Cara. Dh's nephew married a woman from Japan. She goes by Mari, with the A sounding like aahh (sigh). She told us her actual Japanese name once but it's difficult to remember. And she said that's why she gave herself a sort of American name that's as close to her Japanese name as she could get. My brother is Steven. His daughter married a Stephen. Both always get their names misspelled. I'm relaxed about mine. My mother wasn't though. She would get annoyed if anyone called me Kate or Katie, insisting that nickname is reserved for Catherine and her daughter (me) is Kathleen. I've been called Kate/Katie as an adult and it doesn't bother me. When I was a preteen and teen I was jealous of people with interesting names and/or spellings. For a while I spelled my name Kathie, then Kathi. Eventually I went back to Kathy. Dh says he can tell what time in my life a person knows me from by how they spell my name. :) Mine was May which I also had to constantly spell, not to mention convince people it wasn't my middle name. But what's your last name? That is my last name. How do you spell it? Like the month between April and June. I can't tell you how often I had the above conversation. At least when my married name is misspelled it makes sense. Some people add a silent B, which is a variation of the spelling and some leave out the E that comes near the end, also a variation.
  9. Thank you for letting us know, Mr. Jane. :)
  10. If she's just going to use it to read and is technology challenged, I'd recommend a Kindle ereader over the Fire. They're not as cheap but will probably be just what she needs. Dh and his sibs got his mother a Kindle Paperwhite one year for Mother's Day. She was adamant about not wanting technology but once we showed her how to increase the font, she was sold. You can load it for her with books, turn off the wifi, and she'll be good to go until she needs more books. ETA: There are several different kinds of ereaders. All of ours are refurbished, which cuts the price a little but gives you the same warranty. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZV9PXP2/ref=fs_ods_fs_eink_eb
  11. Always garlic. Often onions or bell peppers of any color. I don't usually measure spices but I can tell by looking at a recipe if I need to increase or decrease the amount to fit my family's tastes (usually it's increase). If something is meant to be served over rice, I often double the rice. If it doesn't get eaten at that meal, it will be gone in a day or two by using it in other dishes. Sauces often get doubled because I can't convince dh and ds not to drown their food in a sauce. Better to have more than not enough. I can't think of anything I halve. I often leave out allspice and cloves because I don't like either, and most recipes I make that use them are fine without either.
  12. That was definitely the case for me. I thought it was going to be my new normal but once I crossed over into being fully post-menopausal it stopped. I rarely wake in the middle of the night anymore and I rarely have any more attacks, either at night or during the day. Just thought some of you who might be in the middle of this life event would want to know there IS light at the end of the tunnel. As for Goodreads, here's my year in review. I think I'm already friends with those of you on Goodreads who sent me friend requests, but if anyone else wants to add me, feel free.
  13. Yes, and my friend whose daughter has a peanut allergy is the one who first told me about Penzeys. I believe they're recommended among her PA groups too. I don't know if she buys blends.
  14. I'm happy with the emails and the stance Bill Penzey has taken. I posted my thank-you last month on their facebook page when they started getting a backlash, and I'll continue to buy my spices from them (I don't buy blends but I buy their individual spices).
  15. :grouphug: I'm so sorry. :grouphug:
  16. LOL. I always understood the rule to be Catherine and Kathleen. That's how you knew a Cathy was Catherine and a Kathy was Kathleen. But then, there's Katharine Hepburn and if IIRC her mother's name was the same. Different spellings might be more common but they're nothing new.
  17. Unfortunately it seems we've already done that.
  18. Raised Catholic in the 1960s I always heard it pronounced with the accent on the first syllable. Then again, I only knew it as a place name (Fatima, Portugal) not a person's name. In Islamic circles I think is where it's a common given name. I didn't learn that until I was an adult.
  19. And don't forget Rudolph isn't the only one who is bullied. The poor elf who wants to be a dentist (The Horror!) is also bullied, until he too becomes useful by being able to pull the monster's tooth (who isn't really a monster, he's just in pain from his toothache). Then there's the whole Island of Misfit Toys. Talk about ableism. Ugh. Yeah, I grew up with that show and loved it. Then I watched it as an adult with ds, being excited to share with him one of my favorite holiday movies. I was appalled.
  20. I finished A Man Called Ove. It was entirely predictable but thoroughly enjoyable. My review. And with that, I met my Goodreads goal of 75 books for the year. I'm pretty sure I'll finish about 5 more before the year ends. Current audio book - Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, by Trevor Noah (of The Daily Show).
  21. I'm just glad this thing started as ds was getting wise to the whole Santa thing. I think it started the Christmas before he realized who Santa is. I never had to even consider adding this to our traditions. As far as I know dss and ddil aren't doing it with the grandkids either. Whew!
  22. Ugh. I agree. Ours are due in November. Not a great time but better than just before (or just after ) Christmas.
  23. The Amazon Echo Dot has dropped to $39.99. It appears to be out of stock but is supposed to be available again in time for Christmas. I ordered one this morning for my niece and her husband. BTW, if you shop Amazon regularly do you know about/use Tracktor? It's an Amazon price tracker. You can put in the item and the price and you'll be notified when the price drops below your preferred price. I woke up to such an email this morning, which is how I knew about the Echo price drop. You can also add a Chrome extension for any online store. Just be aware that using this extension means it has to know your browsing history.
  24. I've never known a female Shawn, but went to school with a girl named Shawna. I've known males with the different spellings - Sean (my preference) Shaun, and Shawn.
